A Texas mother was diagnosed with blood cancer earlier this year. Doctors didn't expect her to make it, until a bishop from Corpus Christi stepped in. Bishop Michael Mulvey registered to be a marrow donor over 10 years ago. He said after a few years he had forgot about it, but when he received the call, he rose to the occasion, ultimately saving this woman’s life. A Texas mother of three was diagnosed with blood cancer and was no longer producing the healthy blood cells she needed to survive. But through ‘Be the Match’, a national marrow donor program she found a perfect blood stem cell match in a man named Michael Mulvey. “Somehow I was chosen beyond the DNA that I have,” said Mulvey. Bishop Michael Mulvey had added his name to the ‘Be the Match’ registry years ago when he served as a pastor for a parish near Austin. “It was a jarring of the memory to be honest with you I had pretty much forgotten that I had signed up,” said Mulvey. But when he received the phone call, that would ultimately save a woman’s life, he says there was no hesitation, but rather an easy decision to give someone a second chance at life. “We do a lot for people, but this was something very person,” said Mulvey. “To think that someone somewhere in the world needed what I had I felt gratification that I could give something that was given to me to someone else.”Due to privacy laws, the mother's identity is not yet being revealed. But Bishop Mulvey says he hopes she's still fighting on, and he'll always feel connected to her, whoever she is.“I prayed for her the whole time and it was an amazing thing thinking that your blood is leaving you but it’s also coming back to you and to see that the life that could be given to another person,” said Mulvey. Every three minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer. ‘Be the Match’ helps connect people from all over the world by collecting just a cheek swab sample from people willing to help save a life, through either bone marrow or blood stem cell donations. A nurse who tested positive for COVID-19 says she’s getting better each day and expects to fully recover.Lisa Merck is not sure where she became infected with the virus but says symptoms started out very mild late last month."I started having just a little sniffling in my nose. It's almost like if you go outside and it's cold out and your nose just starts running a bit," Merck said in a video interview from her house.After a few days, in late February, the mild symptoms became worse.“Every time I stood up, I felt like I just kind of wanted to pass out. I got really tired,” she said.What surprised her is that after a few more days she started to feel better. She felt well enough to volunteer her time with a ski race in her small, central Colorado town. At one point, she went for a run with her husband.Doctors tested her for influenza and the results came back negative. Her health continued to improve, she said."I was feeling okay,” she said. “I watched my little nephew, and then around March 1st and 2nd, I started getting a fever. I started getting a little short of breath."This time, those symptoms persisted, and she eventually asked her husband to take her to the emergency room the second week of March. She tested positive for COVID-19. Merck provided a copy of her county health department notification, which requested she not have contact with members of the public while she recovers."I don't know where I got that kind of virus. That's the hard thing is not knowing I could have picked it up from a patient and I could have picked it up from a surface,” she said. “It could have been at an airport, on a place or a bus. I have no idea where I got it and that's the scary thing. And you know, especially since I am hyper vigilant about it, making sure my hands are clean and that I do the right thing.”Merck said she agreed to talk publicly, because she wants others to know what to watch for. She says she also wants the public to know that most people will beat the virus. "I'm feeling a lot better. I'm feeling more energetic. I did a little yoga this morning. I did some stretching," she said.She’s still staying away from other people as she recovers. 2193

A nearly 7-hour long standoff which began with six officers getting shot while serving a warrant has to an end late Wednesday evening, Philadelphia Police confirmed. As of early Thursday morning, a SWAT unit was in the process of clearing th scene.Police spokesman Eric Gripp said that the six officers were released from the hospital by late Wednesday evening. An officer who was injured in an accident while responding to the scene remains hospitalized. Gripp said that law enforcement attempted to make contact with the suspect who was barricaded throughout the evening. Officials from ATF confirmed were on the scene, assisting local police. Philadelphia Police requested the media not air live helicopter footage of the officers' tactical positions. Officers held those positions all evening despite spurts of gunfire.Ross told reporters that officers attempted to serve a warrant at a residence near Temple University around 4:30 p.m. Officers reached the kitchen of the residence when the suspect began shooting at officers. Ross said that officers dove through windows and took cover to avoid the gunfire. Following the shooting, officers retreated as dozens of other units responded. Temple University also was in a lockdown.Two officers who were trapped in the residence for several hours were freed, Gripp confirmed.
