BRANSON, Mo. – Tourist destinations across America have a busy season and an off-season. During the off-season, the economy tends to slow down. That holds true for a couple months each year in Branson, Missouri – a place known as a family-friendly town usually filled with visitors in the parks, lakes, and shops. “We are at about a six week standstill after the first of the year,” said Lynn Berry with the Branson Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau. The rest of the time, Branson welcomes 9 million visitors a year. When the town’s busy season slows down, nonprofit Christian Action Ministries speeds up. “Right now is the height of our season at Christian Action Ministries and dealing with food insecurity,” said Kevin Huddleston, the executive director with Christian Action Ministries.The organization helps feed the community. “Primarily to help people get through the off-season months,” he said. Huddleston said during the summer they see around 100 households a day. During this time of the year, that number is about 150. The population of Branson floats around 12,000 people for perspective. Each day, people line up before the doors open.“If it wasn’t for places like this, I’d go hungry most of the time,” Art said. Art is one of the people who came down to get food, something people can do once a month from this nonprofit. The process starts with some basic questions about your job, household and cooking abilities. Then they are allowed to pick two breads while the volunteers pack a larger bag accordingly.“Most of the people you see here wouldn’t eat if it wasn’t for places like this,” Art said. Art currently lives out of his car. “Construction or I work in restaurants, I’ll wash dishes, you know anything. Usually in the summer I try to work two jobs so I can save up for the time off,” he said. “Most tourism jobs are more of an entry-level position, a lot of them are part-time,” Huddleston said. “These jobs really aren’t intended for family breadwinners.” This is a situation Branson and other tourism-focused towns face.“Branson is kind of a perfect storm of tourism and poverty,” said Bryan Stallings, the executive director at Elevate Branson. The nonprofit helps people learn job skills. “Low paying wages, seasonal unemployment, no transportation system and no affordable housing,” Stallings explained. “It’s kind of created this perfect storm for poverty.” As people with low incomes looked to find other places to live, weekly rate motels flourished. But recently, there’s been trouble there too.“Over 40 of these motels we’ve seen about 16 of them close,” Stallings said. “Which is putting a squeeze on places to live for folks.” He said the town is 1,300 units short on affordable housing units. “One of the things we are trying to work with particularly is moving people out of hotel and motel rooms that have been serving as their apartment,” Lynn Berry said. She said while she sees a lot of people draw unemployment this time of year, Branson is doing better. “Truly back in the day, you could shoot a cannon down Main Street after October 31, and not hit anyone until about April 1,” she said. Local restaurants like Big D’s BBQ have come up with solutions to help maintain business in the winter. “We do [pull] back our schedule to some extent, we do close one day of the week here in the restaurant,” said Dana Peterson, the owner Big D’s BBQ. They feed up to a couple thousand people a day in the summer. During the winter, that number is in the hundreds. “It’s our core group of people that maintain the full employment, not our seasonal help when staff is at full capacity,” he said.Lynn said they’ve brought in more museums and other activities to do in town during bad weather or the parks off seasons, to help create more interest in coming to Branson during the winter. “Museums were probably the biggest hit for us,” she said.Branson continues to look for ways to make the town more year round, and keep people working. “It’s going to take all of us working together in our community to solve some of these issues,” Stallings said. 4120

LACKLAND AFB, Texas – The Centers for Disease Control has now confirmed a 15th case of the new coronavirus, officially named COVID-19, in the United States. Thursday, the CDC said the new patient was among a group of people under federal quarantine at JBSA-Lackland in Texas who recently returned to the U.S. from China on a State Department-chartered flight that arrived on Feb. 7. This is the first person under quarantine at JBSA-Lackland who had symptoms and tested positive for COVID-19, according to the CDC. The new patient is currently isolated and receiving medical care at a designated hospital nearby. This isn't the first case of an evacuee being diagnosed with COVID-19. The 13th and 14th cases of the virus were found among evacuees who were flown last week from Wuhan to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in