As the world waits for deliveries of Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine, the pharmaceutical company is having to adjust their target after hitting supply chain obstacles, according to the Wall Street Journal.“Scaling up the raw material supply chain took longer than expected,” a company spokeswoman told the WSJ.Pfizer and partner BioNTech SE had hoped to ship out 100 million doses of their vaccine by the end of the year, that has now reportedly been cut to estimates of about 50 million.Two doses are needed for each person to be vaccinated.Pfizer did not elaborate on where the raw material shortfalls happened. They did say some raw materials in early production earlier this year did not meet their standards and they had to fix the issue.After the WSJ’s report, Pfizer’s stock price dropped and the S&P 500 fell slightly.The United Kingdom has granted emergency use of the Pfizer vaccine, and is expected to start administering doses soon. The FDA in the U.S. is considering a similar authorization, which could come later in December.As part of Operation Warp Speed, the U.S. Government has purchased 100 million doses of Pfizer’s vaccine, with an option to buy more.Roughly 20 million of those doses were expected by the end of the year once the FDA granted emergency use authorization. No word on how Pfizer’s shipping delays could impact this number.Pfizer says their production lines in the U.S. and Europe are complete and they are “confident” they will supply the targeted number of doses in early 2021. 1524

ATLANTA — Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp is suing Atlanta to block the city from enforcing its mandate to wear a mask in public and other rules related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Kemp and Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr, in a state court suit filed late Thursday, argued that Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has overstepped her authority and must obey Kemp’s executive orders under state law. The suit comes a day after Kemp clarified his executive orders to expressly block Atlanta and at least 14 other local governments from requiring people to wear face coverings. Kemp’s order was met with defiance Thursday by Bottoms and other mayors, who said they would continue enforcing their mandates and were prepared to go to court.Kemp has maintained a policy of voluntary use of masks throughout the state. Georgia has seen a significant increase in COVID-19 cases in the past week. In recent days, the state is averaging about 3,000 new cases a day — by far the highest totals since the pandemic began.The CDC recommends that everyone wear a mask in public, particularly during situations where social distancing is difficult. 1133

BALTIMORE — A doctor described as providing care to the "sickest patients" in Baltimore died of COVID-19, Mercy Medical Center said in a Facebook post.Dr. Joseph J. Costa, the chief of critical care at the hospital, was 56 years old."Joe was more than a trusted colleague; he was also a true friend to many. He dedicated his life and career to caring for the sickest patients. And when the global pandemic came down upon us, Joe selflessly continued his work on the front lines—deeply committed to serving our patients and our City during this time of great need. His memory will live on as an example to us all," the hospital said in a Facebook post.Costa joined Mercy in 1997 and became Chief of Critical Care in 2005. As President Donald Trump and Republicans attempt to reverse the results of last week’s presidential election in Pennsylvania, a significant case often cited by Trump’s supporters has lost steam.The House Oversight Committee, led by Democratic Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, announced that Richard Hopkins has “recanted” his claim of election fraud in Erie County, Pennsylvania. As the debate rages nationwide over what to do over a plethora of Confederate monuments, new concern is mounting over a Confederate rally planned for Richmond, Virginia, on Saturday.At the center of the debate is Richmond’s “Monument Avenue,” a collection of statues of Confederate leaders in the former Confederate capital. Back in May, the city’s mayor Levar Stoney said that while he personally believes the monuments are an “endorsement of a shameful past,” he didn’t believe there should be a rush to remove them. He had hoped for a dialogue to take place, and even floated the idea of adding plaques to the statues for more accurate historical context."I think we have an opportunity here in the city to actually be a hub for reconciliation."He created the “Monument Avenue Commission” and even solicited public input in the form of open public meetings. Richmond residents were not shy voicing their opinions.Rita Willis, a former teacher, attended the Aug. 9 public forum to say they are a part of Virginia’s history, whether some like it or not. However she emphasized that if they stay, other statues should be erected that highlight people of other races and ethnicities.George Knight, on the other hand, stood in the auditorium and gave city officials a tongue lashing.“Now is the time to finally get rid of the monuments and replace them with people who actually fought for freedom who actually stood for justice,” Knight said, his voice raising as officials urged him to keep calm. “You lost! Get over it already! Get rid of your participation trophies on monument avenue, get rid of it.”He was met with a spattering of boos as well as cheers.But some attitudes regarding the statues changed following the white nationalist rally last month in Charlottesville, Virginia, which culminated in counter-protestor Heather Heyer losing her life. Stoney is one who’s taken a slightly different position since Charlottesville and believes that perhaps they should now consider taking them down. He wrote in a statement that it had become clear that the statues were being used as a “rallying point for division and intolerance and violence.”The group rallying support around the Robert E. Lee statue on Saturday is a relatively small group out of Tennessee known as “CSA II: The New Confederate States of America.” The group’s president said they were “standing up for their proud heritage” in a nonviolent manner and that any white nationalists or racists who show up to rally with them will not be accepted.He said his message to Richmonders on edge regarding the weekend’s rally is simple: “We are here for peaceful purposes only.”“We will not stand for any violence in Richmond, Virginia.”But the city says they are taking protective measures to be safe. The mayor and police chief announced this week that any objects that can be used as weapons will be prohibited. One type of weapon that won’t be prohibited, however, are guns, as Virginia is an open-carry state.“If you do not respect our city,” Stoney warned, “law enforcement will lock you up."  3084
