Three high school students in Martin County are recovering after investigators say they overdosed at two schools Tuesday and had to be hospitalized.The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said the students smoked THC vape pens that were laced with an unknown substance, possibly a narcotic.Now, investigators hope to determine how the students got their hands on the laced vape pens in the first place, whether they created the concoction themselves, or if they obtained the pens from a mutual source.Martin County Schools Superintendent Laurie Gaylord called parents Tuesday afternoon to warn them of the discovery of students using vape pens on school campuses. The message said in part, "The sheriff’s office believes there is a likelihood that more students may come to be in possession of the pens and may inhale or ingest the toxins in the future.”Just after noon on Tuesday, Lt. Ryan Grimsdale said deputies were notified that a female student at South Fork High School was having a medical emergency.“It was relayed to us that they were having a seizure," Grimsdale said.Within a couple hours of that call, Grimsdale said a female and a male student at Martin County High School also had medical issues, not as severe as the one reported at South Fork High School, but at least one of the students was also going in and out of consciousness.“The symptoms were similar, but not as severe. Upset stomach and things of that nature.”Grimsdale said this is the first time he has heard of the laced vape pens making their way into local schools.He says the issue as a whole of vape pens being used to ingest harmful or illegal substances is becoming a statewide issue.“What we’re looking at now actually statewide is an epidemic where these have become the primary method for consumption of illegal substances,” Grimsdale said. Miami is seeing the worst of it, according to Grimsdale.Martin County High School parent Deborah Pelletier was concerned after getting the call from the school.“We have to look out for each other. These are not good times,” said Pelletier.She said she will be taking the advice provided by the school.“We’re going to discuss it with my granddaughter here, I am also her guardian, and I’m not quite sure what to make of it yet.”Grimsdale also offers the following advice to parents: "Be involved. Pay attention. These vape pens, if you don’t know what they are look them up. Know what they look like and what to look for. Go through their book bags, look through their rooms to be actively involved, educated and informed. Pay attention.”"Kids are supposed to go to school and sitting in classrooms being educated and getting yelled at for running down the hallway. They’re not supposed to be getting transported out by ambulance because of a drug overdose,” Grimsdale said.The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said about 100 citations have been written for students who have brought vape pens to school this school year. TULSA, Oklahoma — The owner of a popular Tulsa bakery was arrested after she was accused of stealing baking products. Libby Morley, who also goes by Lauren Morley and Lauren Beesley, was taken to jail March 25 for felony larceny.She is accused of stealing about ,200 worth of butter, vanilla, chocolate chips and cream cheese from Sam's Club.An affidavit said on Nov. 2, an employee of Sam's club on 44th and Sheridan noticed Morley with 24 bottles of vanilla on her flatbed. The document said the employee noticed she was acting suspicious. After checking purchase history, the club reported to police they did not sell 24 bottles of vanilla that week. An internal investigation was launched within the store and found several other incidents where Morley did not pay, according to the affidavit. From Oct. 8 until Nov. 12, the store said she "did not make an effort to pay for the items and passed operational registers as the left the location." Throughout that period of time, the affidavit said she stole a total of 126 packages of butter, nine bags of chocolate chips, nine packages of cream cheese and 24 bottles of vanilla. Morley issued a statement through her public relations firm saying, "I deny the allegations against me. This is a misunderstanding. I'm working to clear my name." The Texas Department of State Health Services and Fort Bend County Health and Human Services are reporting the first positive test result for coronavirus in Texas outside of the passengers returned from Wuhan City or the Diamond Princess cruise ship. The DSHS says the patient is a resident of Fort Bend County and recently returned from travel abroad. The patient is currently isolated in the hospital. The test was performed at the public health lab in Houston and will be confirmed by testing at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. DSHS is supporting Fort Bend County in identifying any close contacts of the patient while he was sick so thaty can be isolated and monitored for symptoms and quickly tested, if needed. “Having a COVID-19 case in Texas is a significant development in this outbreak, but it doesn’t change the fact that the immediate risk to most Texans is low,” said Dr. John Hellerstedt, DSHS commissioner. “This travel-related case reinforces the fact that we should all be taking basic hygiene steps that are extremely effective in limiting limit the spread of COVID-19 and all respiratory illnesses.”DSHS says a travel-related case in Texas does not indicate spread within the state.Governor Abbott and the DSHS will hold a press conference Thursday on the state's testing capabilities for COVID-19. 1345
