(KGTV) - San Diego-based Rep. Scott Peters described his trip to a migrant detention center near McAllen, Texas, as "stunningly depressing.""The single men were being held in a series of rooms, each built for say 8-10 people and I think they had 40 people in them ... The faces of these men just looking out with desperate looks through these windows, some of them shirtless, it's obviously very hot in those places," the Democratic congressman said of his July 13 visit.Peters described the stench from the facility due to the inability for the men to shower. He said another holding facility the size of a convention center, had women and children in rooms divided by chain-link fence. "For the small children there's a small area where they can have toys. There's a few tragic sights you see of four or five-year-olds who are unaccompanied," he said.He said San Diego isn't dealing with nearly as many migrants compared to Texas, "the night before we arrived they picked up 2,000 people." He said he's proud of how San Diegans have stepped up, creating a migrant shelter downtown to fill in the gaps created with new laws meant to speed up the process."They do the intake, provide medical assessments, and then get these people on their way so that they can be out on their way with their family around the country and ready for their asylum hearing," he said.Ultimately he said there needs to be change at the southern border and in the countries causing their citizens to flee. 1490

(KGTV) SAN DIEGO - A local Vietnam veteran was recently honored decades after his service.  The ceremony was a bittersweet one. Retired Navy Captain, John Cammall, is in hospice care. His son, David, said he will likely never leave his home. "He's been a great father," David said as tears fell and he shifted in his chair at the foot of his dad's bed. "It's hard to see him this way."Hospice care cannot give you a fairytale ending but Elizabeth Hospice and some Camp Pendleton Marines did brighten one vet's morning. You can learn more about the program here. 589

(KGTV) - The Navy is taking action to assess living conditions in military housing amid complaints of rodents, mold, and water damage. Families have shared stories about housing problems with 10News over several weeks. The Navy sent a survey Monday to received feedback on the situation. Erika Bradley, a Navy wife and mother, said she arrived at MCAS Miramar last June to find mice and mold in her new home. “When my husband calls and he's in a war zone, do you think I am going to complain about mold? ‘Hey babe, we have rats where our children eat,” Bradley said. “I don't want him to worry about that because if his mind isn't focused where it needs to be, that's peoples lives.” Lawmakers are trying to push a bill through Congress that would give military families power to withhold rent from landlords. More than 700,000 people live in privatized housing across military bases. Bradley is hoping the military will put more pressure on private companies, holding them accountable. The Navy is also conducting town hall meetings and walk-throughs. 10News reached out to MCAS Miramar property management, but they did not respond. 1143

(KGTV) - Naval Criminal Investigative Services announced Friday the arrests of two additional Marines and a sailor, bringing the total of troops suspected of human smuggling and drug-related offenses to 19. An additional eight troops were questioned about drug offenses unrelated to the arrests, said Maj. Kendra Motz, 1st Marine Division Communication Strategy Operations Director. (KGTV) - San Diego’s LGBTQ community and visitors from around the world will gather in July to mark Pride with a festival, parade, and other special events. Thousands of visitors are expected in the Hillcrest and Balboa Park neighborhoods for a weekend of celebration and political purpose. The theme for 2019 is Stonewall 50: A Legacy of Liberation, marking the 1969 Stonewall Riots when members of the LGBTQ community fought back against “legal oppression.” “This Pride we will highlight the Stonewall generation, their activism, and all that our community has gained through their efforts, as we challenge ourselves to reflect on our own role in that legacy, and how, if we approach our own individual legacies with intention, we can build on their successes to leave a better world for those who come next,” said San Diego Pride Executive Director Fernando Z. López. Spirit of Stonewall Rally The annual rally will be held Friday, July 12, from 6-7 p.m. at the Hillcrest Pride Flag at University Avenue and Normal Street.
