BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhua) -- China's largest gold producer said on Tuesday its operating profits rose by three fold to 1.55 billion yuan (228.09 million U.S. dollars) in the first six months this year.China National Gold Group Corp. said in a statement that its first-half revenue grew by 98 percent from a year earlier to 27.67 billion yuan and expected its full-year revenue to reach 50 billion yuan.At the end of June, the gold producer had 1,250 tonnes of gold reserves, eight million tonnes of copper reserves and 1.6 million tonnes of molybdenum, according to the statement.In the first half of 2010, the company added a total of 24.7 tonnes of gold, 683,000 tonnes of copper and 445,000 tonnes of molybdenum to its reserves, said the statement.The company had improved its development strategies through conducting merge and acquisitions, integrating regional resources and exploring overseas, said Sun Zhaoxue, general manager of the gold producer.
SHENYANG, July 22 (Xinhua) -- China mobilized helicopters for the first time in a highway medical rescue drill in northeast China' s Liaoning Province, the provincial bureau of transport said Thursday.The rescue drill took place at 10 a.m. on the Shenyang-Dalian highway where a bridge collapse and traffic pile-up purportedly injuring dozens was simulated.Two helicopters, an S-76 from China' s Ministry of Transport and an Mi-17 from Shenyang Military Command, were dispatched to rescue those acting as wounded in the blocked section inaccessible to rescue vehicles.The rescue workers were airlifted to the crash site and successfully extricated two "trapped" bus passengers within three minutes before transporting them to nearby hospitals.More than 300 people participated in the drill organized by China' s Ministry of Transport and the provincial government of Liaoning.
BEIJING, July 29 (Xinhua) - As China's urban population reached 46 percent of the total population last year, Chinese urban dwellers became the largest such population in the world, according to a 'blue paper' released on Thursday.By the end of 2009, China's urban population reached 620 million as both the annual birth rate and the total urban population became the world' s largest, according to "City' s Blue Book: China's Urban Development Report No. 3," which has been released by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Social Sciences Academic Press.It said China's urban population is twice that of the population of the United States and one quarter more than the total population of 27 countries of the European Union.By 2015, urban residents in China will make up about 52 percent, and by 2030, 65 percent of the total population in the country, it said."A milestone change for urban development will take place when urban people make up more than 50 percent of the population and thus surpass the number of rural people," the paper said."The 50-percent point phenomenon will occur in the mid-12th Development Program period (2011-2015) when both the number of urban and rural Chinese will reach 680 million," it said.The role of the urban economy will be further strengthened by that time, it said, adding that the urban economy would continue to drive the domestic demand.
