NPR's senior vice president of news Michael Oreskes stepped down on Wednesday amid allegations of sexual harassment in his past.NPR CEO Jarl Mohn said he asked Oreskes "for his resignation because of inappropriate behavior."Oreskes admitted to wrongdoing in an internal memo obtained by CNN."I am deeply sorry to the people I hurt. (KGTV) - An Oceanside man returned home to an unwelcome sight: a gay slur spray-painted across his garage door.Amid the tranquility of the Oceana South senior community, something ugly happened."I didn't expect this ... it hurts a lot," said Earls, choking back tears.For Earls, his emotions have been hard to control since he returned home on Pear Blossom Avenue past 7 p.m. Sunday. That's when he discovered a gay slur in black spray paint. Earls is openly gay."I just don't understand why people are so cruel. It just took me back to my childhood and the bullies on the playground," said Earls.The discovery was not a complete surprise. In the past few months, Earls says several neighbors have directed the same gay slur at him while walking near his home."One neighbor was muttering it quietly as she walks by. Another neighbor was the same person I saw near the garage when I discovered the slur," said Earls.Amid all the pain, something remarkable happened. After police arrived, a stranger came up to him."A man handed me an envelope, hugged me and said he loved me ... Inside was 0 and a note asking the money to be used for a reward. Shows there are good people. I have a lot of great neighbors," said Earls.Earls has told police about which neighbors have used the slurs before. Organizations across the country are working hard to ensure underserved communities have the medical services they need to keep them healthy this flu season.Health experts say the flu vaccine can help prevent further COVID-19 complications, leading to a major effort to expand treatment, testing and vaccine availability for low income communities. "We've taken the results of our efforts and we are working with clinicians and community leaders and patient and provider organizations to educate, to promote strategies for increasing flu vaccination by providers," said Dr. Laura Lee Hall, the President of the Center for Sustainable Healthcare Quality and Equity, which is part of the National Minority Quality Forum. She and other experts have been working over the last two years to come up with a better way to promote flu vaccination in communities of color."We should enhance efforts for flu vaccination so as to minimize the risk of serious respiratory illnesses in the population and the toll it can take in the healthcare system. We all know that COVID has disproportionately impacted people of color so they may be even at increased risk," said Dr. Hall. The group is hoping to boost flu vaccinations up to 40%.Emergency physician Dr. Kenny Banh, who is also the Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education at UCSF-Fresno, has been leading the university's mobile health and learning unit in Fresno, CA. This year, they're using million in Cares Act funds to expand COVID-19 testing and healthcare to underserved areas, in particular, communities of color."Besides the fact that it's the feel good and they deserve it and I believe everyone deserves a right to healthcare, but the reality is, it's very hard to understand for a lot of people where they're coming from. A lot of them are disenfranchised," said Dr. Banh.Dr. Banh says just opening up a clinic with free testing in an underserved community doesn't mean local people there will use it. He says many are fearful of physicians who don't speak their language or don't look like them. They can be worried about what testing implies. Hence, the major effort to serve and educate from all aspects."We offer free COVID testing but also we offer free contact tracing and social support services and other preventive health. Meaning, we’re giving out flu shots, we're doing HIV tests. We also concede for your general medical care, blood pressure, diabetes free of cost, no charges for anyone that walks through the door," said Dr. Banh.Dr. Banh adds, they have several clinics across different communities in Fresno, hoping to ultimately test 8,000 people for COVID by the end of 2020. OCEANSIDE (KGTV) -- Multiple customers said a North County rental company refused refunds during the pandemic and only offered a full credit toward a future stay in exchange for removing negative reviews online.Lisa Janson is one of those customers. She lives in Pennsylvania and was excited for her March trip to California with college friends. Janson was first planning to stop in Palm Springs to spend time with her son and his family before driving to Oceanside.Once in San Diego County, they planned to stay at a property managed by Beachfront Only. The company operates several rental properties along the coastline.As the situation with the Coronavirus worsened, Janson canceled their March trip. They were able to get refunds on their flight and Airbnb in Palm Springs; however, she said when it came to their rental, Janson said the business did not budge. "I was just absolutely shocked. I was dumbfounded," Janson said.She first asked for a refund on March 10. She said all those traveling were older than 65-years-old. One of her friends also had a doctor's note, urging her not to travel because of her compromised immune status. Even with that information, Janson said Beachfront Only would not make any exceptions.She lost more than ,000. Others contacted Team 10 about similar experiences with Beachfront Only. One San Diego man said he lost more than ,500. Another woman said she had to cancel her wedding due to the pandemic. Beachfront Only was the only business not to issue a refund. She lost more than ,000.A week and a half after Janson first reached out to Beachfront Only, she said the company offered her a deal."We're going to offer you a 50 percent credit toward a future rental," Janson said. "This was probably our 10th email back and forth. The idea of renting with them…. I don't trust these people!"On April 6, Janson said the company decided to offer 100 percent full credit towards a future stay contingent upon removal of any negative reviews that may have been posted, and the bank dispute has been canceled." "It just pisses me off," Janson said.When you visit Beachfront Only's Yelp page, a "consumer alert" warning pops up saying Yelp "caught someone red-handed, trying to pay someone to write, change, prevent, or remove a review for this business." Team 10 spoke to three people who said Beachfront Only offered 100 percent credit on a future stay only if they removed a negative review.Legal analyst Dan Eaton said a business compensating someone to remove a negative review is not illegal, but could have long-term effects."Businesses should understand that what they do will have a reputational tail that lasts many months, maybe years beyond the pandemic. People are going to remember what businesses have done," Eaton said.Beachfront Only did not respond to Team 10's calls and multiple emails. "I'm not wishing anything bad on them. On Monday morning, Pfizer announced that so far in Phase 3 trials, its COVID-19 vaccine candidate has been 90% effective in promoting protection against the virus. And while the announcement has many Americans seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, the pandemic is still far from over.Pfizer's announcement on Monday is an encouraging sign, as it means that the company is on track to file for Emergency Use Authorization for the vaccine in the coming weeks. It also keeps the U.S. on a timeline to have at least one vaccine approved and available for distribution by the end of 2021.But Monday's announcement does not mean a vaccine is imminent. Pfizer is currently mass-manufacturing its vaccine candidate in the event it does receive Emergency Use Authorization from the FDA, and hopes to have 100 million doses of the vaccine ready to ship by year's end. But even if Pfizer is able to fulfill that ambitious order by Dec. 31, it would only be able to vaccinate about one-third of everyone in the county.Once the initial vaccine order has been completed, it will need to be rationed for those who need it most — likely health care workers, essential employees and people in high-risk populations. While it is unclear who exactly will be eligible to receive the vaccine first, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) says the early distribution of a COVID-19 vaccine will be "constrained tightly" and will be "highly targeted" to "achieve coverage in priority populations."Eventually, the U.S. hopes to grant emergency use authorization to several vaccine candidates — many of which are currently in production on orders from the U.S. government.
