BEIJING, May 14 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture Friday ordered local departments to strengthen field management to ensure the summer grain output after prolonged extreme weather in some areas.China faced with a challenging grain situation this summer as persistent cold weather had ravaged major production zones since the winter, which prolonged growing season for wheat and raised the risk of dry hot wind and heavy rains during the harvest time, said Wei Chao'an, Vice Minister of Agriculture.Wei urged authorities to intensify disaster and pest disease prevention, and to quickly harvest in fine weather.According to the ministry, China needs to maintain an annual grain output of 500 million tonnes to feed the nation's 1.3 billion people.China's summer grain output rose six years in a row to top 123.35 million tonnes last year, 2.6 million tonnes more than the previous year. BEIJING, April 7 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government encourages Chinese businesses to set up economic and trade cooperation zones in member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to deepen cooperation, a senior commerce official said Wednesday.Vice Minister of Commerce Gao Hucheng, speaking at a preparatory meeting for the seventh China-ASEAN Expo, said China and ASEAN members have strengthened economic and trade cooperation since the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA) came into effect on Jan. 1 this year.Customs data showed that bilateral trade totalled 39.12 billion U.S. dollars in the first two months of 2009, up 66 percent from a year ago.Chinese exports to ASEAN states rose 52.9 percent to 18.69 billion U.S. dollars while imports from ASEAN jumped 80.2 percent to 20.43 billion U.S. dollars.Gao called upon "eligible" Chinese enterprises to "go overseas" to ASEAN countries to set up economic and trade zones with infrastructure and industrial chains.He also said the two sides should implement the agreement on trade and expand trade, calling for an increase in the trade of high value-added products, including mechanical and electrical products and other hi-tech products.The two sides' enterprises should further expand cooperation and deepening ties in the agricultural, manufacturing, infrastructure, resources, and processing sectors, he said.The CAFTA, covering a population of about 1.9 billion, is the world's third largest trade agreement in terms of trade volume, after the European Union and the North American Free Trade Area.The ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.Under the CAFTA, the average tariff on goods from ASEAN countries entering China has been cut to 0.1 percent from 9.8 percent, while the six original ASEAN members - Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand - slashed the average tariff on Chinese goods entering ASEAN states from 12.8 percent to 0.6 percent.The seventh China-ASEAN Expo will be held in Nanning, capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, from Oct. 20 to 24 this year.

URUMQI, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Internet services were resumed in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Friday, 10 months after a riot in Urumqi on July 5, the regional government said.In a document released by its press office, Xinjiang's regional government said Internet services were "fully resumed" in line with the region's needs for maintaining stability and boosting social and economic development.The move was also aimed at meeting the Xinjiang residents' requests for information, it said.Xinjiang has 7 million Internet users.The government expressed appreciation for the netizens' understanding and support when Internet connection, international long-distance calls and mobile phone text messages were cut in some areas of Xinjiang after the July 5 riot.Disruption of communication was aimed at cracking down on the riot quickly and prevent violence from happening again, as the riot was believed to have been orchestrated by separatists via the Internet, text message and long-distance telephone calls.Resumption of Internet services in Xinjiang has been a gradual process. Access to two leading news websites, xinhuanet.com and people.com.cn, was restored in December, followed by access to another two portal websites, sina.com.cn and sohu.com, on Jan. 10.Email services were resumed in March. International long-distance calls and mobile texting services have also been resumed gradually.
