Actress Katherine Helmond was a TV sitcom star in the 70s and 80s and continued acting well into her 80s before succumbing to complications from Alzheimer’s disease last week at the age of 89, Variety Magazine reported. Helmond reportedly died on Feb. 23, but her death was not made public until Friday.During her six-decade career as a thespian, Helmond earned a pair of Golden Globe Awards, and a number of Emmy nominations. But with that new responsibility comes great power — usually about 1100 watts of it.The Ball State University Police Department posted a hilarious reminder on their Facebook page telling students that the microwaves in their dorms do more than just warm snacks and reheat day-old coffee. They can also set off the fire alarms in the dorms."Every year starts with multiple fire alarms in Ball State Housing," Ball State Unviersity police posted on social media. "Most if not all of these fire alarms are preventable."They offered tips on how to heat up many college student staples, including Pop-Tarts, brownies, Kraft macaroni and cheese, oatmeal and popcorn.Pop-Tarts "must be removed from their aluminum foil prior to placing in the microwave," they wrote. "Microwave for 3 SECONDS not 3 minutes."They also gently reminded their Muncie, Indiana, students that brownies, mac and cheese and oatmeal usually need some kind of liquid added to them, whether it's milk or water.And, of course, they cited popcorn as the worst offender of setting off fire alarms unnecessarily. In a tweet thanking first responders, Faris said, "I’m not quite sure how to express gratitude to the north Lake Tahoe fire department- we were saved from carbon monoxide- it’s a stupidly dramatic story but I’m feeling very fortunate."According to a press release by the North Tahoe Fire Protection District, members of Faris' family began feeling ill Thursday night, with symptoms akin to altitude sickness. After two of the 13 people in the house were treated at a hospital, the hospital relayed that the illnesses were related to carbon monoxide poisoning. Two additional patients were transported to the hospital, and nine others were treated at the scene.When fire crews evacuated Faris' family from the home, they measured carbon monoxide levels nearly 6 times the recommended indoor level for carbon monoxide, even after the home was ventilated. The home, which was said to be a short-term rental, was not equipped with a carbon monoxide detector. Fire Chief Mike Schwartz of the North Tahoe Fire Protection District stressed that those using short-term rentals should check for working carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. “We are so thankful to report that this holiday disaster was averted,” said Fire Chief Mike Schwartz. “Situational awareness is so important. Authorities say the parents paid a college prep business to cheat on standardized tests and/or bribe college coaches in order to get their children into competitive universities.The hearing will be the first time the public hears anything of significance from Loughlin about her role in the scheme. Several brands have distanced themselves from the "Full House" actress and her daughter, 19-year-old social media influencer Olivia Jade Giannulli, since the charges were announced.Loughlin's husband, the fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, is also expected to appear in court Wednesday. Huffman's husband, the actor William H. Macy, is not charged in the case.CNN has reached out to representatives for Huffman, Loughlin and Giannulli but has not heard back.Of the 50 people charged in the case, so far four people have pleaded guilty or plan to plead guilty, according to prosecutors.Rick Singer, the mastermind of the scheme; Rudy Meredith, the Yale women's soccer coach who accepted a bribe to help a student get admitted; and Mark Riddell, who cheated for the students on the SATs and ACTs, are all cooperating witnesses for the prosecution.
