SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota, which has seen an uptick in coronavirus infections in recent weeks, is bracing to host hundreds of thousands of bikers for the 80th edition of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.More than 250,000 people are expected to attend the Aug. 7 to Aug. 16 rally in western South Dakota, which could make it the biggest event anywhere since the coronavirus pandemic started. The event will offer businesses that depend on the rally a chance to make up losses after the downturn in tourism spending.City Manager Daniel Ainslie told ABC News that sales tax revenue from the rally brought the community million last year and the event generated about 5 million across South Dakota. But many of Sturgis' roughly 7,000 residents are leery about the brimming bars and bacchanalia coming their way and say it shouldn't go on during a pandemic. The age of the average rally participant is also concerning to some, with most motorcyclists part of an older demographic and more at risk of severe illness from the coronavirus.ABC obtained a statement from the Centers from Disease Control and Prevention that said large gatherings make it difficult to maintain social distancing guidelines, which may put attendees at risk of exposure to the virus.“Any identification of cases following a large gathering would not likely be confirmed until 2-3 weeks after the event," the statement says. 1413

Senator John McCain's daughter is asking people to "chill out," as she expressed frustration on the speculation about McCain's death and funeral. Returning from her family's Arizona ranch, Meghan McCain was back to work on ABC's "The View" with a message relating to her dad, who is undergoing treatment for an aggressive form of brain cancer."I'd like everybody to take a collective breath and chill out on my dad for a second, especially Orrin Hatch," Meghan McCain said. This week, reports surfaced with details of Sen. John McCain's final wishes, including that he may not want President Trump at his funeral. The most senior Republican in the Senate, Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, quipped the idea was "ridiculous," and he also predicted McCain would never return to the Senate.Meghan McCain is asking people to have "respect" for her family. "It's a process, as anyone knows if you know anybody that has cancer," she said. Friends and family are now explaining how Senator McCain is faring during his treatment."He's been doing what the doctors have asked of him to do and continues to fight a very tough battle," said Kurt Davis, a political campaign consultant and longtime friend.  "He's doing really good, making jokes, talking, standing, doing a great recovery he has a great team around him," Meghan McCain said.McCain is also receiving a steady stream of visitors.  Former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Arizona, were guests at the ranch in the past week."It's amazing to see, obviously, the impact he's had on so many people across the globe," Davis said. 1698

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (AP) -- Health officials have confirmed a case of plague at South Lake Tahoe -- the first in California in five years.El Dorado County officials said Monday the California Department of Public Health notified them of the positive test of a local resident who is under medical care while recovering at home.Plague bacteria are most often transmitted by fleas that have acquired it from infected squirrels, chipmunks and other wild rodents.Health officials believe the South Tahoe resident may have been bitten by an infected flea while walking a dog along the Truckee River corridor or in the Tahoe Keys area on Tahoe's south shore. 664

SIOUX FALLS, SD — New DNA technology has led to the arrest on Friday of a South Dakota woman who is being charged with murder for allegedly leaving her newborn in a ditch 38 years ago, according to police. On Feb. 28, 1981, a full-term baby boy was found in a blanket in the cold in Sioux Falls, police said. The baby had been born alive, but died from exposure to the elements, a coroner said, according to Sioux Falls police. No suspects or family members were identified, police said. A cemetery interred the baby and give him the name of Andrew John Doe, police said. After nearly four decades on Friday morning, the baby's mother, 57-year-old Theresa Bentaas, was arrested and accused of leaving the baby alive in the ditch, Sioux Falls police said at a news conference. She was charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter, police said. The baby's father was also interviewed, but not arrested because "it was determined that at that time they were young teenagers and he did not know," Sioux Falls police Detective Michael Webb said. The cold case first heated up 10 years ago as DNA technology advanced and investigators looked into obtaining DNA from the unidentified baby, Webb said.In 2009 the baby's body was exhumed and his DNA was put into databases, but over the years there were no matches, Webb said. Then in April 2018, Webb said the arrest of the suspected "Golden State Killer" piqued his interest. The alleged "Golden State Killer," a serial killer and rapist who terrorized California in the 1970s and 1980s, became the first person to be publicly arrested through genetic genealogy. Genetic genealogy takes an unknown suspect's DNA from a crime scene and identifies the suspect through his or her family members, who voluntarily submit their DNA to genealogy databases.Since April 2018, genetic genealogy has helped identify more than three dozen suspects, according to CeCe Moore, chief genetic genealogist for Parabon NanoLabs, which has worked on the majority of the cases, including Andrew John Doe.Parabon helped Sioux Falls investigators build a family tree based on the baby's DNA, and they combed through old birth and marriage announcements to help put the pieces together, Webb said.A possible match was found in February 2019. The suspect, Bentaas, still lived in Sioux Falls and police executed a search warrant to get her DNA, police said. DNA tests then confirmed Bentaas was the baby's mother, police said. The baby's father was also still living in Sioux Falls, Webb said."We did interview them last Wednesday on the anniversary that we believe the baby was put in the ditch, on Feb. 27," Webb said. "It was confirmed that the baby was theirs."Bentaas is scheduled to appear in court on March 11. Her public defender declined to comment to ABC News Friday."It was sheer determination and stubbornness coupled with science and DNA and genealogy that solved this," Webb said. "All these cold cases and these children, victims of homicides that are being solved nowadays, including the Golden State Killer...just keep pushing, because that new advancement is right around the corner. It's pretty amazing." 3181

SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) — Even though the tables and chairs are empty, the pit-masters at Cali Comfort BBQ are keeping busy. The kitchen and bar are filling takeout and delivery orders, thanks to increased online and phone sales."As restaurant owners, we can't discriminate how people eat our barbecue," says Owner Shawn Walchef. "If they want to order barbecue delivered to their office or the little league field, then they should be able to get that. They shouldn't have to come and wait in line."It's a new strategy Walchef is using during the pandemic, thanks to his partnership with Restaurant Solutions, a consulting firm that helps small restaurants analyze their financial prospects."What we've been doing is really focusing on doing break-even analysis with our clients," says Sydney Lynn, the Director of Planning Advisory Services with the company. She says restaurants need to focus on people's digital experience now more than ever, so restaurants can be profitable during and after the Pandemic."Restaurant entrepreneurs and owners are the most creative and innovative folks you'll know. So if anyone can pivot, it will be them," says Lynn.Restaurant Solutions has four strategies they say can help the restaurants turn a profit every day during the pandemic:1. Find your break-even point by learning how much money you can expect per customer.2. Analyze your budget and look for ways to cut. This could include layoffs.3. Adjust your menu to see if you need to increase prices or cut items to streamline the kitchen.4. Bring your brand into the digital space, emphasizing the customer experience on the website, app, and social media.Walchef says that means treating every customer online with the same hospitality you would if they came into the restaurant."It can't be a transaction. It has to be something where there's a heart," he says. "If there's nobody there, and your digital experience is just a fake facade, (a customer) might order a burger one time from a virtual restaurant. But if you don't know that there's an actual owner, that there are actual people there making this food, it's going to be very unlikely that you order from them again."Lynn says it's a challenge, but restaurant owners have faced other challenges in the past."If they go back and remember how they were able to make it through that first year of opening, they're going to be able to make it through this as well." 2428
