The district had previously offered families an option of in-person or online distance learning.Monday's announcement comes as President Donald Trump continues to put pressure on states to open school campuses. Last week, Trump threatened to withhold federal money if schools don’t reopen in the fall.The district has said it has enough state funding to operate for the first half of the year but will rely on federal funding for the spring semester. Instruction will resume on Aug.18 in Los Angeles Unified and Aug. 31 in San Diego Unified, as previously scheduled. Both districts will continue planning for a return to in-person learning during the 2020-21 academic year, as soon as public health conditions allow.This announcement represents a significant disappointment for the many thousands of teachers, administrators and support staff, who were looking forward to welcoming students back in August. It is obviously an even greater disappointment to the many parents who are anxious for their students to resume their education. Most of all, this decision will impact our students in ways that researchers will take years to understand.Our leaders owe it to all of those impacted by the COVID-19 closures to increase the pace of their work. No one should use the delay in the reopening of classrooms as a reason to relax. The coronavirus has not taken a summer vacation, as many had hoped. Indeed, the virus has accelerated its attacks on our community.The federal government must provide schools with the resources we need to reopen in a responsible manner.In the past four months, we have provided more than 47 million meals to families, distributed more than 250,000 computers to students and trained more than 35,000 educators in online learning. It is clear our two systems will need to create our own source for reliable scientific information.Los Angeles Unified plans to update the community in early August. San Diego Unified will provide a public assessment on Aug.10 of how soon (after the first week of school) a physical return to class would be possible. Home values rose 10.1 percent to 1,100.According to the latest census numbers, in the year-span ending July 2017, adding up all the people moving into and out of California translates into a net loss of 138,000 people. In San Diego County, there is also an apparent exodus with a net loss of nearly 16,000 people in the year ending in July 2017. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One of the San Diego Zoo's oldest residents was euthanized due to age-related illnesses Wednesday.The zoo's male African lion, M'bari, had been suffering from a degenerative kidney, large kidney cyst, and spinal arthritis and under veterinary care before the decision was made to put him down, according to park spokesperson Andrew Jones.At 15-years-old, M'bari had exceeded expectations of a lion's average lifespan, which is about 10 years in the wild and can exceed 25 years in captivity, according to the zoo."In recent days, his condition had steadily worsened, despite attempts by animal care staff to modify his habitat to make him more comfortable," a statement from the zoo read. "This morning, because of his worsening quality of life, animal care staff made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize him."M'bari was introduced to locals at the San Diego Wild Animal Park in 2004 with the opening of Lion Camp when he was about two years old. He eventually moved to the San Diego Zoo in 2009, and has most recently lived with his mate, Etosha, in the Harry and Grace Steele Elephant Odyssey habitat. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Now that Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration, San Diego County is one step closer to getting more people vaccinated.Moderna says its vaccine is safe and 94% effective. It will come in two doses taken 28 days apart.This week, there are two county hospitals that are expecting shipments of Moderna's vaccine. According to hospitals officials, the first shipment will arrive at Rady Children’s Hospital on Monday. It's unclear how many doses of the vaccine the hospital will receive.UC San Diego is also scheduled to receive their Moderna COVID-19 shipment this week.Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Twitter that California is expecting 672,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine. It’s still unclear how many of those will be given to San Diego.By the end of the week and with two vaccines available, the federal government expects there will be 7.9 million doses delivered to more than 3,700 locations across the country.The distribution of the Moderna vaccine comes as the Centers for Diease Control and Prevention releases new recommendations about who should get the vaccine next. The CDC says frontline essential workers and adults ages 75 and older should be the priority in the next round.The agency describes essential workers as firefighters, police, teachers, and school staff. Those working in food and agricultural sectors, as well as U.S. Postal Service employees, public transit workers, and grocery store workers would be in that category.San Diego County has not said if the CDC's new recommendations will have any impact on their vaccine roll out plan.Until a wide distribution is available, the governor asks people to stay at home and wear a mask. 1734

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police have released pictures of a man accused of shooting and killing a 27-year-old man in the Midway District in late February.Police say Ernesto Castallenos Martinez, 41, shot and killed Alexander Mazin in a parking lot behind the 24 Hour Fitness on the 3600 block of Midway Drive.Following the shooting, police were led to the intersection of 30th Street and Upas Street where an hours-long standoff took place.RELATED: Police identify Midway District shooting victim, suspect of North Park standoff?After SWAT teams entered an apartment in the area, they didn’t find Martinez.
