LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - A construction worker killed on the UC San Diego campus in La Jolla was remembered Friday by his colleagues. Sergio Cruz, 32, was among five workers injured Thursday morning near Mandler Hall at Muir Lane and Scholars Drive. A 35-foot wall of rebar fell on Cruz, Cal/OSHA said. He later died at the hospital. Cruz and the other injured workers are employees of Clark Construction. The company said Thursday it was conducting an investigation. The San Diego County Building & Construction Trades Council said Cruz had worked in construction for eight years. “He was a skilled tradesman who was well-respected by those working alongside him,” said council spokesperson Carol Kim.The crew was building a mixed-use dorm and classroom building at the time of the accident. 805

Matt Bevin on April 26 signed House Bill 528, which makes Kentucky the first state in the country to establish a blanket presumption "that joint custody and equally shared parenting time is in the best interest of the child" in every divorce case."This should lead to less fighting between parents because we're not pitting parents against parents anymore in a winner-take-all situation," National Parents Organization Kentucky chairman Matt Hale said. (KGTV) - A potentially flammable sea flare washed ashore at La Jolla Shores Tuesday, leading to a San Diego Fire-Rescue Bomb Squad investigation.A person who was walking on the beach near Kellogg Park found the flare canister and took it to the lifeguard station. The witness did not notify lifeguards, who found it about 3 p.m.Lifeguard Lt. Rich Stropky said the flare had not been detonated and still posed a danger, despite the presence of water in the canister.The device appears to be similar to an MK 58 Mod 1 marine location marker. An online description indicates the marker is designed to be a smoke and flames reference-point marker on the ocean’s surface. It is used for antisubmarine warfare, search-and-rescue operations, man-overboard markings, and as a target for practice bombings.The bomb squad reached out to the military Tuesday for guidance in the emergency.
