SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police saved a driver whose SUV got stuck in the path of an oncoming train in Little Italy Tuesday morning.The vehicle was stuck on the track at 1:30 a.m. near West Grape Street and California Street, approximately 100 yards south of the railroad crossing.Police were on the scene and helped the driver out of the SUV, according to San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies who assisted in the investigation.A southbound Amtrak train was traveling 35 miles an hour when the train operator saw the vehicle on the track.The operator applied the emergency brake but was unable to stop in time, and collided with the vehicle.The driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI. Neither the driver nor any passenger on the train was hurt. 771

These military working dogs are trained and trusted to protect service members and civilians overseas and at home."The bond between handler and K-9 is indescribable. When I was assigned a dog, I could look at my dog and know what it needed before it could tell me, and vice versa," said Lt. Kristopher Evers, part of the military police force at Camp Pendleton. All military dogs begin their journey at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, selected for their willingness to work. After basic training, they're sent to a new post and assigned a handler. K-9's trained in the Military Working Dog Program at Camp Pendleton go on to either serve alongside military police on the base or in conflicts overseas. The Marine Corps has nearly 300 working dogs; the entire military has about 2,700, according to the United States War Dogs Association, Inc. Handlers use the Agility Course at Camp Pendleton to train K-9 Marines to perform outside their comfort zone, giving them the confidence to do the job. Dogs are tasked with jobs like detecting explosives, narcotics, and apprehending suspects."Training is consistent, it's every day, and it's all the time," said Evers. Evers says the dogs are very much Marines and an important part of their military family. One of the most famous K-9 heroes is Lucca, remembered for leading 400 patrols with no human casualties on her watch. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Stopping aggressive behavior before it starts is one of the many goals for schools within the San Ysidro School District.The San Ysidro School District partnered up with the District Attorney’s office to teach staff members restorative practices in school. These practices help students deal with their emotions and understand their behaviors.Kids take a few minutes a day to express how they feel and address different topics like who they trust and why. This practice is a way to swap punishment and instead provide support in hopes of reducing crime, bullying, and violence.RELATED: Bullying a major concern as kids go back to school“This is giving these students an opportunity to be more successful because when emotions get involved and you don’t know why you have them, and you don’t know how to deal with them that’s when a lot of students get in trouble,” said Manuela Colom-Ramirez.The District Attorney’s office and the and the San Ysidro School District hope this program provides an action plan guideline for students, staff, and parents.“It’s all under the philosophy that when you are doing with, rather than to, you are going to get more inspired kids, you are going to get more inspired youth, and we are able to build a more sustainable community,” said Khemal Johnson. 1319

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego’s rainy winter led to a bug-infested spring which is, in turn, giving away to a spider-filled summer. County of San Diego officials say 2019 could bring a “bumper crop” of orb weaver spiders due to an increase of its food supply. “So, you’re probably going to be running into a lot of spider webs very soon, if you haven’t already,” said County supervising vector ecologist Chris Conlan. Conlan has a term for what happens after a person walks into a web: the crazy spider dance. Orb weaver spiders, which include any spider that weaves a web, are usually not harmful to people, according to Conlan. They generally don’t bite unless they’re threatened. “A well-fed female can be a pretty imposing spider,” Conlan said to County News Center. “But they’re generally nothing to be worried about. In all honesty, if you run into their web, their general reaction is to bail off quick. They don’t like to hang around once something that’s big enough to smash through their web hits it. They know it’s not anything they want to tackle and wrap up to eat.” Conlan recommends avoiding walking through areas spiders can use as anchor points.