Southern California. This newest COVID-19 case was the first confirmed in Texas. The other 14 cases have been confirmed in California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Washington state, Arizona and Wisconsin.Health officials say there will likely be additional COVID-19 cases in the coming days and weeks, including people who recently returned from Wuhan. While 195 people were discharged from quarantine on Tuesday, more than 600 people who returned on chartered flights from Wuhan remain under federal quarantine and are being closely monitored to contain the spread of the virus.In China, the government said Thursday that more than 59,800 people have been infected with the virus and the country’s death toll has risen to 1,367, 1564

For Tammi Fitzgerald, being a flight attendant was an adventure. So much so, she thought she’d never want to retire from American Airlines. "I don't think there's a flight attendant out there that doesn't have a love affair with what they are doing," Fitzgerald says.But things took a turn after a strange incident in 2010. While on one flight, Fitzgerald says she smelled an unusual odor that made her sick. "My eyes were watering,” she describes. “I had a headache that was like on the front of my head, and it was just a bass drum and my nose started dripping." Fitzgerald compared the smell to the odor of moldy socks. Since then, Fitzgerald says she experienced several of what the airline industry calls "fume events.” "It's like kind of sticking and exhaust pipe out your car into your cabin and not doing anything about it," says Dr. Susan Michaelis, an aviation health and safety consultant. Michaelis, a former pilot, has a PHD in safety science. Some of her research on fume events has been published by the World Health Organization. Some experts say fume events happen because part of the air passengers breathe is pulled through the jet's engine. If it mixes with oils and chemicals and then goes into the cabin, they say it can make people sick. According to research done at Kansas State University, there are on average five fume events a day in the U.S. Judith Anderson with the Association of Flight Attendants worries it's a larger problem. "Because airlines are not required to report what are called fume events when they happen on the ground, that estimate of five or so per day is an underestimate of what's actually happening," Anderson says. Boeing disputes this, saying “cabin air is safe to breathe" and "exposure to trace levels of organophosphate contamination" is not harmful. "The initial symptoms can be flu-like symptoms, stomach cramping so you might think, ‘I’m coming down with something,’” Anderson says. “Many people report symptoms consistent with exposure to carbon monoxide gas, like headache, dizziness, fainting, disorientation, those sorts of symptoms." American Airlines told us they train crews to report fume events. Southwest says they use the modern Boeing 737, which has systems to keep the cabin safe. JetBlue didn't have an answer to our questions. Several airlines didn't respond at all. As for Fitzgerald, she says she had to take leave from her job because of fume events, and she eventually retired. Medical records show she was suffering from inhalation irritation. The good news is, there are several things shoppers can do to make sure no one else gets your package except you.“Know when your package is getting delivered,” said Torres. “Don’t order and be going out of town for a couple of days when you were waiting for a package to arrive.”Torres says people should be monitoring delivery updates and be sure to grab their package once it’s delivered. She says shoppers can often times track and reroute packages online or through an app so they arrive when they are ready to pick them up.“A lot of the courier services from FedEx to UPS will let you reroute, and they can either hold them at their hub or they can hold them at a retail store.”That’s exactly what Amy Dallam is doing this holiday season. “One of the things I do is I sign up for text notifications of the delivery status so I know when it’s approaching and I can maybe delay an errand or something,” explained Dallam.If you’re not home during a delivery, experts say it’s a good idea to ask a neighbor to hold onto your package. Another safe option is mailing your package to a secure locker or P.O Box. You can also have the retailer hold on to your goods.“You can buy online and go into a store pick it up in a locker so now it’s contact free you get your item and safe and secure and you can get it the same day,” said Torres.Torres encourages anyone who has their package stolen to file a report with police.As criminals look for their next opportunity neighbors say they’ll be watching.“I would say, just as neighbors, look out for each other and if you see something that’s not right, follow up on it,” Dallam.
