Every aspect of how children learn is being discussed right now, as public and private schools across the nation try to figure out how to safely get children back in the classroom. And it seems, the devil is entirely in the details. What will education look like this fall? The answer is complicated.Colleges are slowly coming up with plans, but school districts across the country are talking it out and discovering there's no easy answer.Music Watson, Chief of Staff for the San Diego County, California, Office of Education, said, “We’re looking at things like how do you physical distancing in a classroom? If students need to be 6 feet apart or can they be closer if they’re facing the same direction or if you add some shields or use a space that’s not traditionally a classroom like a library, could you have a class in there?”Most county offices like hers are an intermediary between local school districts and the state. They're now discussing new guidance from public health officials and from the California Department of Education, and they're trying to interpret that for local school districts.“Like symptom screening seems like a pretty easy thing, right, you come to school. you answer questions, get your temperature taken and go in,” Watson said, “except if you have a school with a thousand kids and you need to screen every single one. There’s a lot of logistics involved with that.”For symptom screening, you'll need thermometers, a way to record information, and a way to keep students apart. On buses if you're distancing, then you're reconfiguring how many students can be on that bus at a time.“This is a huge, multi-faceted problem and so we can’t just do it on our own we have to get employee associations, labor groups, parents involved,” Watson said. “We have to work with public health we can’t do it on our own.”The California Department of Public Health is handing out more than 47,000 thermometers, 2 million face shields, 143,000 gallons of hand sanitizer, 123,000 N95 masks, 16 million disposable masks, and 14 million cloth face coverings for staff and students. All of those will be distributed statewide. At the Lakeland School System in Memphis, Tennessee, Superintendent Dr. Ted Horrell said those face coverings, “May be the 2020 equivalent of ‘I forgot my pencil’ and the teacher comes up with a pencil”Which means, schools have to be ready for that. Lakeland Schools are already installing plexiglass shields in reception areas and putting hand sanitizing stations in every classroom. The district is getting Chromebooks ready in case there's a need to do distance learning entirely.Everyone wants a safe environment and there's still a lot of unknowns. When asked about a harsher cold and flu season and whether schools will be shut down again in the fall, Watson said, "It’s entirely possible that if we see a surge, that schools may need to go back to distance learning or may need to take some other tools out of their toolbox, which is why it’s important now to plan for every possibility because it is much easier to start at 100 and ramp down to 70 and then go back to 85 than start at 70 and then go back to 100.”All of these decisions are difficult for everyone, and it seems there's no middle ground. Many districts across the nation are sending out surveys asking for feedback about returning to school or doing a hybrid model. In areas without connectivity, parents may receive a physical handout. And, at the end of the day, educators want kids at school, but they won't do it until they know the nation's children-are safe.“Have a little grace we’re all doing the best we can that things are changing quickly, new guidance continues to come out and some of this will change and we have to be flexible and have a little grace because we’re all in this together and all trying to make it through,” Watson said. 3871

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - News of an arrest in connection to a fatal cyclist hit-and-run crash came as the victim's family mourned together on his favorite holiday. "Can't stop thinking about him and about that day," said Marc Engelhardt.Engelhardt calls the last week all-consuming and painful, since the moment he doubled back during a six-hour bike ride to see what was keeping his friends - only to discover the horrific aftermath. His friend Kevin Lentz, 36, a husband and new father, was struck and killed on an Escondido street, hit head-on by a dark sedan which promptly took off."Disbelief, surreal," said Engelhardt.RELATED: Friends mourn bicyclist killed in hit-and-run crashPolice say they discovered the heavily damaged car about a half mile away. On Thanksgiving, they announced the arrest of a suspect, 41-year-old Jamison Connor, on an unrelated parole warrant related to weapons, drugs and DUI charges."Certainly a sense of relief," said Engelhardt.Engelhardt says news of the arrest came as Lentz's family came together."Thanksgiving was his favorite holiday. He's a food guy. Yesterday was a special time for them ... They were trying to focus on how great Kevin was. Emotionally exhausting is probably the best way to put it, all these mixed feelings ... Very difficult. Obviously they are happy that the arrest happened," said Engelhardt.Police have not said how they linked Connor to the crash, only saying detectives 'developed information' he was behind the wheel.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help the family with expenses. 1566

