SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials reported 3,252 COVID-19 infections today, while virus-related hospitalizations continued to increase as the first batch of Moderna vaccines arrived in the area.The number of daily infections reported Monday marked the third- highest daily increase since the pandemic began, following only Friday's 3,611 and Saturday's 3,493. Together with Wednesday's 2,807 cases and Thursday's 2,604, the top five-highest daily case counts have all occurred in the past week.Monday's total also marked the third time the number of daily infections has surpassed 3,000 and the 21st consecutive day with more than 1,000 cases. It was also the 14th day overall with more than 2,000 new cases.The new cases gave the county a cumulative total of 129,717 confirmed cases from throughout the pandemic. The county also announced three more COVID-related deaths, raising the overall death toll to 1,283.Another 32 people were hospitalized as of Monday, with one additional person sent to an intensive care unit. A total of 1,296 people were hospitalized due to the virus, with 334 of those in ICUs -- both records.A drop of 43 non-COVID patients in the region's ICU freed up space Monday. Roughly 22% of ICU beds were available in San Diego County, compared to 19% reported Sunday.Rady Children's Hospital reported Monday it has received a second batch of the Pfizer vaccine, along with the first vials of the Moderna vaccine. ``We began vaccinating our highest risk team members last week,'' according to the hospital. ``This latest shipment is another big step forward, allowing us complete our highest risk staff and to begin offering the vaccine to those in our high risk categories. We are in the process of notifying the next wave of team members who are eligible to schedule their vaccination.''The new batches of vaccines will join the 28,275 Pfizer doses that arrived last week in the region, with first priority going to civilian acute health care workers. Gavin Newsom said Monday the regional stay-at-home order imposed by the state for the entirety of Southern California will almost assuredly be extended beyond next week's expiration date.``We are likely, I think it's pretty self-evident, going to need to extend those regional dates,'' Newsom said. ``... Based upon all the data and based upon all these trend lines, it is very likely based on those current trends that we'll need to extend that stay at home order, (which) you recall was a three-week order when we announced it.''The stay-at-home order took effect at 11:59 p.m. Dec. 6, and was originally set to end on Dec. 28. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County health officials have reported 2,490 new COVID-19 infections and 14 new deaths, marking 104,958 total cases and 1,151 total deaths.Saturday marked the fourth consecutive day that more than 2,000 new cases were reported, with 2,867 cases -- a record -- reported Friday, 2,050 reported Thursday and 2,104 Wednesday. It is also the 12th day with more than 1,000 new cases. It is just the sixth time the daily cases have crossed 2,000 -- all of which have come in the past week.Of 27,599 tests reported Saturday, 9% returned positive.The number of hospitalizations continued to rise, with 38 people hospitalized and four patients put in intensive care units. The COVID-19- related hospitalizations increased to 965 -- 249 in ICUs. Since the pandemic began, 5,064 or 4.9% of cases have been hospitalized due to coronavirus, 1,098, or 1.1% have been sent to the ICU.The county's hospitals have 16% of their ICU beds available, down from 21% Thursday. The state now estimates the ICU bed availability in the 11- county Southern California region at 6.2%, down from 7.7% on Thursday.Of the 4,627 people hospitalized in the county, 20% are due to COVID- 19, and 44% of ICU patients. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City Council President Georgette Gomez announced Thursday she will place a proposed ballot measure to expand police oversight and create an Independent Police Practices Commission on the docket for the June 23 council meeting."The murder of George Floyd has exposed a crumbling faith in government and mistrust of police that must be addressed immediately," Gomez said. "It's critical that we build trust between communities and law enforcement and restore the public's faith in police oversight. We need to address the reality that many communities have been treated unfairly by police and have nowhere to turn to correct injustice."During a marathon meeting Tuesday that lasted about 10 hours, dozens of people phoned in during the public comment period and called for defunding the police and voicing support for the Black Lives Matter movement."I want the public to know that we are advancing the Independent Police Practices Commission measure without delay, and my hope is to bring together everyone on the council -- Democrat, Republican, Independent -- for a unanimous vote," Gomez said. "The time is now to create real dignity and respect for all our communities, but specifically our black and brown communities."Gomez said she has supported the measure since a version of it was proposed in 2017.The measure would create an independent commission with investigators, staff and subpoena power -- modeled after the city's Ethics Commission -- to review community complaints of police misconduct and recommend reforms to the City Council and the San Diego Police Department.Councilwoman Monica Montgomery, who chairs the council's Committee on Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods, has been a driving force behind the measure since its introduction."From the beginning of my administration, my office has worked honestly and diligently to advocate for police reform, through transparency and accountability measures," she said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Tuesday that it will make its inclement weather shelter program available to homeless residents in the county's unincorporated areas. The agency's Housing and Community Development Services division activates the shelter when rain is expected for at least two days, reaches two inches in a 24-hour period or when a storm includes a threat of flash flooding. County officials monitor seven unincorporated zones to determine when to activate the shelter program. Homeless residents can contact 211 San Diego between noon and 7 p.m. to be connected to a shelter provider. In some cases, residents are eligible to receive assistance with transportation to an inclement weather shelter. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council received a handful of presentations Tuesday intended to help the city address homelessness as well as the lack of transitional and permanent affordable housing.Entities presenting to the council included the Regional Task Force on the Homeless, San Diego County, Mayor Kevin Faulconer's office, the San Diego Housing Commission, San Diego State University's Institute for Public Health and the council's Select Committee on Homelessness.Representatives from each office discussed challenges and successes fighting homelessness in San Diego last year.
