1918 saw the rise of a global pandemic that brought huge societal changes. That was a different time and a different, far more deadly, virus. But looking at how two American cities handled the Spanish Flu reveals an important lesson in dealing with our own pandemic. One city stopped the spread. But during that same timeframe in 1918, a different city took a different approach and was able to "flatten the curve" keeping the number of flu cases low enough that hospitals could deal with them.To understand the position these cities were in, you have to look back at the months leading up to their decision making.The virus that became known as Spanish Flu first appeared in early 1918. Rampant among military bases in both the U.S. and Europe, it spread rapidly as World War I brought opposing armies together in dire conditions.By the summer, the flu had tailed off enough that many health experts believed it was gone for good. But the fall brought a new surge of cases globally. And by September, city leaders across the U.S. knew the flu had begun actively spreading again.St. Louis handled this information very differently than Philadelphia. Within 2 days of detecting active cases, St. Louis leaders had forced closure for schools, churches, and any public gatherings of more than 20 people.The virus still spread throughout St. Louis. But through this "social distancing," the city kept its number of cases low and suffered far fewer casualties than Philadelphia. St. Louis steps a century ago look a lot like those taken after coronavirus cases showed up in Singapore and Hong Kong, where schools and public gatherings were quickly shut down and the virus' spread was slowed down. 2404

  

The government shutdown is flying into dangerous territory, according to several aviation leaders. The largest pilot union says the shutdown "is adversely affecting the safety, security and efficiency of our national airspace system." The National Air Traffic Controllers Association is also warning the shutdown is rapidly eliminating safety layers "in a system that has no room for error." “We're always worried about any kind of hiccup in the system,” says James Marinitti, with the association. “We're doing this interview. We can do a second take. We can do a third take. But for air traffic controllers, you only get one take. They work in a mistake-free environment, where we are expected to be right 100 percent of the time.” Right now, 3,000 support staff have been told not to come to work, which means fewer safety inspectors. That could lead to delay in repairing equipment, like a broken light on the runway that helps guide pilots and other equipment repairs.“Radar, preventative maintenance, these types of things that will get delayed as the shutdown continues, because the workers are not there to keep the system healthy,” Marinitti says. The shutdown is hitting air traffic controllers especially hard because of a 30-year low staffing shortage. They're not only understaffed, but they’re also currently working without pay and it's unknown when they'll get their next check. “The bills haven't come, yet, to be a problem, but we know that's there in the back of our heads,” says air traffic controller Alex Navarro. “And as the day goes on and the shutdown, it's getting more pronounced, so we're worried about it. It's just trying to fight back the doubt and the worry of not getting that paycheck.” The shutdown, causing stress as aviation workers try to navigate through turbulent times on and off the job. 1844

  

SEATTLE, Wash. – For most sports enthusiasts immersing themselves in the roar of a stadium is the best part of fan experience. This year, numerous NFL teams are tailoring their venues for a very distinct group of spectators – those who otherwise might not be able to join in. While the sights and sounds of attending a sporting event can make it an unforgettable experience, Traci Schneider knows it’s not for everyone. “For a lot of people that can be really, really overwhelming.” It’s why more and more teams are adding sensory rooms to their venues. We were given access to one at CenturyLink Field, home to the Seattle Seahawks. “This is a place to go and a place to be safe and kind of just a little break to get away from it all,” explained Schneider. “So, any fan can come in here.” Schneider’s 17-year-old son Ben has autism. “Sensory issues are a big challenge for him, and I know what that looks like as a mom,” said Schneider. “And you want to make the world a little bit easier for your kids to navigate.” She helped provide input for this space, because not only is she a mom of a child with autism, but she’s also married to the Seahawks’ general manager. Schneider says the room is meant to help people with autism, anxiety, PTSD and other sensory disorders. “We still have a TV so people can still watch what’s happening out on the field,” Schneider said. The Seahawk’s room features dimmable overhead lighting, hooded chairs, a calming bubble wall and a fiber-optic waterfall curtain. “They slowly change colors and they’re meant to be touched,” Schneider said. All of the items help to calm a person. In addition to the sensory room, the Seahawks are the first to offer autism kits that include noise cancelling headphones and information on when the loudest moments in the game are expected to happen, including pyrotechnics. Schneider says the ultimate goal is to provide a safe space for anyone who may need a temporary reprieve without making them feel like they’re missing out. “So just knowing that that is supporting our fans and making them feel welcome. I think is just huge.” 2134
