Mail bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc will be held without bond after making his first appearance Tuesday in a federal court in New York.The defense issued no objection to US Magistrate Judge Robert Lehrburger's decision. Sayoc's preliminary hearing was originally scheduled for Monday, but as courts are closed on Veteran's Day, his hearing has been rescheduled for Tuesday morning.In a letter, prosecutors had said they were asking that Sayoc be held without bond, based on his flight risk and the danger they said he posed to the community.Sayoc, who spent Monday night at the federal Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan after a charter transport flight from Florida, entered the courtroom wearing a navy blue prison uniform with a beige T-shirt underneath. He did not wear handcuffs or shackles.He conferred with public defender Sarah Jane Baumgartel, who sat next to him, and answered the judge's questions. Lehrburger officially appointed Baumgartel as his counsel.After the appearance, Sayoc and Baumgartel embraced before law enforcement officers led Sayoc out of the courtroom.The 56-year-old faces five federal charges: interstate transportation of an explosive, illegal mailing of explosives, threats against former presidents and other persons, threatening interstate communications and assaulting current and former federal officers.Sayoc is accused of sending at least 16 mail bombs to several targets, including CNN, former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. None of the devices detonated, and no one was injured. He was arrested October 26 in Florida.Daniel Aaronson, the attorney who represented him during proceedings in Florida, has said his client intended to plead not guilty to the crimes."Nobody has been able in a court of law to say that those were bombs that he sent," Aaronson said. MANAGUA, Nicaragua — Hurricane Iota is moving across northern Nicaragua with hurricane strength winds of around 85 mph after making landfall as a dangerous Category 4 storm. Iota came ashore along almost exactly the same stretch of Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast that was devastated by an equally powerful Hurricane Eta just 13 days earlier. Iota had intensified into an extremely dangerous Category 5 storm during the day Monday, but the U.S. National Hurricane Center says it weakened slightly as it neared the coast late Monday and made landfall with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph (250 kph). Eta’s torrential rains saturated the soil in the region, meaning Iota's rains have nowhere to go and could cause deadly landslides.In their 7 a.m. update, the National Hurricane Center said Iota is expected to create "flash flooding, landslides, life-threatening storm surge and powerful winds across portions of Central America Tuesday."The NHC says Iota is moving west, further inland, and will move across Honduras Tuesday night into Wednesday. LOVELAND RESERVOIR, Calif. (KGTV) - With Santa Ana winds in the forecast for Wednesday morning, Cal Fire stationed more than 500 firefighters in strategic spots to attack any hot spots that flared up in the Valley Fire burn area.The plan worked.Crews were able to recognize hot spot fires quickly and direct resources to fight them before early morning winds spread the flames across Lawson Valley.One flare-up started on a mountain peak just northeast of Loveland Reservoir. That area burned on Saturday, but Barona Fire Department Chief Ken Kremensky said embers stayed hot enough under the tree canopy to reignite Wednesday morning."The retardant coats the area," Kremensky explained. "But a lot of times in the heavier brush it lays along the top of the brush and it doesn't penetrate all the way the ground so there's hot stuff and it creeps in there. And once it creeps through the retardant, it gets into that open field starts to spread. If you get some wind on it and it picks up, you see the flame starting to show up."The fire was in a remote area that would take hand crews hours to reach. So, Cal Fire sent in a squad of helicopters.Helicopters from San Diego Gas & Electric, Cal Fire and the San Diego County Sheriff's Department took turns dousing the flames with water for nearly an hour, making multiple passes and filling up with water from the reservoir.After they left, military helicopters took over. By 11 a.m., the fire was mostly out."We'll just keep plugging away and hopefully the weather will cooperate with us and that'll be a good success," said Kremensky.Heavy winds never materialized, with gusts in the fire zone topping out at 30 miles an hour. Crews were able to handle several other hot spots that ignited and keep the flames within the fire perimeter.Kremensky said they were fortunate that the weather cooperated. 1862

One woman knows that fear all too well, but she overcame it and says you can too.“Every client I try to know their name,” said Whitney Herman, the owner of Shift Cycle. “Everyone who walks in the business I want to be their friends. I want them to feel like this is their home because I feel like it's my home."It’s been two years since Herman officially became a small business owner by opening Shift Cycle, a boutique indoor cycling studio offering 45-minute indoor cycling classes.The new mom couldn't find a place where she could work out and bring her newborn daughter along. “Pretty much everywhere that I wanted to go, none of them offered childcare,” Herman said.So, she decided to create a place of her own.Turns out many of us see ourselves as entrepreneurs as well. The UPS Store talked with people as part of its Inside Small Business Survey and found 66 percent of them dream of opening a small business. But fears may be holding many back, something Herman understands.“Terrifying,” Herman said. “I mean it's still scary.”Forty-five percent of people are concerned about financial security, and 39 percent are concerned about the financial commitment required to open the business.“I think the funding and financing for most people is the hardest part about starting a business,” Herman said.  She struggled to get a loan because many lenders require two years of business experience.“I mean there were times where we were like, ‘I don't think we're going to do it,’” Herman said.  “We would get so close and then we had a bank be like, ‘Oh sorry, we can't do it.’”She was able to get funding through a non-profit, but still struggled with a fear 37 percent of people in the study share; fear of failure.“I have no MBA,” Herman said. “I have no degree in anything business related. I've never really managed people. I don't really know anything about finance, so I was kind of going it's completely blind.”Luckily her husband knew more about those things. And what she lacked in those areas, she made up in passion and desire to learn along the way. If you have a dream of starting a business, Herman says you can do the same thing.“You just have to believe in your product,” Herman said. “And you have to believe in yourself that you're strong enough and motivated enough to just kind of fight.
