UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met here Thursday with Bill Gates, chairman of Bill & Gates Foundation, to discuss issues concerning development and poverty alleviation.     During their talks on the sidelines of the a high-level U.N. meeting for Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Wen expressed appreciation over Gates' long-term efforts for promoting settlement of issues concerning development.     The current turbulence in the international economic and financial situation, sharp increases in oil prices and food supplyshortage have made things more difficult for poor countries, Wen said. ROME, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Food security in China is guaranteed despite the recent major earthquake and heavy snowfalls earlier this year, China's Agriculture Minister Sun Zhengcai said in an interview with Xinhua.     "The earthquake will not change the nation-wide situation of agricultural production this year since local output of the affected area is quite small compared to that of the whole country," Sun said, who was attending a world summit here on soaring food prices, hosted by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).     An 8.0-magnitude earthquake hit southwestern China in May, with its epicenter in Wenchuan County, a mountainous area of Sichuan province, with the death toll currently at over 70,000 people and causing massive economic loss.     Sun acknowledged local agricultural production was in no way immune from damage. The harvest season for nearly 19,000 hectares of wheat in Taizhou started on June 3.    "The damage was mainly to planted crops and livestock," he said, adding an urgent harvesting and planting effort has helped minimize the impact and which had no national implications.     The devastating earthquake struck following severe snow and ice storms that swept southern China early this year, giving rise to concerns about food shortages in the world's most populous country.     However, Sun said food security remains guaranteed because of sufficient stockpiles and a big harvest ahead.     "This year, China's agriculture has prevailed over disasters of snow and ice storms and the extremely severe earthquake, and our summer grains and oilseeds are set to harvest good crops," he said.     Since 2004, food production in China has increased for four consecutive years and the total grain output exceeded 500 million tons last year.     Sun said China's grain reserves are currently abundant and there is enough supply of major farm products to offset the effects of the two natural disasters.     If there are no more major disasters, China is expected to have a big summer harvest this year, with grain output set to rise for the fifth consecutive year. Even in southern China, oilseeds, which had been feared to drop due to the snowfalls, would reverse the declining trend in the previous three years.     Sun said as a huge, developing country with 1.3 billion people, China has always paid great attention to food and agricultural development.     The Chinese government will continue to adhere to the food security policy of basic self-sufficiency, complemented by imports and exports to readjust surplus and shortfalls, he said.

YINCHUAN, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Delegates from China's central government presented a gift to Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region for the 50th anniversary of its founding.     At a ceremony held in the region's capital Yinchuan on Monday, senior official He Guoqiang delivered a Chinese Ding. That's a three-legged ancient cooking vessel, which represents solidification between Han and Hui nationalities.     The present has been signed by China's President Hu Jintao.     A delegation from the central government on Monday arrived in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in northwest China, where most residents are muslims, to mark the anniversary.     He, head of the delegation and member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, together with the region's Party chief Chen Jianguo unveiled the present atthe square of Ningxia Museum. JIUQUAN, Gansu, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- The crew of China's Shenzhou-7 space mission is scheduled to meet the press at 17:30 on Wednesday.     In addition, the headquarters of China's third manned space mission will hold another press conference at 14:30 Wednesday.     The crew, who will conduct the first Chinese space walk, is waiting for a launch window at Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern Gansu Province.     Depending on weather, the launch is scheduled between Sept. 25 and 30. The undated photo shows technicians help the Shenzhou-7 manned spaceship to dock with the Long-March II-F rocket at an assembly plant. The spaceship has been finished docking with the rocket recently.    The Shenzhou-7 spacecraft will send three Chinese astronauts who will make a historical spacewalk.     Six Chinese astronauts are ready for the mission, three pilots who will finally be aboard and three substitutes.     However neither the military or the mission's headquarters has officially released their identities, even though many local websites had reported various stories on six favorites.     According to the headquarters' release, three pilots and three substitutes said they were fully confident to successfully accomplish the mission.     After three hours of tests and safety examinations in the last rehearsal on Monday, the mission has been given the green light.     Scientists working for the mission said on Tuesday that the carrier rocket of the spacecraft was ready to be fueled, bringing the launch to the countdown status.

HARBIN, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin on Saturday urged new social and economic development in northeast China's Heilongjiang province, in accordance with the country's strategy to revitalize the old industrial base.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the requirement during an inspection tour of Heilongjiang from Aug. 26 to 30. He visited local farms, enterprises and research institutes.     He said Heilongjiang, the country's largest production base of commodity grain, should make more efforts on grain production, by further increasing agricultural input and infrastructure construction.
