Researchers from the British Psychological Society released a report last week challenging stereotypes on why people are obese. The report states that "obesity is not simply down to an individual’s lack of willpower." The report claims there are a number of circumstances, some of which beyond a person's control, for becoming obese. "The people who are most likely to be an unhealthy weight are those who have a high genetic risk of developing obesity and whose lives are also shaped by work, school and social environments that promote overeating and inactivity," the BPS report says. "People who live in deprived areas often experience high levels of stress, including major life challenges and trauma, often their neighborhoods offer few opportunities and incentives for physical activity and options for accessing affordable healthy food are limited.""Research evidence points strongly to genes being a major part of the explanation for why some people are more susceptible to becoming obese than others," the BPS report continues.The report comes as 40 percent of American adults are considered obese, according to CDC figures.Fat shaming does not workThree weeks ago, late night comedian Bill Maher gave a controversial dialog on obesity, which he admitted was "fat shaming." "Fat shaming doesn’t need to end it needs to make a comeback," he said. Maher added, "Being fat isn’t a birth defect. Nobody comes out of the womb needing to buy two seats on the airplane. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A high school football player in St. Petersburg, Florida, is brain dead after collapsing during Friday night's game, according to the teen's mother.After a group tackle, 17-year-old Jacquez Welch of Northeast High School never stood back up. Paramedics rushed Welch to Bayfront Hospital where doctors discovered a pre-existing brain condition that no one knew about. They say Jacquez was born with arteriovenous malformation, also known as AVM. It's an abnormal connection between the arteries and veins in the brain. Marcia Nelson, his mother, was in the stands when it happened. She said in a press conference Monday that her son is brain dead and his collapse had nothing to do with the sport."I don't want anybody to be scared of sports," Nelson said. "It just happened to him at an early age, doing what he loved to do."Nelson said the family is working on making her son an organ donor to seven people. The family plans to take Jacquez off life support Monday night after an honor walk at 10 p.m. at Bayfront Hospital. "I am content. This is not anything I could control," Nelson said calmly. Nelson said Jacquez was a giving person and he would be proud that his organs will be used to save other lives. Nelson says football was his passion. Prosecutors say a 16-year-old student mistakenly shot his friend in their Houston-area high school’s ROTC room before fleeing and being arrested several hours later. Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said Wednesday that based on evidence gathered so far, the Tuesday afternoon shooting at Bellaire High School was not intentional. She says both students were part of the school's ROTC program. The alleged shooter has been charged as a minor with manslaughter. 478

Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Fla., and Rep. Ben McAdams, D-Utah, announced on Wednesday they have tested positive for coronavirus. Diaz-Balart was the first sitting member of Congress to announce a positive coronavirus test. McAdams' announcement came hours laterDiaz-Balart and McAdams participated in votes on Friday, including one to extend sick leave and unemployment benefits to some American workers amid the spread of the virus. Diaz-Balart remains in D.C. under a self-quarantine, and is not planning on returning to Florida during his quarantine. "I want everyone to know that I am feeling much better," Diaz-Balart said. "However, it is important that everyone take this extremely seriously and follow CDC guidelines in order to avoid getting sick and mitigate the spread of this virus. "On Saturday evening, after returning from Washington, D.C., I developed mild cold-like symptoms," McAdams said. "In consultation with my doctor on Sunday, I immediately isolated myself in my home. I have been conducting all meetings by telephone. My symptoms got worse and I developed a fever, a dry cough and labored breathing and I remained self-quarantined. "On Tuesday, my doctor instructed me to get tested for COVID-19 and following his referral, I went to the local testing clinic for the test. Today, I learned that I tested positive. I am still working for Utah's and pursuing efforts to get Utah's the resources they need as I continue doing my job from home until I know it is safe to end my self-quarantine." 1670
