One superintendent is making headlines for arming his classrooms, with a bucket of stones. The Pennsylvania superintendent says under current laws, this was the best he could come up with -- Filling up a five-gallon bucket with rocks."If an armed intruder attempts to gain entrance into any of our classrooms, they will face a classroom full of students armed with rocks, and they will be stoned," said David Helsel. This idea of how to protect his students in the event of an active shooter situation has received praise and ridicule."You can throw them very hard and they will cause pain, which can distract," said Helsel. 630

Now we know the explosions could strike anyone. The latest bombing in the Texas capital was detonated by a tripwire along a residential street, police say.The Sunday night blast was the fourth explosion in less than a month to terrify the nearly 1 million residents of Austin. Here's what we know about the Austin bombings, and the questions that remain unanswered: 376

On Election Day, Krispy Kreme will be passing out free glazed doughnuts. The chain will also giveaway "I Voted" stickers along with the sweet treat.“If you’re out and about on Election Day, we want to thank you by giving you a free Original Glazed doughnut,” said Dave Skena, Chief Marketing Officer of Krispy Kreme, in a press release. “And if you didn’t get you an ‘I Voted’ sticker because you voted before Election Day, we’ve got you covered there too.”The chain added that you do not need to prove that you voted to receive the free doughnut and sticker. 566

Once a month, a luxury coach pulls up to a gated community in Orange County, California. All the passengers inside are seniors, and the bus takes them to a marijuana dispensary.Arthur Greenspan is a first-time rider, and he’s taking the trip to the dispensary in hopes to buy cannabis that will help get him off pain pills.Sandy Sopher, however, is a frequent rider to the dispensary.“I have tried smoking the bud; I’ve got vaporizer, edibles,” Sopher says. “Need to realize we're not a bunch of crazy people. We just want help.”Seniors make up a growing customer base for pot shops. And places like Bud and Bloom in Orange County are helping their senior customers get there by offering a free bus service.New visitors like Greenspan start by getting a class on cannabis. But for returning customers like Sopher, they are free to head straight to the bud."This is a sativa,” Sopher explains. “It is good if you wanna stay awake during the day. You wanna do your laundry. You want a little lift. You have pain, but you wanna function.”Sopher says her only regret is the fact her 99-year-old father won’t give it a try."Because of the stigma, and oh, what if the neighbors know? What will they think?" she says. However, Sopher says it’s a stigma she shed a long time ago. 1278

Of all the campaign slogans for 2020, Allison Ali is following motherly advice from her childhood.“My Mama always said, ‘if you don’t vote, you don’t have a voice,’” she said. “So, it’s put up or shut up.”Ali is taking those wise words on the road and also taking voters to the polls for free.“It’s important to me, because everybody needs to be heard,” she said. This election season, Ali is one of hundreds of people working for the Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America during a campaign called “Roll to the Polls.”“We have a real opportunity to impact the elections,” said NACA CEO Bruce Marks.Marks’ team has 100 vans in Atlanta and 50 more in Houston with a goal of getting 100,000 voters from their houses to their polling locations free of charge.“It is very emotional because we’ve been through a lot,” Marks said of these free rides. “We’ve seen the voter suppression and we’ve seen how people’s rights are taken away. So, it’s crucial that everybody’s voice is heard.”Across the country, rideshare apps, colleges and even some concerned citizens are offering voters free rides to the election sites. While some political science experts warn that free rides could be used as a way to manipulate voters, others are calling it a sign of inspiration.“I want to do my part, honestly, to get them out,” said Atlanta-based voter Pamela Chaney, a self-described vibrant senior.Chaney says this election is the most crucial of her lifetime and that’s why she’s now thinking about volunteering to drive voters to polls, especially those in her community, where public transportation isn’t an option.“A lot of people probably want to come out, but they don’t have the means; transportation. They’re probably elderly,” she said.According to the American Association of Retired People, 71% of Americans over the age of 65 voted during the last presidential election, a group Ali hopes to steer clear from any of kind of voter suppression.“We have people who think their votes aren’t going to count,” she said. “They don’t think the mail is going to get their in time. That’s a scary thing.”While behind the wheel, Ali is still following her mother’s advice and driving down a road that others helped pave the way.“We have ancestors that fought for us to be able to come out here and vote,” she said. “This election for me is very important.” 2355
