OCEAN BEACH (KGTV)- Big waves continue to pound the coast today. A High Surf Advisory is issued until Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Waves reached heights up to eight feet Thursday and along Ocean Beach Pier, some waves reached 10 feet. As we normally see during high surf, advanced surfers made their way to the beaches. In Ocean Beach, crews continued their work to repair the pier despite the high surf below. Waves up to 10 feet crashed into the pier. One Ocean Beach resident tells 10News, "you know we spend all this money to live here and this is one of our facilities, it's sad when its closed". Crews are still on track to reopen the pier by Memorial Day, according to the City of San Diego. 709

On Sunday morning, Annie Kane — a viewer of Scripps station KNXV in Phoenix — captured video of a coyote and snake coming face-to-face in Mesa, Arizona. The two don't get physical, but in the video the coyote tries lunging at the snake a few times.Ultimately, we don't know how this meeting came to an end but it still gave us a cool look at these native creatures interacting. Watch the video of the encounter in the player above.The video is the latest in a series of animal encounter videos in the region. On Saturday, a KNXV?viewer shared video of two bobcats fighting in Scottsdale.?Earlier in the week, a fight between a snake and a bobcat was captured by a KNXV viewer in Scottsdale as well.? 732

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Decades after serving in World War II, a North County veteran is receiving one of the nation’s highest honors. Willie Pong enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943; he was only 17 but lied about his age. He served almost three years as a ship's cook.Pong's parents were born in China and moved to America to give their kids a better life, which they did. But as a boy, Pong faced discrimination. On the campus of Howard University, Vice-president-elect, and alumna, Kamala Harris is never too far from sight.“It's important to note that she was a political science student,” said Howard University political science professor Niambi Carter.Carter says Harris’ election as vice-president is casting a renewed spotlight on her alma mater and the role of more than 100 Historically Black Colleges and Universities in America.“Howard University has been around since 1867,” Carter said, going on to add, “It's not validation for us because we know the intellectual labor and what we contribute in these spaces, but I think the world is just sort of catching up to what many people already knew about HBCUs and why they're so special and so significant.”It’s a similar story about 20 miles northeast of Howard University at Bowie State University in Maryland, also an HBCU, and founded before the end of the Civil War.“We’re the oldest HBCU in the state of Maryland,” said Aminta Breaux, president of Bowie State University, who is also on the President’s Board of Advisors for HBCUs.Breaux said Vice-president-elect Kamala Harris’ HBCU education is a point of pride.“I'm just overjoyed to see my students so excited and full of joy and recognizing what this means in the history, not just in our HBCUs of this country, of all the individuals seeing her and thinking, ‘If she can do that, maybe I can, too,’” Breaux said.HBCU’s are located in Washington, D.C. and 19 states, mostly in the South and East. They make up just three percent of higher learning institutions across the country but account for about 20 percent of African American college graduates.“Our endowments across the board, in comparison to predominantly white institutions, pale in comparison,” Breaux said. “And so we need greater philanthropic support, private support, as well as federal and state support.”It comes as, over the years, the students attending HBCUs have become increasingly diverse, including at Howard University.“If you're thinking that this space is closed and it's only open to African-Americans, or people who are identified as Black, it is not,” Howard’s Professor Carter said. “It is a space that is open for all.”It is a historic space attracting new attention in the present. 2280

OPELIKA, Alabama — A Florida man whose mugshot went viral last week was arrested again early Wednesday morning in Alabama. Charles Dion McDowell, 31, was booked into the Lee County, Alabama, Detention Facility on charges including attempting to elude, second-degree possession of marijuana, driving with license revoked, reckless driving and improper lane usage, according to jail records. McDowell was released after posting his ,400 bond.His mugshot went viral last week when he was arrested in by deputies in Escambia County, Florida.The sheriff's office posted his mugshot on Facebook, after he was arrested for fleeing/eluding police with lights and sirens active, possession of meth with intent to sell/manufacture/deliver, possession of cocaine with intent to sell/manufacture/deliver schedule ii, possession of controlled substance without a prescription, possession of marijuana and possession of drug equipment.He was released shortly after he posted his ,000 bond. 1013
