LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The U.S. Justice Department in Los Angeles announced today that it has obtained an additional .4 million for servicemembers whose vehicles were repossessed by Wells Fargo Bank in violation of federal law.Wells Fargo reached a million settlement with federal prosecutors last year over allegations it illegally repossessed more than 400 cars owned by members of the military without a court order.The settlement resolves alleged violations of the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, which protects service members against certain civil proceedings that could affect their legal rights while they are in the service.The additional amount brings the total compensation under the settlement to more than .1 million and the total number of servicemembers eligible for relief to more than 860."The SCRA provides important protections and is intended to prevent unnecessary financial hardship for the brave women and men who serve in our armed forces," said acting U.S. Attorney Sandra R. Brown."Losing an automobile through an unlawful repossession while serving our country is a problem servicemembers should not have to confront. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - On the heels of two highly publicized parties, one of which ended in a fatal shooting, Los Angeles County's public health director warned again Wednesday that such gatherings are forbidden under coronavirus-prevention orders, and attending them endangers the public at large.Barbara Ferrer, director of the county Department of Public Health, said infection rates among residents aged 30 to 49 nearly tripled between June and late July, and rates among those 18-29 quadrupled."These two age groups continue to drive new infections here in the county," Ferrer said.She said people in the 18-29 age group now represent twice the percentage of hospitalized COVID-19 patients in the county than they did in April, matching the rate of people aged 80 and over. People aged 30-49 now represent 25% of all hospitalized virus patients.She said the county has reported hundreds of deaths among younger age groups, but noted that younger people who become infected but don't become severely ill can still pass the virus to older residents who might require hospitalization or even die.Without specifically referencing any particular gathering, Ferrer acknowledged recent widely publicized parties that made headlines, calling such massive collections of people a "bad idea" and a breeding ground for the virus among younger residents who can in turn infect older and more vulnerable residents. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - In a tearful news conference, the Riverside couple wounded when an off-duty Los Angeles police officer fatally shot their developmentally disabled son during what the lawman contends was an act of self- defense at a Costco in Corona decried the shooting Monday and said they presented no danger to the officer. ``I begged and told him not to shoot,'' Russell French told reporters at the Ayres Hotel in Corona. ``I said we have no guns and my son is sick. He still shot.'' Russell and Paola French's son, 32-year-old Kenneth French, was killed when Los Angeles Police Department Officer Salvador Sanchez opened fire the afternoon of June 14 inside the Costco store after what the officer's attorney has described as a life-threatening assault by Kenneth. Sanchez, a Southwest Division patrol officer who has been with the police department since May 2012, is on paid administrative leave. Dale Galipo, attorney for the French family, again insisted the shooting was not only unwarranted, but ``one of the most egregious shootings I have seen.'' Galipo said he filed a damages claim Monday against the LAPD and the city of Los Angeles, a precursor to a lawsuit. He did not specify a damages amount being sought. Kenneth French's parents suffered gunshot wounds to the back when the lawman opened fire, according to Galipo, who said earlier the injuries confirm ``that they were not facing in Officer Sanchez's direction at the time they were shot.''
