SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two major freeway connectors in San Diego will be closed overnight for routine maintenance, Caltrans announced.The southbound Interstate 5 connector to eastbound state Route 52 near La Jolla and the southbound Interstate 15 connector to westbound Interstate 8 in the Mission Valley East area will both be closed at 3 a.m. Saturday, with the I-15 closure expected to reopen at 8:30 a.m. and the I-5 closure set to reopen at 9 a.m.Caltrans crews will be performing landscape maintenance at the I-5 junction with SR-52. Those needing to head east on from the interstate to the highway will be directed to drive past the closed junction, exit at Clairemont Drive, get on northbound I-5 and then take SR-52 east.The closure in Mission Valley will allow Caltrans crews to make electrical repairs. Signs on southbound I-15 during the repair work will direct drivers to exit the interstate at El Cajon Boulevard and reenter the northbound lanes of I-15 to connect with westbound I-8.Caltrans reminded drivers to be work-zone alert by avoiding distracted driving, paying attention to traffic and slowing down when approaching work zones. 1154

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Clairemont woman says she came home to a break-in and heartbreak.On Friday afternoon at the Balboa Arms condos, Terri Harrison's adult daughter discovered a ransacked home.The intruder likely ripped a window screen before reaching in and unlocking the window.Missing from a bedroom was her daughter's laptop. In the master bedroom, a lock box was emptied of personal documents and some six pieces of jewelry, including a set of pearls belonging to her mom.Both her mother and father passed away two year ago."You wear something that's hers, you feel like she's close to you again ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of San Diego City College students are hoping their fundraising efforts will help them get to a national STEM conference in Hawaii later this year. The students are a part of the club called SACNAS (Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science), a chapter of a larger, national organization. The club works with students K-12 to teach them about the career opportunities in STEM. The conference offers research opportunities, tips to improve networking skills and workshops about cutting-edge research. SACNAS takes place in October of 2019 in Honolulu, Hawaii. SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) - Trial started Monday for the Yuma, Arizona police officer accused of raping a woman during a visit to San Diego.Jared Elkins, 34, is charged with eight felony counts of rape for the alleged incident in September 2017.The 23-year-old woman’s mother called 911 to report a crime at a home on Marlborough Street in Kensington. Elkins, who is related to the alleged victim by marriage, was staying at her home.Elkins, the alleged victim, and two other family members went to dinner then watched a movie while drinking beer and wine at the home before the alleged assault occurred, according to prior court testimony.RELATED: Arizona police officer charged with raping San Diego womanThe alleged victim testified during a preliminary hearing in April that Elkins physically forced her to participate in sex acts despite her pleas for him to stop. The two other family members were asleep in the house so small "you can hear someone breathing in the next room," the woman testified.During the alleged assault, the woman said she asked Elkins what would happen if she cried out for help. "He said, ‘I would kill you,"' the woman testified. After the incident, the woman said she found another family member in the house and they called police.At a hospital, the alleged victim's blood-alcohol level was determined to be .09 percent, according to witness testimony.Besides forcible rape, Elkins is charged with rape of an intoxicated person, forcible digital penetration, two counts each of forcible oral copulation and oral copulation of an intoxicated person, forcible sexual penetration and sexual penetration of an intoxicated person.Elkins -- a seven-year veteran of the Yuma Police Department who later resigned -- faces 14 years in prison if convicted, according to Deputy District Attorney Lisa Fox. 1834

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A break-in at a home Wednesday left a newlywed couple without some wedding gifts and priceless family heirlooms."Just makes me sad this happened," said Lucy Piccinini, choking back tears.Lucy and her husband, Chris, recently married and bought their first home together in San Carlos. Chris discovered the break-in when he got home Wednesday.
