BALTIMORE, Md. – In the Matthew Henson community of Baltimore, Dr. Marvin “Doc” Cheatham knows the neighborhood’s numbers. “These are rowhouses. 40 or 50 of them in a block,” he said, “1,200 houses; total 363 vacant or boarded up houses. It’s awful.” His Baltimore neighborhood is no stranger to challenges. “It’s tough. Very poor. High crime. High dropout rate. Open air drug markets,” Dr. Cheatham said. McKean Park, though, may be the start of something new. The abandoned homes that once sat there are now gone – and have a new purpose. “We take it, we clean it up and we give it new life,” said Max Pollock with Brick and Board, a place where old wood finds new life. They are just one of several groups involved in the “Baltimore Wood Project.” “They came from a really, really old structure,” Pollock said, as he showed off a 200-year-old piece of lumber. The idea works like this: before an abandoned building is torn down, crews salvage all the materials they can get from it – like wood – and keep it out of landfills. At the same time, they give the people who live in those neighborhoods the job of doing that. “It gives you a new sense of your community,” said Baltimore native Kobe Bland, who works at Brick and Board. “You start to view your community a little different because you see the potential of what could be.” What started out as the “Baltimore Wood Project,” though, is now evolving into the “Urban Wood Project,” with the hope it could be replicated in other cities.” In just four years, they’ve salvaged one million square feet of wood. The USDA Forest Service is spearheading the project and the work to expand it. “This is wood for example locked up in these vacant and abandoned rowhomes that would otherwise be wasted – sent to the landfill or otherwise wasted – and we see the potential to capture and reuse that wood for a greater good,” said Sarah Hines of the USDA Forest Service, who has worked on the project in Baltimore. Back in his neighborhood, Doc Cheatham said he’s seen what kind of change it can bring. “It brings hope,” he said.It’s a hope that comes from salvaging the past, to try and build a better future. 2171

The owner of Nighttown in Cleveland shared the generous gift one customer left them Sunday, expressing gratitude for the random act of kindness.“We've actually had a really, really good summer. People have supported us unbelievably,” Nighttown owner Brendan Ring said. “That's what made it even more difficult for me to make the decision to hit the pause button here again until the complications are sort of under control.”Nighttown closed Sunday, voluntarily shutting down in response to the rising COVID-19 cases in the area and will remain closed until sometime in the spring, according to Ring.“It's going to be a hard winter in the restaurant business,” Ring said.Just before the restaurant closed Sunday, a customer dining with his family approached the bar and ordered a single beer.“He literally took two small sips out of it, signed his check and left,” bartender Heather Sandow said.After signing his check, the man handed his credit card receipt to Ring on his way out.“He put it down next to me and he wished me well and said, 'Share this with your staff,'” Ring said.Ring quickly noticed the tip amount.“I quickly glanced down and it looked like a 0 tip. And I go, ‘Wow, that's a nice tip for a guy that just had a beer,’” Ring said. “Then I put my reading glasses on. My eyes almost popped out of my head.”The generous customer left a ,000 tip on the single beer purchase. For those curious, that is a 42,735% tip.“One girl point blank didn't believe what she was staring at,” Ring said. “She said, ‘No, that's not real.’”Ring said he ran after the man, thinking there had been a mistake. The man confirmed the tip was intentional.“That gentleman that left a tip yesterday, he’d be indicative of the type of customer we have here in Cleveland Heights. Just true, loyal and giving,” Ring said.Sandow said the relationship between customers and staff for the last 25 years is what sets Nighttown apart.“It's not all about money. I think personally, it's more about the gesture that was made and the unselfishness that was demonstrated,” Sandow said. “The customers have been coming here over the years. They do care about us.”As Ring temporarily closed the doors to his business and is now planning for the future, he said he will reflect on the parting words of the kind customer.“We'll be back. Peak flu season is starting now, and doctors say to get ready for a potentially extended season. This year’s flu season has been rough, with the CDC reporting the flu is widespread in 24 states, with 19 states reporting high levels of flu activity. That's more than double the activity of the previous week. A total of 13 children have died so far this flu season. Doctors say it could get worse. “Flu activity has taken off our projection is that it's going to continue to increase, probably for the next few months,” says Dr. Andrew Walshak with Presbyterian/ St. Luke’s Medical Center. Dr. Walshak says he expects to see more flu cases around the country. “The graph of flu activity in our hospital is just increasing,” he explains. “It's just a slow upward, so we're only at the beginning of flu season right now.” Everyone is at risk: your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. “It can really affect the lungs and affect our ability to get oxygen in our bodies, and that's what primarily the fatalities have been caused by his severe breathing problems,” he says. Dr. Walshak says it's not too late to get the flu shot. It is with great sadness that I post about the passing of Nikita Waligwa, the sweet, warm, talented girl whom I worked with on the film, Queen Of Katwe. She played Gloria with such vibrancy. In her real life she had the enormous challenge of battling brain cancer. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and community as they come to terms with having to say goodbye so soon. Michigan's new cyberbullying law will go into effect on March 27. Public Act 457 of 2018, sponsored by Rep. Pete Lucido (R-Shelby Township), formally defines cyberbullying as a misdemeanor. It states that cyberbullying is a crime punishable by 93 days in jail or a fine of up to 0. In addition, a person who engages in a continued pattern of harassing or intimidating behavior and causes serious injury to the victim is guilty of a felony punishable by up to five years and a ,000 fine. A "pattern of repeated harassment" is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a ,000 fine. The pattern means a a series of two or more separate noncontinuous acts of harassing or intimidating behavior.
