EL CAJON (CNS) - A man was struck and killed by an SUV as he crossed a street in El Cajon, police said today.The man, believed to be 50 to 60 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene, Lt. Stephen Kirk of the El Cajon Police Department said.The motorist is cooperating with police and investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor, Kirk said. Police said the man was crossing Jamacha Road at the intersection with Granite Hills Drive at 10:15 p.m. Saturday and was struck by a 38-year-old El Cajon woman driving a 2019 Bentley SUV north on Granite.At the time of the collision, the man was walking outside the crosswalk, police said.The crash remains under investigation and Jamacha Road is expected to be closed in both directions between Granite Hills Drive and Washington Avenue until at least 4 a.m.The El Cajon Police Department is asking anyone with information to call 619- 579-3311. 914

Doctors are sounding the alarm on the rise in unvaccinated kids as we head into the winter months.Childhood vaccination rates have been fluctuating along with COVID cases.An immunology expert tells us he thinks parents are avoiding doctors' offices because of the pandemic.“They're just scared of gathering in groups and it makes sense, but pediatricians are doing their darndest to try and make sure that people are in as safe as a position as possible because it's important to get vaccinated. I mean it's not just COVID-19 that can kill you,” said Dr. Paul Offit, Professor of Pediatrics at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.Right now, Offit says his two biggest concerns are measles and whooping cough. Both are winter diseases.Although the measles had previously been eliminated in the United States, cases have been rising in recent years because of a lack of vaccinations.Offit says at least before we had a measles vaccine, it was actually much more likely to be deadly than COVID-19.There are tens of thousands of cases of whooping cough in the U.S. every year and children are most likely to die from it.There are also other bacteria out there that are less common but can cause things like meningitis or pneumonia.“We put these diseases aside because we're assuming they're gone. They're not gone, and let your immunizations drop far enough and we'll see them again,” said Offit.Offit says wearing masks and social distancing have helped keep the spread of some of these diseases, other than COVID-19, under control too.But he's concerned that once people are able to get a COVID-19 vaccine, they will immediately stop practicing those measures. 1670

EL CAJON (CNS) - A man who rear-ended a pregnant woman's car in Ramona two years ago while driving drunk, killing the woman and her unborn child, was sentenced Monday to 34 years to life in state prison. Andrew Milonis, 46, was convicted last month of murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and hit-and-run for the Mother's Day 2017 crash that killed 29-year-old Jessica Foderingham and her unborn daughter, who she and her husband had planned to name Ayanna. Deputy District Attorney Laura Evans read a letter from the victim's husband, who was driving ahead of his wife when he saw the crash in his rear-view mirror, pulled over and tried to pull her out of the wreckage. Her two young sons from a previous relationship were in the car with their stepfather, and saw the aftermath. ``I still hear them screaming in my dreams, saying, `Daddy, save Mommy,' and `Mommy, get up,''' he wrote. Evans said a bartender recommended that Milonis arrange a Lyft ride to get home, but he ignored the advice. Milonis struck a tree and multiple telephone poles before crashing into Foderingham's car, Evans said. After the crash, Milonis continued driving to a nearby hotel, where employees called a Lyft driver for him. When the Lyft driver arrived and asked Milonis where he wanted to go, the defendant told the driver something to the effect of, ``Anywhere I can get a drink,'' according to Evans.
