SAN DIEGO - San Diego Democrats are now celebrating their party officially taking back the House of Representatives. Now, they want action on a bill they say will take corruption out of U.S. politics."Having the Democrats take back the house is the best birthday present anybody could have," said Ruth Kirk, who lives in Hillcrest. On Thursday, Kirk celebrated with about three dozen of her like minded friends - in front of Democratic Congresswoman Susan Davis's office in North Park. The demonstrators, part of a group called Indivisible, worked to flip house seats from red to blue in the 2018 election. With that goal accomplished, Indivisible is turning its attention to reforming how politics operate in this country. Indivisible held rallies outside Davis's office as well as Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter's Temecula headquarters. They are pushing for H.R. 1 - a bill that would reform campaign finance laws, ethics, and voting rights."We want to get the money and the gerrymandering out of politics and the ethics back into government," Kirk said. Davis says the bill is still being drafted and hopes to have it passed by Jan. 21. That's the eighth anniversary of the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision, which freed corporations and unions to spend all they want on political ads. It appears, however, to have a minuscule chance in the Republican-controlled senate. Majority leader Mitch McConnell last month called it a blatantly unconstitutional effort to micromanage our elections. Political analyst Ruben Barrales, who worked in the George W. Bush administration, says there are some aspects of the bill that could pass - such as more daylight for campaign contributions. He says Republicans may find some of the bill's provisions too restrictive or granting too much power to one agency.Kirk says she's already thinking about 2020 - and campaigning to put more Democrats in the Senate - and one in the White House. 1947

SAN DIEGO — Advocates with the group Yes California aimed at splitting California have released a new plan that would establish the “autonomous Native American nation.”"The plan is to retrocede virtually all federally-owned properties in California back to its original occupants, the California Native Americans," part of a release reads. Earlier this year, advocates with the campaign began collecting signatures for the initiative. The proposed initiative is the third Calexit proposal since the election of President Donald Trump. Previous efforts were all either withdrawn of failed to gather enough signatures. The latest proposal asks voters about secession in 2020. If the longshot initiative passed, a second election would be held a year later that asks voters to affirm the action. 813

SAN BERNARDINO (KGTV) -- Park View's Green Monsters sprayed the toasty San Bernardino sky with a barrage of home runs on their way to a convincing victory Sunday night in the first round of the Little League West Regional baseball tournament at Houghton Stadium. The Southern California squad from Chula Vista powered their way to a win with a grand slam and a pair of back-to-back jacks from their two biggest bats in their rout over the Northern California champion Tri-City Little League team out of Rocklin, Calif., 16-8.The opening round match up saw the Green Monsters fall behind early in the bottom of the first on a long ball when Tri-City's Nathan Erickson cracked a low drive off Kainoa Baptista that hooked over the 225 marker just inside the left field foul pole. After hitting Aiden Weissenberg-Frost on a pitch then allowing him to advance to second on a passed ball, Baptista gave up a single to Adam Van Der Kamp that brought in Weissenberg-Frost giving Northern California a 2-0 lead.Weissenberg-Frost, whose recent no-hitter helped put TCLL into the West Region tournament, continued his dominance on the mound Sunday night.  The 5-foot-9, 170-pound right-hander relied on his searing 75 mph fastball to record his fourth and fifth strikeouts of the game in the second inning. According to announcers broadcasting the game on ESPN Plus, Weissenberg-Frost's fastball is equivalent to a mid-90s fastball in the Major Leagues. The Green Monsters struggled to locate Weissenberg-Frost's heat, but it was on his 40th pitch of the game in the second inning that saw PVLL get on the scoreboard.PVLL's Atticus Gates lined a 3-1 fastball over second base that got past center fielder Trajan Rogowski allowing Conner Alonzo to score from first base to narrow TCLL's lead, 2-1.Matthew Bjornstad took the mound for Baptista in the bottom of the second inning and turned in a commanding performance striking out all three TCLL batters he faced on 15 pitches. With Weissenberg-Frost still throwing 70 mph darts, Michael Rodriguez, a 5-foot-11, 160-pound right-hander, blasted a 1-2 fastball over left-center into a row of tents several feet behind the wall giving PVLL a 3-2 lead.TCLL's Tanner Dykstra came on to replace Weissenberg-Frost (59 pitches, 6Ks, 3 runs) only to face the Green Monster's cleanup hitter Jose Mendoza.Mendoza, a 6-foot, 193-pound center fielder, crushed Dykstra's first pitch into the souvenir shack beyond the right field wall.  Rodriguez and Mendoza's back-to-back big flies put PVLL up 4-2.Weissenberg-Frost's night on the mound may have been finished, but his bat wasn't done.  With two outs in the bottom of the third, the pitcher-slash-power hitter stopped Bjornstad's streak of five consecutive outs with a homer of his own.  Weissenberg-Frost struck a moon shot over the scoreboard in the left field gallery to cut PVLL's lead, 4-3.PVLL would go on to race around the bases in the top of the fourth led by a second round of back-to-back homers from Rodriguez and Mendoza, giving the SoCal Champs an 8-3 lead.Northern California got help in the bottom of the 4th inning after Rodriguez, who took over pitching duties, walked in a couple of runs to make the score 9-5. But that's as close as TCLL would come to catching the Green Monsters.  Rodriguez put the game out of reach with a towering grand slam over center field to put PVLL ahead for good.Park View will advance to play Nevada tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. at Houghton Stadium.  The winner of this tournament will represent the West in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA. Rodriguez wrapped up his night at the plate with three home runs (grand slam, 2HRs) and eight RBIs.  Mendoza finished with two homers and two RBIs. 3852

