SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The DMV is apologizing for long wait times as they work through a new queuing system and problems with the REAL ID.Wait times (without an appointment) used to be under two hours, now they're closer to 4-5 hours. The DMV issued this statement to 10News:The issue is employees have to manually enter the ID number given to each customer, since a new system went online two weeks ago. The ID number consists of your initials and the last four digits of your phone number.The process prior was completely automatic.The other issue relates to the REAL ID. Employees are taking more time to explain to customers what they need to have in order to get the ID. SAN DIEGO, Calif. — As we work to manage the pressure of the pandemic, a new device could take away some of the stress.San Diego State University (SDSU) engineers, biologists, mathematicians, computer scientists, and public health experts have worked together to develop a wearable device to detect early, remote detection of lung function abnormalities.“Knowing the current status of our health, I think that will give a lot of benefit," said Kee Moon, a researcher, and professor of mechanical engineering at SDSU. The size of a Band-Aid, the wearable device contains medical-grades sensors, collecting more than 4,000 data points per second. Placed on a person’s chest, it monitors heart and lung health, looking for problems in real-time.The device can detect abnormalities in the lungs before a person shows COVID-19 symptoms, alerting doctors before there’s a true emergency and hopefully preventing hospitalizations.By monitoring heart health, users can also get a better sense of their stress levels.“Understanding the level of stress you’re getting is important, as important as the other physical health monitoring," said Moon. Moon was already working on the technology before the pandemic to monitor other health conditions like asthma, COPD, sleep apnea, and lung cancer. But COVID-19 accelerated and pivoted the focus of the research.The team hopes to license the technology to a company that can produce and sell the device, likely at a price of around a few hundred dollars.“Seeing that would be a tremendous joy for me," said Moon.Moon is hopeful the wearable could be sold next year and that it will continue helping patients after the pandemic is over, delivering a sense of control in a time of such uncertainty. 1740

SAN DIEGO (KGTV): A vacant lot next to the College-Rolando area library has become a dumping ground for homeless people and their trash. Now neighbors are fed up and want the owners to do something about it."My house is not even this trashy," says Erin Webster, who visits the library every day. "I keep my house clean. I think we should keep this whole community clean."The lot, at 6650 Montezuma Road, is owned by 52 Blue Falcon LLC, an investment group. They've filed paperwork with the city to build a 4-story Holiday Inn Express on the property. They're still waiting for final city approval."Everybody's trying to get through this process as quickly as possible," says Jeannette Temple with the Atlantis Group, who is a consultant on the project.In the meantime, homeless people have broken through the fence blocking off the lot. There are piles of mattresses, food, tents, electronics and other garbage piled up on every side.Temple told 10News the owners hired a cleaning company to come this week and remove the trash. She also says they have contracted with a security company to come twice a day and kick out anyone who doesn't belong.She says they welcome the complaints from the community and the owners want to know when things aren't right."We appreciate their eyes and ears because we don't want anything bad to happen at the property either," says Temple.Temple says the owners hope to start construction on the hotel at the start of 2019 and it should take about 18 months to finish.City of San Diego representatives say there are ways people can report problem properties in their neighborhood. SAN DIEGO,Calif. (KGTV) -- A North San Diego County mother died early Sunday morning and the father of her children has been arrested, authorities said.San Diego County Sheriff's Department deputies responded to calls of a possible shooting just after midnight at a home on 25969 Duro Rd. in Valley Center, according to Lt. Chad Boudreau of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.When deputies arrived, they found an adult female suffering from a traumatic injury. The victim was rushed to Palomar Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries, said Boudreau.The victim was identified as Mayra Meraz, 31. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Several trailers were set up at El Toyon Park in National City and will become a study site for a COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial, ran by UC San Diego.Drugmaker Johnson & Johnson is looking to enroll participants worldwide for phase three of its Janssen trial, including here in San Diego.UCSD will recruit the majority of the participants.The trial was scheduled to get underway on October 7th, but UCSD researchers now say they're looking at Friday as a start date."We hope to enroll about 2,000 people in San Diego, the study will be enrolling 60,000 people internationally," said Dr. Susan Little, a UCSD professor of medicine and principal investigator for the trial. "Eight Department of Defense trailers form the basis of our permanent vaccine site, vaccine clinic, in National City."Little said this will be a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to determine the vaccine's safety and efficacy."Does it reduce the frequency of COVID infection overall or the severity of COVID infection among study participants?" she said.Little said there is already a lot of data available from the past."This is the same vaccine vector that has been used for many other infectious diseases like HIV, Zika, Ebola," she said.Although the trial is open to all San Diego County residents who qualify, she said the focus would be on recruiting residents from the South Bay, which is why the clinic was set up in National City, instead of UCSD's La Jolla or Hillcrest locations."Communities of color have been harder hit in the sense they have higher rates of hospitalization, and many of them have higher rates of death, our hope was by placing the vaccine trial in a community that has higher rates of infection we could reach a more highly impacted community," she explained. "Those are populations that we hope will have a greater potential benefit from this vaccine."After concerns were raised over another trial that was later put on hold, UCSD worked with the Chicano Federation to ensure South Bay residents get the information they need to make an informed decision if they want to participate."We are putting safety as paramount for these studies, no study is going forward unless we are confident about the safety of the vaccine," said Little.The Janssen trial will be the third for UCSD to join.
