BEIJING, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao called on diplomats to play a bigger role in serving the country's reform and national interests as China is seeking a stable and rapid development amid global economic downturn.     "China is at a crucial moment in dealing with the financial crisis and maintaining rapid economic development ... diplomacy must better serve the overall situation of reform, development and stability," said Hu while addressing a national meeting attended by diplomatic envoys, which ended Monday in Beijing. It should focus on the task of ensuring growth, people's life and stability," He said.     Hu urged Chinese envoys to join the global efforts for promoting economic growth, safeguard national sovereignty and security, firmly follow the one-China policy and maintain stability.     China will stick to the independent foreign policy of peace, pursue the path of peaceful development and develop friendly cooperation with all the countries in line with the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence, Hu said.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao also addressed the meeting, saying "the recovery of the global economy will be a slow process with twists and turns, there must be a long-term preparedness to effectively deal with (the global downturn)".     The global financial crisis has plunged the world into deep recession, and it's difficult to say the global downturn has reached the bottom, Wen said.

BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chairman Ning Gaoning of China National Cereals, Oils & Foodstuffs Corporation (COFCO), said Sunday the corporation's total investment in the northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region would reach 10 billion yuan (1.46 billion U.S. dollars) over the next five years.     Ning made the remarks during his visit to the Xinjiang-based subsidiary companies of the corporation, the country's largest oil and food producer.     Currently, COFCO's accumulative investment in the region is about 5 billion yuan, focused on tomato processing, sugar manufacturing, and beverages.     Ning said the corporation would double investment over the next five years due to confidence in the region's growth potential, but did not say for which the future investment would be targeted.     In 2005, COFCO made an investment in Xinjiang's Tunhe Investment Co., Ltd. by taking over a 37.2 percent share of Tunhe. So far COFCO Tunhe has become the largest tomato ketchup producer in Asia, and the second largest in the world.

BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- A grand evening gala to celebrate New China's 60th founding anniversary started Thursday evening at the Tian'anmen Square when 60 birthday-candle-shaped fireworks exploded into the sky and lit up the vast square. Red, pink, white and orange fireworks shot up into the night sky, lighting up the Tian'anmen Rostrum and 56 giant decorative columns, which were set up on the square to represent China's 56 ethnic groups. Fireworks are seen in the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, on the Tian'anmen Square in Beijing, capital of China, Oct. 1, 2009    That was the beginning of a 33-minute fireworks feast in the evening. NANJING, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Liu Yunshan, head of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, has called on authorities at various levels to step up patriotic education in the run-up to celebrating the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.     Liu, also a member of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, made the remarks during a recent inspection tour in the eastern province of Jiangsu.     Liu said patriotic education should serve the development and stability of China's reform, and should be included in the process of tackling the global financial crisis, and maintaining the country's steady and relatively fast economic development.     He urged the authorities to incorporate patriotic education into the daily life of the Chinese people, to "turn their love for the country into concrete actions."     Patriotic education should focus on China's youths and teenagers, Liu said, adding that the development of "red tourism", which mainly consists of visiting sites related to the history of the CPC and its armed forces, should also be highlighted.
