Far from the smooth, fast-paced rides of the Oscar darling Chezelle's previous work, including "Whiplash," "First Man" is a meticulous, visually stunning 360-degree look at the space race, honing in on Armstrong's personal perspective, as well as that of his dutiful yet understandably resentful wife, Janet Shearon (Claire Foy).  The upshot: To accomplish great things, great sacrifices must be made. This is no hagiography. Gosling's portrait of Armstrong is that of an often callous, unfeeling workaholic who often shunted off the affections of his family in favor of other needs -- sometimes work, other times petulant solitude. The same indifference distanced him from colleagues and superiors. Gosling's smoldering intensity is an unnervingly convincing a replication of Armstrong's demeanor.The movie soars when it lifts off the ground, allowing the talented visual effects team to flex their muscles and show off bar-raising shots of test pilots screaming at Mach 3, rocket launches piercing the stratosphere and especially in the climactic payoff, as man takes his small step and mankind his great leap.Chezelle sometimes loses grip on his narrative momentum as his story meanders among the numerous test missions, bureaucratic disputes and training missions Armstrong and his colleagues had to endure in order to reach toward the heights their collective obsession drove them toward.A ruthless edit could have trimmed away some of the ancillary material and reshaped "First Man" into a leaner, more economical story flow that would have been truer to the spirit of the journey rather than wallowing in documentarian style detail. More story and less history would have made "First Man" seem like more of a thrill ride than homework. As it stands, "First Man" is a moon shot that feels a little too grounded for its own good.RATING: 2.5 stars out of 4. 2388

Listening to music, whether it's classical, hip hop or pop, is a hobby many of us take for granted. As one Ohio teenager realized, for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, enjoying music isn't that easy."My invention was taking music, create a music visualizer that could take a musical input and develop an intuitive visualization to convey all the emotions that music does convey, for the deaf and hearing-impaired to really connect with music," said Aaron Ziegler, an 11th grader who took home the Technology Award at the virtual Ohio Invention Convention for his invention this year.Ziegler got the idea for his music visualizer after working at a summer camp that helped children with special needs connect with their emotions through music. He realized he wanted to give those who are deaf or hearing impaired an emotional connection with music."The computer reads the entire song and figures out the attributes and what to take out. It then goes through behind the scenes and codes, which converts to the color display and then which outputs," said Ziegler.The hope is to convey the emotions of music with pictures and colors."Current music visualizers, at least the ones that are accessible today, are rather inadequate in terms of conveying the full emotions. A lot of them are really a rhythmic thing and not really inclusive to their emotions," said Ziegler.Ohio Invention League's representative, who goes by Professor Prototype, hopes Aaron Ziegler's invention inspires other young inventors."I think one of the things that young people see when they learn about Aaron’s project is the power that he had to solve a problem that was important to him,” she said. “That they all have the power to look around the world and say, ‘How can I make the world a better place? How can I help other people?’"The Invention Convention is free for any student or school to participate and kids can still tap into their creative ideas for inventions and participate virtually."While they can be the advanced technical solutions like Aaron's, which is a wonderful union of stem skills and problem-solving, there's also lots of different ways to solve a problem and sometimes that involves the stuff you have in your garage," said Professor Prototype.'It's really easy to do this stuff. All I had was a laptop and a WiFi connection,” said Ziegler. “I handled 90 percent of what I was doing, and you don't even need that. You can use cardboard and stuff, so I want to make sure people remember that really anything you think you can need, you can do it.”Ziegler's win earned him a college savings award. LAKEWOOD, Ohio — Ohio nonprofit LakewoodAlive has apologized after a man dressed in a blackface Tiger Woods costume marched in the organization’s Spooky Pooch Parade. People on social media have called the costume racist, disgusting and offensive.In a video posted to Facebook by LakewoodAlive that has since been removed, the unidentified man was seen wearing blackface makeup while dressed in Woods’ trademark red polo shirt and Nike hat. He was seen holding a frame with the words “Breaking News – Tiger’s Back,” and pushing a pet stroller outfitted with a mock putting green.By Monday morning, several users responded on the nonprofit's Facebook page condemning the man’s costume as well as the organization for allowing him to march in the parade.“You need to respond to the fact that a man in blackface marched in your parade,” Clara Masters said in a Facebook comment. “This is not okay and incredibly offensive.”“This racist costume should never have been allowed in the event,” wrote Alison Meredith. “The participant should have been stopped at registration, and when that failed should have been pulled from the parade at whatever point an organizer saw it, even at the risk of 'causing a scene'. The tepid response and shrugging off of responsibility are making a terrible situation much worse. You allowed a blatant and disgusting display of racism in your event that was advertised as being for the community. Larry Nassar has been moved from a federal prison in Tucson, Ariz. after his lawyer claims Nassar was assaulted in prison.The disgraced former Michigan State and USA Gymnastics doctor was moved to a Federal Transfer Center in Oklahoma City, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. It's a place where inmates stay while waiting to be transferred to another prison.Nassar pleaded guilty to multiple charges of sexual assault in November 2017 after being charged with molesting seven girls, all but one of whom were gymnasts. Those sexual assaults happened at Michigan State University.In a filing by his attorneys, Nassar claims that he was abused in prison and also mentions the time when he was charged at by one of the victims' father in court."Dr. Nassar reports, that in late May he was physically attacked in federal prison within a few hours of being placed in general population," the court filing reads.  953

Let's face it, pets are family. And even when you don't have a home, they come first. One non-profit group of dedicated veterinarians, is helping make sure these "street dogs" are getting the care they need, much to the relief of their human companions.Shannon Arakaki is doing her best to comfort her dog Rocky, as he gets his ear drained. After all, she says he's always been there to comfort her."Oh yeah there's been some ups and downs," said Arakaki. "Lived in my truck you know we stay at my truck off and on right now."When Rocky hurt his ear, Arakaki had no idea how she'd deal with it."I don't have the money to go to a vet and this is my only option right now unless you know I'm going to sell my truck," said Arakaki. "I can't do that I'm not going to go live in a tent."That's where one group of veterinarians come in. They are treating Rocky for free."This is phenomenal," Arakaki said. "Because it's so hard and when you're at the point where you don't really have any money and you're trying just basically to survive. They come before you."With just a table and supplies these vets are caring for the pets of people who are homeless or near homeless. They call themselves the Street Dog Coalition, setting up care centers on streets around the country, or in this case, at a shelter."We are not doing major surgeries," said Dr. Jon Geller, who founded the Street Dog Coalition. "We're not doing x-rays but we have to use our x-ray vision which just means a lot of best guessing going on."Dr. Geller says it not only helps pets stay healthy, but also tears down barriers for people who already have enough up."What do you do for a job interview?" Dr. Geller said. "What do you do for a job? There's no doggie daycare and they can't get on the bus and staying over night in shelters but that's in most cases it won't happen."Dr. Geller says sometimes the homeless are judged for having pets, but not here."They will feed their pets first," Dr. Geller said. "So they live pretty good lives and these owners are pretty committed and I think that we should be supportive of their efforts to have pets."They are helping preserve relationships that go beyond mere companionship."Without having somebody for me to give a damn about I may not care about myself as much," Arakaki said. 2324
