Millions of people are still unemployed in the United States. On one hand, the unemployment rate has been going down since its peak in June. On the other hand, it’s still almost triple what it was before the pandemic.“I just never anticipated this is where we would be in September,” said Bridget Altenburg, president of the National Able Network. For 40 years, the National Able Network has been helping people find work. But in the past six months, it has been working overtime on that. The organization has been getting roughly 100 calls for employment help a day, serving more than 10,000 people since March.“It is scary for the people that we are talking to,” said Altenburg. “It’s scary for them because we thought it would be a month or two months of unemployment, and here we are, basically six months later, trying to help people navigate who’s hiring.”Altenburg has two key pieces of advice for anyone unemployed right now. One, she is emphatic that there are employers out there hiring.“There are employers that are desperate for people,” said Altenburg. “So, don’t immediately assume that there is nothing out there, so I might as well not look.”Secondly, Altenburg recommends anyone unemployed take a moment to figure out potential jobs in current high-demand fields and think creatively about how your current skill sets apply to those potential jobs.“Don’t sell yourself short in terms of what makes you uniquely qualified for that role,” she added. For example, you wouldn’t think of a restaurant worker having a unique skill set to be a good fit in the IT field, but the National Able Network has been training them to switch over and IT employers are flocking to recruit these workers.“People who have been servers intuitively know customer service in a way that I could never teach somebody that is in IT,” Altenburg explained. In addition to the National Able Network, there is also about 2,400 government-funded American Job Centers nationwide offering free career and job hunt services. In addition, most public libraries, even many community colleges, are offering free resume and some career services help as well.“At Lyft, when we think of the way we can make on communities, we think about how we can use transportation to do so,” said Lisa Boyd with Lyft. The ride-share company has even jumped in to help the millions on the job hunt. It is providing free rides, now in 20 cities, to people going to and from job interviews, job training, and even free rides to work until they get their first paycheck at their new job.The program started in 2019, but at the beginning of the pandemic, Lyft expanded it to help with the increased need.“We have a job access hub on our Lyft website,” said Boyd. “That will help you be able to go in and sign up on a form.”Anyone in need of the free ride while you job hunt or start a new job can go to Lyft's Job Access Page on its website. All you have to do is provide info on where you live, what kind of help you need, and the site will connect you with your local United Way or Goodwill. The two partner organizations actually distribute Lyft’s free rides, and they both offer additional free career services help. 3184

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A man was arrested Sunday after allegedly saying on Facebook live that he would shoot Louisville police officers for ,000.The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Kentucky said Sunday that 29-year-old Cortez Lamont Edwards was in possession of an AR variant pistol including a non-extendible support brace and extended magazine when he went live last Wednesday. In the video, Edwards says he’s requesting to be paid ,000 to shoot the officer on scene for a disturbance in the street in front of his home, according to a criminal complaint.Authorities say an investigation revealed that the Louisville man is a convicted felon, having been convicted of complicity to trafficking in a controlled substance, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.Edwards was taken into custody Sunday after a team of law enforcement agencies executed a search warrant at his home. He’s being charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. If convicted at trial, the maximum sentence for unlawfully possessing a firearm is 10 years in prison, a 0,000 fine, and three years of supervised release.Louisville has become a site of unrest this year, with people calling for justice in the Breonna Taylor case. The 26-year-old EMT was fatally shot by Louisville police in her apartment in March."Louisville needs healing and safety for its citizens, not armed felons seeking bids to shoot police," said U.S. Attorney Russell Coleman. "Federal law enforcement here will continue to respond as one to swiftly mitigate threats to our city." 1576

Microsoft and LinkedIn are working together to provide digital skills for 25 million people this year to get people back to work. The COVID-19 pandemic brought with it massive health, economic and unemployment crisis. It's a big job to get people a job, and Microsoft and LinkedIn are tackling it head-on.Naria Santa Lucia is Senior Director at Microsoft Philanthropies. She's helping to provide people with the skills they need to work in a digital economy."It's those individuals that are able to promote those skills that are in the best position now to receive a job and gain employment but also to recover faster in the aftermath of the COVID crisis," Santa Lucia said.To reach those 25 million people, Microsoft and LinkedIn have identified the skills employers are seeking now and in the future. Santa Lucia's job involves getting people the content they need, helping them obtain low-cost certifications and then making connections to employment."Once you have a skill, it's really important to signal and show you're learning to employers that are looking to hire," she said. "A really critical piece is making that move into finding a job."The program also teaches people how to work online, how to successfully communicate and how to work as the team. It's open to anybody.Microsoft and LinkedIn have identified 10 in-demand job fields: software developer, sales development rep, project manager, customer service specialist, digital marketer, IT support, network administrator, data analyst, financial analyst and graphic designer. The companies have curated "learning paths" or courses for all 10 job fields. To take a course, click here."Once that learning path is completed, it automatically goes on to your LinkedIn profile showing you've completed that certification, and then employers can see that," Santa Lucia said.Microsoft is also giving away million in grants to non-profits that help people who live in underserved and underrepresented communities. million of those grants will go to 50 organizations that serve communities of color."It's women, it's people of color, younger people right out of college — we want to make sure they have the support to take advantage of the content and some of the other programs that they have available so they can get a job," Santa Lucia said.Among the organizations working with Microsoft is the Public Library Association. Ramiro Salazar, the former president of the organization and the director of the San Antonio Public Library, says the grant could help libraries further serve the public."(The funds could be used) to provide equipment and connectivity to a service provider — WiFi nodes, for example — to offer WiFi within the library," Salazar said. "It's possible the rural library may work with another local entity to accomplish that."Many people across the country depend on the services that libraries provide — services that disappeared when COVID-19 sent the country into lockdown. Without access to a public library, many immediately lost their most reliable source of internet access."It emphasized the importance of public libraries, especially what Congress has recognized as the digital divide," Salazar said. "There's a more serious conversation going on about connectivity. Access to the internet should be like any other activity — like water and gas and electricity."The Public Library Association is doing research now on which areas need the most help. With the new partnership, they're hoping to get more resources up and running by early fall and into 2021."There is a lot of challenge right now that we face, but there's also a ton of opportunity," Santa Lucia said. "So if we can do this right and make sure we focus on the skills that are in demand and help people learn those skills and get a foothold in a positive step, we can have an inclusive economic recovery that's different than what we've had before.", 3918
