SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Kids and teens struggling with their mental health during the Coronavirus Pandemic and weeks of protests over racial injustice have a new way to cope.BlueShield CA has expanded its Blue Sky program, increasing funding to local mental health organizations and giving kids a platform to share tips on dealing with anxiety and depression."There's a greater need now than ever," says Blue Sky Program Manager Amanda Lasik. "There's a greater need to speak to youth voices and listen and learn from what's going on."According to the CDC, 7.1% of kids age 3-17 have been diagnosed with anxiety, and 3.2% of kids in the same age group have been diagnosed with depression. Experts believe those numbers will rise because of the pandemic and protests.As part of the expansion, Blue Sky partnered with DoSomething.org to launch the "New State of Mind" campaign. Kids send tips for coping to the website, which get published through emails, texts, and social media."The response has been overwhelming," says Lasik. "When we were originally planning this campaign, we thought it'd be great if we got about 17,000 tips. We've already received over 60,000."In addition to the "New State of Mind" effort, Blue Sky has provided 0,000 to 18 youth organizations in San Diego and Alameda county. The money has helped them adapt their services to the challenges of the past few months."It's been a quick transition, but these groups are now offering counseling online, doing arts programming online, and engaging young people online in different ways," says Lasik."We've also heard from the nonprofit community that they just need a little bit of operating support."The money is in addition to the million that BlueShield pledged as part of the Blue Sky initiative last December.RELATED: South Bay schools partner with insurance company to address student mental health challengesFor high school student Joel Castro, connecting with these programs has been empowering."It gives me hope," says Castro. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In the midst of a housing supply crunch, San Diego is seeing apartments taken off market and reserved for short-term vacationers. The units would add to the estimated 16,000 vacation rentals now available in the City of San Diego, according to a recent audit.Now, a company called Sonder has signed master leases at apartment complexes and towers in locations including downtown, North Park, Little Italy, and Point Loma. Instead of renting them full time, the company leases them to visitors, charging more than 0 per unit on an average night. "Every San Diego resident needs to be afraid of that," said Brian Curry, whose group Save San Diego Neighborhoods is tracking Sonder. "It's a huge crisis, drives up rents, drives up housing prices."Curry's group estimates Sonder has leased more than 70 units and counting, including entire buildings in some locations. A spokesman for Sonder declined comment Thursday. In the past, the company has stated it pays all local taxes and that it has the right to sublease to short-term renters. Additionally, it has noted that developers have used increased revenue from Sonder to build even more market rate units. Still, City Councilwoman Barbara Bry said she was appalled at the practice and says the city should be ensuring developers deliver on the units the city approves. "Private developers tell us, 'let us build more units, let the market take care of our housing problem,' and then they artificially remove units and turn them into short-term vacation rentals," she said. "That's not fair."Meanwhile, the city code enforcement division is continuing to investigate The Louisiana complex on University Avenue. The city approved the complex as a 13-unit mixed-use apartment complex, but Sonder has the master lease for each of the market-rate units. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- If you are experiencing mental fatigue like never before, you are not alone. Many people who are used to forging ahead in times of crisis, like this coronavirus pandemic, say the feeling is unfamiliar. Emily Chandler of Vista says she never could have imagined her kids would still be distance learning in the fall. "This has been going on so long, and I'm just exhausted," Chandler says. Her three sons are in three different schools and her oldest, Timmy, has autism. Helping them all with school means studying up on things herself. Marriage and family therapist Serene Carruthers, of Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital, says what Chandler is feeling is tied to the seemingly endless nature of the pandemic."It really is because our body is built to respond to stressful events typically that last for a duration of a short period of time," says Carruthers. "Some experts call it surge capacity. Like a battery our adaptive system can provide us with the mental, physical and emotional power to survive a short-term emergency. Then it needs to be recharged which is easier said than done during a pandemic because for many people, their self-care rituals have been upended or canceled.""It is a very lonely time and I'm not getting that energy, that recharge," says Chandler. Carruthers says not to underestimate the power of play, which is free and can be done anywhere. She also recommends shifting expectations, maintaining connections with loved ones, keeping a gratitude journal about the good in your life, and exercising even if it's just walking in your home. Chandler says the reopening of her gym helped her feel like herself again, and she and Carruthers both say it's all right to ask for help, which Chandler says she's glad she did."I got on an anti-anxiety medication and I'm not embarrassed about that. It's really, really helped me," Chandler says.What has also helped is her boys have been troopers, making it clear that sometimes the biggest challenge can also bring the greatest joy. 2031

Karina Sanchez searches for the right words. "We can't even believe how great business has been, we're so so thankful for it."Sanchez and her husband are owners of Waterhorse Charters in Mission Bay. Opening just last year, they offer scuba diving tours, party cruises, fishing and whale watching excursions.When the pandemic hit, they were forced to temporarily shutdown by state mandate. But once given the green light to reopen, Sanchez says business has been booming, with people want to get out and do it safely."I feel like people get a little more comfortable going out in the water," says Sanchez, "Something that's outdoors; than having, for instance, a house party or just going to bars or something like that."Sanchez connects with many of her customers through the site GetMyBoat.Com, which is kind of like Airbnb for boats."There's some data that suggests the average boat is only used 8 to 10% of the year," says Val Streif, who represents GetMyBoat.com from their headquarters in Minneapolis. "And the other time it's just sitting in a dock or marina."Streif says GetMyBoat has listings from private boat owners and charter services in 184 countries around the world, offering everything from kayaks and jet skis to pontoon boats and yachts."This is a way for people to earn some supplemental income," says Strief, "When they're not using the boat for themselves for personal purposes."There are increased regulations during the pandemic -- stepped up cleaning, fewer passengers for social distancing and other steps depending on the boat or excursion offered."We require everybody to wear a mask while they're on board," says Sanchez, "When they rent a regulator -- which is the piece you put in your mouth when you're diving -- every time people rent one from us we make them buy the mouthpiece."Sanchez says the changes aren't hurting business, as they've been sold out.
