(KGTV) — One person is dead after being hit by a vehicle in Encinitas late Saturday.San Diego Sheriff's Department reported just after 8 p.m. the person was struck in the 2500 block of S. Coast Highway 101. The driver involved remained at the scene and deputies do not suspect alcohol or drugs to be a factor.A Sig Alert for S. Coast Highway 101 was issued as deputies investigated. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- San Diego County’s largest ice-skating facility is closing for good.Officials with Ice-Plex Escondido announced Thursday that the facility, located on 555 N. Tulip St., is shutting down effective immediately.Since 1995, Ice-Plex was a destination for San Diegans looking for a place to ice skate or play hockey. The facility, with its two Olympic-sized ice rinks, offered classes and public ice skating sessions that ran 7 days a week.In a statement on their website, Ice-Plex officials said, “This was not an easy decision. Our hockey and skating communities have been strong partners to us throughout the years, and we have worked hard over the last few months to find an alternative way to keep the facility open. Unfortunately, that solution has not emerged.”Officials said the facility has been operating “at a substantial loss” in the past few years, and they’ve struggled to maintain the equipment and other systems needed to keep the facility running.The pandemic-related closure also affected the facility’s ability to stay afloat, and despite numerous efforts, officials could not find ways to keep the Ice-Plex open.“We close our doors with a heavy heart and would like to extend our deepest thanks to our athletes, customers, staff and volunteers, who have been responsible for creating a welcome and competitive environment at Ice-Plex. Facebook is rolling out a series of changes to give people better control of their privacy settings and data.The company's redesigned security settings let people control what personal information the social network and third-party apps keeps. Facebook used to display security tools and settings across 20 different tabs."Last week showed how much more work we need to do to enforce our policies and help people understand how Facebook works and the choices they have over their data," Facebook wrote in a blog post.Facebook responded to the global outcry after an explosive report that a third-party personality quiz harvested 50 million Facebook profiles. Data company Cambridge Analytica used that information to sway the 2016 presidential election.The company is also adding two more tools, including a Privacy Shortcuts menu, where people can add two-factor authentication and control the ads they're served. Facebook's new "Access Your Information" button allows people to delete anything from their timelines or profiles that they no longer want on Facebook, the company says."It's also our responsibility to tell you how we collect and use your data in language that's detailed, but also easy to understand," Facebook concluded in the blog post. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man died after falling off a cliff in Escondido Thursday afternoon. Emergency crews were called to the 16000 block of Highland Valley Road late Thursday afternoon after reports of the man dangling more than 50 feet off the side of a cliff. The man was identified Friday as 75-year-old John David Bittner of Julian.Cal Fire says Bittner was working to replace batteries on wildlife cameras when the accident occurred. He was with a friend rappelling down a cliff in Brady Canyon with suffered a fall and yelled for help to his friend.RELATED: Local ill woman among those claiming they were misled by hydrogen water companyCrews were able to recover Bittner using a helicopter, but he enterted cardiopulmonary arrest and died at the scene, Cal Fire and the county Medical Examiner said.CalFire attempted to rescue a climber in remote Escondido who was replacing batteries on wildlife cameras. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - The oldest tree at North County’s San Diego Botanic Garden is finding new life as a work of art.The Eucalyptus cladocalyx was planted 100 years ago at the Encinitas garden. It had to be euthanized last year because it was leaning and posing a threat to visitors, officials said.Artist Erwin Young “Mitch” Mitchell IV took the 30-foot stump and transformed it into a replica of a baobab tree. He expects to be finished this week."The Garden is a wonderful place, not only to visit, but to create such a great endeavor there is fantastic - I appreciate the opportunity," said Mitchell. "It is the first time I have ever changed a tree into another tree.
