TIANJIN, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations' chief climate change negotiator applauded China on Monday for its efforts in dealing with the challenge of climate change, saying she was impressed by the determination of the Chinese people and their government.Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change(UNFCCC), made the remarks in China's northern city of Tianjin at a welcoming reception held by the Chinese government.A new round of UN climate talks is being held in the port city on Oct. 4-9 in preparation for the year-end Cancun summit in Mexico."Here in Tianjin, I have seen much evidence of determination," said Figueres."(I saw the) determination of the government of China to reduce their CO2 emissions per unit of GDP by up to 45 percent by 2020, (and the) determination of the people of China to turn China into the world's leader in renewable energy technology and to find a visionary balance among economic development, poverty eradication and climate protection."Figueres also praised the host city, saying, "(I saw the) determination of the government of Tianjin, China's fourth-largest city, to be a model city for the circular economy, a pilot city for low-carbon growth and an exemplary city for sustainable development.""A striking example is the Tianjin Eco-City project between Singapore and China and with significant private sector investment, which will provide eco-friendly housing for some 350,000 people," she added.More than 3,000 delegates from 177 parties and observer states and over 200 non-governmental organizations are attending the Tianjin gathering, the final one prior to the United Nations Climate Change Conference to be held in Cancun at the end of this year.Figueres concluded her speech at the reception with a Chinese proverb, "Zhong Zhi Cheng Cheng," which means "With everyone's determination, we can do anything." She also urged all the participants to make concerted efforts to reach a consensus during the climate talks.  

BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) - China's top economic planning agency Thursday urged authorities nationwide to step up supervision to stabilize prices in food, transportation and tourism during the upcoming holidays.Focus should be attached to cracking down on price rigging, including circulating misleading or false information about price hikes, commodity hoarding or forcing up prices of grain, cooking oil, meat, eggs and dairy products, said an official from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).The official also asked involved departments to ramp up measures to regulate prices of public transportation and in the tourism industries, while curbing arbitrary price hikes and irregular charges.Complaints and reports from the public will be accepted at hotline phone number "12358", said the official.This year's Mid-autumn Festival holiday is Sept. 22 to 24, and the National Day holiday lasts from Oct. 1 to 7.

ANKARA, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in Ankara on Thursday night for a three-day official visit to Turkey.Turkey is the last leg of Wen's four-nation tour, which has taken him to Greece, Belgium and Italy. ROME, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- China and Italy are working on a plan to expand their bilateral economic cooperation as the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the China-Italy diplomatic ties is just round the corner, said Chinese Ambassador to Italy Ding Wei on Saturday.The Chinese government is happy to see an enhanced and deepened economic ties between the two countries, said Ding while meeting with Adriano Luci, chairman of the industry association in Italy's northeastern city of Udine.He said Udine enjoyed a well-developed industrial capacity and saw ever-closer ties among Chinese and Italian firms.Ding hoped the association could encourage its member companies to champion the cooperation between Chinese enterprises and their Italian counterparts so as to materialize common development.Luci briefed Ding on Udine's industrial development, its companies' investment in China as well as their participation in the on-going Shanghai World Expo.He said he is willing to see the Italian and Chinese companies having more exchanges and further expanded areas of cooperation.According to Invitalia, the Italian official agency for promoting overseas investment and enterprise development, investment from Chinese companies in Italy has surged since 2000 and mainly goes to three main sectors, namely the automotive industry, logistics and machinery.Bilateral trade volume between China and Italy in the first half of 2010 registered a 36.3 percent rise compared to that of the same period last year, reaching some 20 million U.S. dollars.

BEIJING, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's disaster relief authorities on Monday issued a national early disaster warning to gear up for super typhoon Megi, which is expected to batter China's southern coastal areas.The Ministry of Civil Affairs and the State Disaster Relief Commission, which agreed to activate the response, issued urgent notices to the civil affairs departments in the regions along the southern coast -- Hainan,Guangdong, Guangxi and Fujian -- to prepare for relief operations.Possibly the strongest typhoon to hit China this year, Megi, which means "catfish" in Korean, is expected to reach the eastern South China Sea around Tuesday midnight, bringing strong winds and rain to the four regions along the coast.The notices ordered local civil affairs departments to closely monitor the typhoon, take precautionary measures against possible geological disasters and flooding in cities, and ensure that people in vulnerable areas are evacuated on time.The 13th typhoon of the year, Megi is packing winds of up to 260 km per hour, making it the strongest typhoon to appear in the northwest Pacific since 1990 and the strongest typhoon of the year worldwide, according to China's National Meteorological Center.
