A student at Equestrian Trails Elementary School in Wellington, Florida nearly died last week from a freak accident. If it weren't for the quick thinking of his teachers, he likely would have.Annalisa Moradi and her 8-year-old Kolston are counting their blessings."Without them, this story would have been different,” Moradi said.Kolston, a third-grader, nearly died last Wednesday, all because of a wooden pencil."He's a hockey player, he's a lacrosse player. I think and worry all day long about what's going to happen to him and little did I know that it would be a pencil that would ultimately almost end his life,” Moradi said.Kolston had just sharpened the pencil and placed it point up in his backpack sleeve."When I went to go sit down, it stabbed me in my artery," Kolston said.The brachial artery in his arm was impaled. Half the pencil sank into the skin just above his armpit."I didn't really feel anything,” he said.And that’s why Kolston accidentally pulled the pencil out when he stood up. With blood pouring everywhere, Kolston immediately ran and told his nearest teachers."We plan for so much with our schools, our crisis response teams. Our first aid training and everything but this was just one of those things that wouldn't be written on a piece of paper to prepare for,” said Elizabeth Richards, one of the teachers who helped Kolston. "It was one one of those freak accidents, we knew that he needed medical attention immediately."Richards actually studied in nursing school before becoming a teacher. That background expertise took over, despite being surrounded by countless children walking around the hallways during class dismissal."We laid him down on the floor, applied continuous pressure to the point,” she said. "Other instincts take over and everything else around us didn't seem to matter. Kolston really is the true hero here. He came right out and got an adult."Teacher Mandi Kapopoulos used her own shirt sleeve create a tourniquet."I pulled my arm out of the sleeve and wrapped it around his arm where it was bleeding,” Kapopoulos said. "He was brave. He wasn't crying. He wasn't screaming."It took paramedics 20 minutes to arrive but the teachers stayed with Kolston the entire time, applying pressure to the wound."As a teacher and as a mother, I would want the same thing for my children, to put the kids first and to try in any situation like that to do what we need to do quickly and calmly," Kapopoulos said.Since the injury happened toward the end of school, Annalisa Moradi was actually at the front of the school waiting to pick her son up. Teachers informed her of what happened and helped take care of the other children while waiting for the ambulance."He was covered in blood and I knew if was obviously very serious," Moradi said. “Without the teachers and the principal, this story would have been different."It wasn’t until Moradi was en route that paramedics told her just how serious the injury was."When we were taking the ride in the ambulance, they told me if these teachers didn't place a tourniquet on his arm, we would have lost him," she said.With two staples in his arm, Kolston went back to school the very next day.His teachers hope this experience can be a lesson for other parents."As a mother of two children myself, knowing how precious life is -- our thanks and gratitude comes everyday when we watch Kolston walk through these hallways," Richards said.Moradi will make sure her son is more careful next time he packs his backpack."Even if you're in a hurry, there's a place for your pencil -- your pencil box! Slow down, take the time to put it in there," she said. "Just be aware of what's going on around you."Medical experts suggest that if you get impaled or stabbed, it’s best to leave the object in until paramedics arrive so that blood can’t escape the wound.As for Kolston, he did not need to get a blood transfusion, thanks to the teachers helping to stop the bleeding. His staples in his arm should be removed in a few days. 4091

A New York taxi kingpin and business partner of President Donald Trump's attorney Michael Cohen has agreed to cooperate with the government, The New York Times reported Tuesday.The Times said the agreement for Evegny "Gene" Freidman would allow him to avoid jail time and would have him work with prosecutors in both the state and federal investigations.Word of the Freidman agreement came just days after news broke that Jeffrey Yohai, the son-in-law of former Trump campaign chief Paul Manafort, had reached a plea agreement.Freidman, known as New York's "Taxi King," was indicted on state charges last year by then-New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who alleged Freidman and others failed to pay million in MTA surcharges between 2012 and 2015.Freidman's agreement, given his ties to Cohen as a business partner, may put still more pressure on the Trump associate and attorney, who faced federal raids in April before the Justice Department announced it had been conducting a months-long investigation into him.CNN previously reported the FBI searches included a request for documents related to Cohen's ownership of taxi medallions and sought informationabout taxi owners who had financial dealings with Cohen.Cohen's role as Trump's personal attorney has come under increasing scrutiny, due in large part to the payment he conceded facilitating to the adult film star Stormy Daniels. A recent study published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that antibodies might protect people who've already had COVID-19 from being reinfected for at least six months.Researchers looked at 12,541 healthcare workers at Oxford University Hospitals in the United Kingdom and were followed for up to 31 weeks.In the study, researchers investigated the incidences of COVID-19 infection by conducting polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests on the healthcare workers who had tested positive and negative, including both symptomatic and asymptomatic cases.The study results showed that 11,364 did not have antibody levels, and 1,265 had positive results, which also included 88 healthcare workers in whom seroconversion occurred during follow-up. A total of 223 anti-spike–negative health care workers had a positive PCR test (1.09 per 10,000 days at risk), up to 100 during screening were found to be asymptomatic, and 123 were to have symptoms, the study found.Researchers said that individuals who had anti-spike antibodies had no symptomatic infections. 1083