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A bicyclist riding with a group of cyclists was seriously injured Saturday when he was struck by a motorcycle in Pacific Beach, police said. The collision happened at 3:14 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Ingraham Street and Reed Avenue, according to Officer John Buttle of the San Diego Police Department.A 23-year-old man riding a 2017 Harley Davidson Sportster was southbound in the 4200 block of Ingraham as a group of cyclists were eastbound in the 1500 block of Reed Avenue, Buttle said. The cyclists entered the intersection and the motorcycle struck one of them, a 49-year-old man, the officer said. The motorcyclist suffered road rash to his right leg, Buttle said. The bicyclist suffered a broken left femur and broken ribs. Medics took the cyclist to a hospital.Officers from the SDPD traffic division were investigating the collision, Buttle said.Ingraham was closed in both directions at Thomas and Oliver avenues and was expected to last a couple of hours, the SDPD said. 1012

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The red-hot San Francisco Giants keep playing — and winning — extra-inning games.Pablo Sandoval homered with two outs in the 11th and the Giants beat the San Diego Padres 2-1 Friday night for their 18th victory in 22 games.Sandoval's drive on a 1-2 pitch from Logan Allen (2-3) just cleared the wall in left field. It was his 13th. He entered as a pinch-hitter in the ninth, when he hit a leadoff double, and stayed in at third base."It doesn't get any bigger than that, what he did," San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said. "It's another hard-fought game. These guys seem to like that, going overtime here."The Giants have won six extra-inning games in their last 10 contests and seven in their past 15 since the All-Star break."It tells me that we have a great bullpen," said starter Jeff Samardzija, who pitched six strong innings. "To win extra-inning games, you've got to be throwing up zeros with guys that obviously aren't starters. I know our starters have pitched well to make sure we've given these guys some time off, but they've gone out there and been so efficient and so solid with their work that they've made these extra-inning games not be too taxing on them and haven't taxed our bullpen too much because they've been so good."We'll keep trying to eat up innings as starters, but tell you what, winning close games is some of the best things you can do for a whole season when it comes to momentum and feeling good about yourselves and being confident in those situations going forward."The Giants have won four straight games against San Diego at Petco Park in July, part of a surprising surge that has helped them jump into the NL wild-card race. The Padres have lost eight straight home games. They were coming off a 3-6 trip.Mark Melancon (4-2) struck out two in a perfect 10th for the win. All-Star closer Will Smith pitched the 11th for his 25th save, getting Eric Hosmer to hit into a game-ending double play.Giants center fielder Kevin Pillar made a nice running catch of Wil Myers' deep fly ball for the second out of the ninth.San Diego's Austin Hedges tied the game at 1 with a home run off Jeff Samardzija into the balcony on the third level of the Western Metal Supply Co. Building in the left field corner with one out in the fifth, his eighth.Samardzija and Padres left-hander Joey Lucchesi each pitched six strong innings. Samardzija allowed one run and four hits while striking out six and walking three. Lucchesi yielded one run and two hits while striking out eight and walking four."Just not a good offensive performance by us," Padres manager Andy Green said. "We've just got to put runs on the board. It's really simple. Just not enough quality at-bats today against Samarjdzija. He's a veteran pitcher whose stuff was moving quite a bit today. We didn't make the necessary adjustments and get to him."Lucchesi retired his first six batters before walking Tyler Austin leading off the third. Austin stole second and scored on Donovan Solano's double to the center field wall.Lucchesi got into and out of trouble in the fifth, loading the bases with no outs before retiring the side by striking out Samardzija, getting an infield fly call on Donovan Solano's popup and then inducing Brandon Belt to ground out to shortstop. 3286
