SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The mayor of Temecula has announced his resignation after facing raging criticism over an email stating he didn't “believe there’s ever been a good person of color killed by a police officer." James "Stew" Stewart's comments went viral June 2 and drew a firestorm of calls for his resignation and threats of protests. Stewart made the racist remark in a reply to a constituent "concerned about our police officers and their sensitivity training.""As you know the City of Temecula does not have its own Police Department," Stewart said in his email. I am truly sorry," Stewart said in his resignation letter posted on Facebook late Thursday night.Stewart's comments brought tension to the small tourist destination city during a time in which the nation is seeing daily demonstrations and protests against police killings and racism. A Change.Org petition has started circulating demanding that city officials acknowledge that "systemic racism and police brutality exist in Temecula and the need for reform and consequence."Temecula, a city of about 115,000 residents in Riverside County, is located about 85 miles north of San Diego. The area is a popular Southern California destination known for its dozens of wineries, hot air balloon rides, and festivals similar to Northern California's wine country.Stewart's biography remains published on the city's website. It says that Stewart moved to Temecula in 1991 with his wife and three children from Oswego, Illinois. According to his page, the businessman owns eight barbershops in the area and that he has worked as a dentist during mission trips to Haiti pulling teeth and conducting eye glass clinics in Ethiopia.The city has not released plans to fill his vacant seat. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Navy is trying to find the owner of a boat that washed ashore at the Naval Base Coronado.The boat washed up and came to a rest against the fence that separated Coronado’s dog beach from the base.The Navy is asking the owner to come forward immediately to have the boat removed. The problem can get costly for the Navy.Several boats have already washed ashore this year. If the Navy can’t locate the owner, they have to cover the removal cost.Anyone with information on the boat’s owner is asked to call the Navy legal office at 619-545-8141. 573

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Surgeons at UC San Diego are using new technology that offers more options for patients who have complex thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms. UC San Diego Health System is the first on the West Coast to use Dynamic Morphology Correction, a type of 3D imaging. It allows surgeons to compare scans taken before the procedure to real-time pictures during the surgery.Dr. Mahmoud Malas, Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at UC San Diego, says this type of technology uses minimal iodine contrast which lessens the chance of kidney problems for 25 percent of patients dealing with aneurysms.The data from this technology helps surgeons across the country.Dr. Malas adds, " They create prediction models that helps future surgeons perform procedures more accurately." 795

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The countdown has begun for St. Patrick's Day in San Diego. The Gaslamp District is heavily bedazzled with sparkly green decorations. Many people said they are ready to party.Niamh Thornton is a 24 year old Irish student, now living in San Diego. “Niamh is pronounced like “Christmas Eve,” but with an “N” like “Neev”… It’s Irish,” Thornton said.She has been working at the Field Irish Pub in the Gaslamp District since last June."It's called an Irish Mule… It's lovely,” she said, pointing at a popular drink at the pub.The Irish native was getting ready for a 10-hour shift at the Field Saturday. "It's going to be crazy, I'd say,” Thornton said. Crazy may be an understatement.Saturday, many blocks downtown will be closed from sunrise to sunset-- for the morning Shamrock Run, the daytime parade, and shamROCK, the evening concert. Plus, many will be staring at the television screens, screaming for their favorite Irish teams. “England vs. Ireland in the rugby,” she said. ”And six nations. That’s insane. So this place is going to be packed.”But some people just could not wait to pre-party. Many people we saw in Downtown were showcasing their green accessories and outfits. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The California Highway Patrol has ruled out street racing and DUI as causes of a crash on Interstate 805 in Sorrento Valley that left a man with serious injuries. Traffic came to a standstill in the northbound lanes of the freeway about 2 p.m. when a silver Mercedes SUV hit the driver of a blue Nissan. Witnesses told the CHP the Nissan suddenly stopped in a lane and the driver got out of the car. CHP says the Nissan became disabled and the driver got out of the car after pulling off to the side of the road. The Nissan’s driver was struck and thrown 135 feet before landing on the pavement. The CHP said the man had severe head injuries. A total of four cars were involved in the resulting pileup. Three people were taken to the hospital, San Diego Fire-Rescue reported, but no one aside from the Nissan's driver was seriously hurt. The other drivers stopped and cooperated with the investigation. The affected lanes of the freeway reopened about four hours after the crash.The Nissan was recently purchased, according to the CHP. Investigators said the driver might be a member of the military. 1127
