This incident in New York comes about a month after synthetic marijuana was linked to 153 people falling ill and the deaths of four people across Chicago and areas in central Illinois. The synthetic cannabinoids were found to contain rat poison and most of the hospitalizations were related to unexplained bleeding, such as coughing up blood, blood in the urine, bloody nose and bleeding gums.Last year, 102 people in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, overdosed on synthetic marijuana within three days. None of those cases was fatal. There was also a 2016 incident in Brooklyn where 33 people were hospitalized after overdosing on synthetic marijuana over an 11-hour period. Patients suffered respiratory problems and possible altered mental states, a fire department spokesman said at the time. 813

to wipe out debts of front-line workers. “It was literally thousands of dollars that I went into debt,” said nurse and mother of two, Vanessa Matos.Matos had a surgery nearly 10 years ago. “It was a surgery that had many, many complications,” said Matos. She was in and out of the hospital several times over the next five years, and even with insurance, “they had to send me to a different hospital in Boston because of the complications I was having, and it was part of their network, but none of it was covered,” she said. For years, she’s been working to pay off the thousands of dollars in medical debt, some of it from the very hospital she worked at. “I can say I feel shame, like, ‘Oh my God, I work so hard and do so much to make sure my bills are paid on time,’ but the medical debt is the one I thought about,” Matos said. With student loans, mortgage payments, and young children, her medical debt became a constant burden. “Getting those letters and those calls, it’s humiliating and it’s very stressful,” she said. The pandemic only making the stress worse as Matos found herself on the frontlines: at high risk for infection and another hospital bill. “To be carrying that burden, especially when you’re treating COVID patients, like, ‘What if I catch it?’ I know how much one trip to the ER costs,” she said. Matos received a letter just a few weeks ago. A message of relief from a nonprofit called RIP Medical Debt. Her remaining medical debt was paid in full. “It was very overwhelming, and I was really, really grateful thinking, ‘Wow this is really a blessing for sure,’” she said.Craig Antico, CEO of the organization, said the company is able to buy medical debt from hospitals at a fraction of the cost of the debt, all through donations. “We’re able to buy about 0 for every one-dollar donation, so it’s pretty impactful,” he said. The company created a 1882

This isn't the first time a region of the United States has seen an outbreak of health problems tied to synthetic cannabinoids.Last year, 102 people in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, overdosed on synthetic marijuana within three days. None of those cases was fatal. In 2016, 33 people in Brooklyn were made ill from suspected overdoses of synthetic pot.The number of acute poisonings from synthetic cannabinoids rose sharply between 2010 and 2015, according to a Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report published by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2016.During that time, physicians treated 456 patients total for synthetic cannabinoid intoxications.Synthetic cannabinoids, or fake weed, are human-made chemicals that can be sprinkled on dried, shredded plant material and smoked, or can be consumed as vaporized liquids inhaled through an e-cigarette or other device. These mind-altering chemicals are called cannabinoids, since they are similar to the chemicals found in marijuana, though they can cause serious side effects that are different from those of marijuana. One study of a synthetic cannabinoid found that it was 85 times as potent as tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the mind-altering chemical in marijuana. That study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2016.People who smoke synthetic cannabinoids can have rapid heart rate, vomiting, agitation, confusion and hallucinations, according to the CDC.In the past few years, doctors have become familiar with the health outcomes people can face when they are exposed to synthetic cannabinoids, said Dr. Patrick Lank, an emergency physician and assistant professor of emergency medicine at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Illinois."They include things like seizures, heart attack, kidney failure," said Lank, who was not involved in the recent synthetic cannabinoid cases."What's happening in Illinois is different, and these are bleeding complications. Why they're happening? We're still uncertain," he said. "We don't know if the supply of synthetic cannabinoids in Illinois and the Chicago area have been tainted by someone with brodifacoum, or rat poison. Or if this is potentially a new side effect of a new synthetic cannabinoid." 2256

To the Philly District Attorney’s office, I’m grateful for your commitment to justice. I understand that many people of color across the country don’t have that luxury and I plan to use my platform to shine a light on those issues.— Meek Mill (@MeekMill) April 24, 2018 269