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police in Escondido are joining law enforcement throughout the state in cracking down on distracted driving throughout April.Throughout the month, the city is deploying extra traffic officers thanks to grant-funded resources. Violators will be stopped and cited with fines set at 2 for first-time offenders. On April 5 and April 13, law enforcement officials all over the state are set to step up distracted driving enforcement.According to authorities, officers have issued hundreds of thousands of citations over the past three years to those texting or calling while driving.Recent legislation has even gone as far as to make it illegal to use a smartphone’s apps while driving."California’s distracted driving laws have been saving lives for a decade now,” said former State Senator Joe Simitian, who authored the state’s hands-free and no-texting laws. “Every day, somewhere in California, someone is sitting down to dinner with their family who wouldn't have made it through the day without these laws on the books. That’s tremendously gratifying.”Data from 2017 shows that nearly 22,000 were involved in distracted driving crashes throughout California.“Traffic safety has consistently been a top priority in Escondido,” said Chief Craig Carter. “If our enforcement and education campaign to eliminate distracted driving saves even one life, I would consider that a success.” 1420

ENCINITAS (CNS) - The Rancho Coastal Humane Society will take in 23 puppies, adolescent, and adult dogs from the Mexican state of Sonora this morning -- the latest in a series of lifesaving transports from Rescue Fenix in Obregon, working hand-in-paw with the humane society and Greater Good Charities."These dogs were rescued from the streets and taken to the Rescue Fenix shelter," said John Van Zante, RCHS spokesman. "They live in outdoor colony kennels. The puppies and smaller dogs compete for food with every other dog. Many of them would not survive if they were not taken in by Rescue Fenix then transferred out of there."The dogs began their 17-hour ride to Tijuana early Friday morning. They crossed the border early Saturday morning and then got some rest at the home of a Rescue Fenix volunteer in Escondido. The dogs are scheduled to be transferred to RCHS in Encinitas on Saturday morning. Rescue Fenix volunteer Georgina Parsa, who lives in Escondido, will complete the transfer."Our Medical team will perform examinations before the dogs are settled into their new kennels with food, water, and their first soft bedding," said Judi Sanzo, RCHS president. "Some of them will go into foster care with trained RCHS volunteers. In the coming days the dogs will receive more extensive exams, vaccinations, medical treatment including spay or neuter, and each dog will be micro chipped before becoming available for adoption."Sanzo said the relationship between Rancho Coastal Humane Society and Rescue Fenix is new, but it's already proven successful."From the first transfer, we were told that the dogs and puppies who arrived here would not have survived if we had not taken them. That's how important this is. Together -- we save lives," Sanzo said. For more information about Rancho Coastal Humane Society's adoptions visit www.sdpets.org or call 760-753-6413. 1882

Esteban Santiago has pleaded guilty to shooting and killing five people and injuring six others in the baggage area at a Fort Lauderdale Airport, and he says he doesn't know why he did it.The 28-year-old Anchorage, Alaska resident pleaded guilty to 11 charges in the January 6, 2017 attack at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in which he used a handgun to commit the act.Santiago says he "wasn't really thinking about it at the moment," according to an Associated Press report. The criminal has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, but was found competent for the legal proceedings, the AP said.Santiago was sentenced to life in prison plus 120 years. He waived all rights to appeal, the AP reports.“Today the man responsible for the horrific, devastating, and tragic attack on numerous innocent people at the Fort Lauderdale airport was held accountable for his crimes,” Miami U.S. Attorney Benjamin Greenberg said in a statement. A psychologist who met with the suspect throughout the past year says he is mentally better now and has started express shock and remorse for what he did. 1112