High School teacher has been removed from the classroom, pending an investigation into an interaction with a Haitian student, in which the teacher refers to the country as “some third-world island country."A video of the incident was posted on the Facebook page of the student’s family and has received tens of thousands of views.In the video, you can hear the teacher talk to the student“It’s called a door, let me show you how it works,” the teacher said. “I don’t know how it works where you’re from, down in some third-world island country, where they don’t got them. Let me show you what it’s like in America.”“That was a racist comment,” said Haitian activist and radio host James Leger. “It’s hurtful and I’m hurt and the community is hurting.”Leger said his phones were ringing non-stop Thursday morning when he addressed the topic on his radio show.The family of the student said they first went to the school to address the issue but when no action was taken, they posted the video online.On Thursday morning, Palm Beach Gardens High parents got this call from the principal:“Hello Parents, this is Principal Larry Clawson. Many of you may have heard media reports of a video circulating of one of our teachers verbally interacting with a student in a potentially inappropriate manner. This call is to assure you I am aware of the video and the matter is being addressed by professional standards at this time. Because this is an open inquiry, I am not at liberty to share any additional details with you, but I wanted to assure you we have processes in place to review incidents like this.”Some former and current students are defending the teacher.“Great coach, great man, great father figure,” one person wrote.Others are saying the teacher was simply joking.“That man jokes all day. A Michigan State University trustee who pledged support for victims of sex abuse has opposed them repeatedly in courtrooms as a lawyer, an investigation by Scripps station WXYZ in Detroit has found.Trustee Dan Kelly was elected to the board of trustees in 2016 as the Larry Nassar sex abuse scandal erupted.  His university bio touts 25 years experience as an attorney representing school districts.  In at least seven cases reviewed by WXYZ, Kelly represented districts accused of failing to protect students from sex abuse.Kelly has represented districts like Roseville, Dundee and, at least four times, Warren Consolidated Schools in sex abuse civil cases.Former Warren gym teacher James Kearly pleaded no contest to fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct charges involving three young girls.  In 2004, Kearly and Warren Schools were sued by the victims’ parents, alleging the district ignored more than a decade’s worth of Kearly’s documented fondling.As abuse allegations stacked up, according to testimony, the district moved Kearly to a school that taught younger students in the hopes that he would be less attracted to underdeveloped elementary school girls.While there, three second grade girls said Kearly molested them.“He touched my privates, Mr. K,” testified one of his young victims. “Sometimes in the office and sometimes in the gym.”During trial, Kelly told jurors the district couldn’t be held responsible for Kearly’s actions and, while there was no excuse for what he did, “the touching was always on the outside of the clothing… was very brief and…there’s very strong evidence that (the girls) didn’t know that it was inappropriate when it occurred.”WXYZ shared Kelly’s words with Morgan McCaul, one of Larry Nassar’s victims.“That’s gross.  What you just read is gross,” she said. “When this is a leader and essentially the architect of campus climate, I don’t know how you can send your kids to Michigan State University and feel safe.”The jury in the Kearly case returned a .1 million verdict in favor of the victims.In 2006, Kelly defended a district accused of ignoring allegations that teacher Roderick Reese molested 11 elementary school girls. As is common in sex abuse cases, the plaintiffs filed their lawsuits as Jane Does. But Kelly filed a motion to have the young girls' names made public, saying that the case had already been tried in the press. WXYZ spoke with a parent of one of Reese’s victims, who was 12 when Kelly wanted her name unsealed.“It was kind of like, who’s on trial here?” the father said, who asked that we conceal his identity to protect his daughter. “It’s not my kid or the other parent’s children.”The judge denied Kelly’s motion. The case settled for an undisclosed amount and, in a criminal trial, the teacher was convicted of child molestation. 12 years later, the father of Reese’s victim hasn’t forgotten what Dan Kelly tried to do in court.“I was totally stunned,” he recalled. “Why would he want to do this to these children? They didn’t do anything wrong.”In a January trustees meeting, Kelly apologized to Nassar’s abuse survivors and said, until recently, he had viewed the Nassar scandal through the eyes of a lawyer.“In the back of my mind,” Kelly said, “I thought that this would be resolved in the litigation process.”Attorney Mick Grewal represents more than 80 of Nassar’s victims.“I think he viewed them as the opposition, not survivors,” Grewal said. “It’s clear to me that he’s not the right guy. It’s actually clear to me that everyone on the board is not the right guy or woman.”Dan Kelly declined an on-camera interview, but by phone said he believes he can be the best advocate for victims of Nassar’s abuse. Those that have faced with him in court aren’t so sure.“I don’t think he’s out to protect the victims, myself,” said the father whose daughter Kelly tried to name in court. “And being a defense lawyer, why would he?
