(KGTV) - Loved ones are mourning the COVID-related death of an Oceanside grandfather who worked security on the Sprinter train.Matthys Kemp, 67, first became sick around mid-September."A cough and fever. Just thought he was coming down with a bug," said daughter Rinali HillNot long after, his symptoms got worse. Hill says on September 20th, he ended up in the ER."They admitted him. He had double pneumonia and COVID," said Hill.After two weeks on oxygen, Kemp was placed on a ventilator and sedated. He developed a blood clot in his leg and kidney issues.On November 1, Kemp, a father of two and grandfather of three, passed away."Just glad he's not in pain anymore," said a tearful Hill.Hill says her father was kind, generous and well-liked."He definitely had a huge smile and huge heart for everybody," said Hill.Hill says Kemp worked with the North County Transit District for the past decade, including the last five years for the contractor that provides security on the Sprinter train."He loved his job. Felt like he had a purpose, showing up every day in his vest. Felt like it was his Superman cape. Took pride in getting people to their destinations," said Hill.Hill isn't sure where her father contracted the virus, but says he was diligent about wearing a mask at work.His long-held wish, known to his family for years, was to have his body donated to science. Hill says when she reached out to local research facilities, they say it wouldn't be possible because of his COVID-19 diagnosis."That’s what he wanted and unfortunately we couldn’t do that for him," said Hill.Hill is now sharing her father's story, urging others to take precautions."Please wear a mask ... This virus can leave behind a family that can’t say goodbye in person, couldn't get hold their hand. (KGTV) — MiraCosta College fell victim this week to vandalism from a white supremacy group.In a letter to students, university President Sunita Cooke said the incident occurred Wednesday involving vandalism by a white supremacy group.The letter didn't elaborate on what was exactly done on campus, only that the vandalism violated the college's "values of inclusion and serve to incite fear within our campus community."RELATED: CSU San Marcos police take down white nationalist posters"The district strongly opposes racist acts. To be clear – any doctrine that elevates one group above another has no place at this college. (KGTV) - Students at El Camino High School have a chance to put their stamp on pop culture.They're designing shoes for the Vans Custom Culture competition.El Camino High School is one of just 500 schools in the country to be picked for the contest. More than 200 students submitted designs at the school, but only two will advance to the national competition.Sophomore Isiah Duran is one of the students whose design was chosen."I basically did what I thought was Oceanside," he says. "The pier, sunsets, the beach."The students could make designs based on two categories, "Local Flavor" and "Off the Wall.""It resonates with the younger culture," says El Camino Art Teacher Diego De La Luz. "It resonates with activities that range from biking to skateboarding and really just the Southern California vibe which Oceanside is all about."The winner will receive ,000 for their school's art department. Vans will also endow a scholarship for a student from the winning school to attend the Laguna Art Institute.De La Luz says the students will decide how to spend the money at the school if they win. (KGTV) - Lifeguards saw a lot more people up and down San Diego's beaches, and with that, a lot more rule breakers."It’s definitely the start of summer, we’ve been pretty busy this weekend," Del Mar Lifeguard Chief Jon Edelbrock said.In Oceanside 10News saw a couple families staked out under umbrellas brought from home, just feet away a man was buried in the sand. All of which is not yet allowed under county orders.Right now you are allowed to exercise on the beach, walk or jog. In the water people can swim, surf, boat and fish. You cannot have gatherings, play sports or sit on the beach.Edelbrock said most of the crowd is following the rules, "probably 80% are coming down with good intentions."That other 20% then has to be contacted by police or lifeguards trying to enforce orders to stop the spread of the coronavirus."Their [lifeguards'] primary function is to facilitate safety out in the ocean to watch the water, watch over our kids and make rescues and do first aide and that kind of thing. Daily we’re making 1,000 extra contacts for people not considering the current rule set," Edelbrock said today's water conditions weren't great, making it more important to keep an eye seaward.In Pacific Beach a neighbor snapped a photo of a woman holding her dog, standing on the closed boardwalk while an officer was writing something.
