SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Unified School District officials confirmed to 10News Thursday that a teacher has been placed on leave while investigators look into accusations that he exposed a sixth-grade class to pornography.Officials said they were first notified Monday after a parent reported the alleged incident happened during a physical education class at Horace Mann Middle School, located at 4345 54th Street in San Diego."San Diego Unified is investigating the incident that allegedly occurred at Mann Middle School. The employee has been placed on leave pending the investigation,” district officials said.The district said it has spoken with at least 10 students regarding the report. There were at least 24 students in the class.District officials and district police are investigating."It's reprehensible," Craig Tinson, whose 12-year-old grandson attends the school, said. "Becuase the students are very impressionable. They're looking for adults to be the leader and unfortunately, it was compromised on this occasion."A parent of one of the students told 10News that her son was in the class when the teacher allegedly showed the students an adult video of a man and woman engaged in sexual activities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — St. Augustine High School, an all-boys Catholic school in North Park, has filed a lawsuit against California Gov. Gavin Newsom and other state officials to allow the school to reopen for in-person instruction.The school says that after holding its summer school and athletic programs in-person for more than 400 students without any reports of COVID-19 cases, they are seeking to stop the state's enforcement against in-person classes during the pandemic this fall."At Saints, we don’t believe remote learning is sufficient to provide a quality education our students are entitled to and our families have come to expect," said Principal James Horne. "We are confident we can open our school safely, consistent with CDC and San Diego County health guidance. We ran a safe and successful summer school program and believe it is an indicator that we can safely return to school in the fall."The school says it adhered to the county's public health guidelines and safety measures during its summer programs, including required to face masks, social distancing requirements, air conditioning systems using UV lights to sanitize the air, and buildings and classrooms being regularly sanitized with an electrostatic disinfecting mist system.St. Augustine also said a distance learning option would still be offered for families who don't want to send their children back to school in-person."After appeals from many families to return to the classroom, Saints is pursuing the best way to offer opportunities that are the right fit for all its students and families," the school said. 1604

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Santa Ana winds have fueled the most destructive wildfires in San Diego’s history, including the Cedar Fire in 2003 and the Witch Creek Fire in 2007.But why do Santa Anas form and what makes them so effective at spreading fire?Typically, during the day, San Diego’s winds blow from the ocean to the shore. These onshore winds tend to carry a lot of water vapor.However, Santa Ana winds blow the opposite direction, from the east to the west, and they have all the ingredients fires need to spread.“Strong winds,” said National Weather Service San Diego meteorologist Philip Gonsalves. “They’re typically very dry, and we usually end up with warmer conditions.”Strong. Dry. Hot. A fourth key factor elevating the fire danger is the timing of this wind pattern.“They typically occur in the fall, which is that time of the year when the fuel moistures are very low, and so the fuels are primed for ignition,” Gonsalves said.Winds flow from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure. Santa Anas form when there is high pressure over the Great Basin, located in Nevada and parts of Utah, and low pressure over Southern California.The winds are coming from the desert, but that’s not why they’re hot. They are hot for the same reason that air coming out of a bicycle pump is hot, Gonsalves said. It’s because the air is getting compressed.As the winds flow west out of the Great Basin, they travel over mountains. At high elevations, the air is very cool, but as the winds move downslope into lower elevations where the pressure is higher, the air gets compressed. That compression rapidly drives up the temperature in what’s called the Adiabatic Process.This process also dries out the air, and dry air can heat up much faster.As the winds move downslope, they pass over ridges and through canyons, which act like funnels, speeding up the winds.Santa Ana winds can pop up any time the Great Basin is cooler than Southern California, typically from September to May. But peak season is considered to be October.The Santa Ana event on Tuesday is falling a little before the peak season because of the positioning of highs and lows in the Northern Hemisphere, Gonsalves said, but the end result is the same: strong, dry, warm winds and extreme fire danger. 2281

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Maritime Museum is giving families the chance to spend the night on the seas — but stay in San Diego.The museum's "Family Overnight" program offers a stay aboard the Star of India, the oldest active sailing ship in the world. Families will embark on imaginary voyage learning about the lives and times of the India's passengers in the 19th century.Instructors will be in character and in costume, as they teach various ship-centric tasks like moving cargo and raising sails. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's love for giant pandas has been a 30-year commitment.Since 1987, when the zoo hosted two pandas (Basi and Yuan Yuan) for 200 days, San Diego has been enthralled with the giant black-and-white bears.What would eventually follow would be a 12-year partnership with China's Wolong Panda Preserve to support research and conservation of the animal — and a local appetite as big as a panda's to see the animal up close.RELATED: San Diego Zoo to send pandas Bai Yun and Xiao Liwu to ChinaThe zoo's first two pandas, Bai Yun and Shi Shi, arrived in 1996. A new exhibit to showcase the pandas was constructed and their popularity among San Diegans — and visitors from around the world — took off.Bai Yun would go on to mother six more pandas:Hua Mei, the San Diego Zoo's first panda cub, was born in August 1999. She would be given to Wolong Giant Panda Conservation Center in China, per the conservation agreement, in February 2004.
