SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There is new hope for women who were told they could never get pregnant. A local clinic is offering groundbreaking fertility procedures you won't find anywhere else. For 48-year-old Cherie Friesth, this Carmel Valley clinic is giving her hope. "This just gives you a little help and a boost towards that goal," said Friesth.She's already a mother of four and a grandmother of eight, but she wants one more. "This will make it nice that [my son] has someone to look out for and play with."She came all the way from Iowa for Ovarian Rejuvenation. Gen 5 Fertility helps women increase their chances of getting pregnant through Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP. Dr. Samuel Wood is giving them hope. Most of his patients are over the age of 42. "In most cases these women have gone to other fertility centers and have been told 'you have no chance, we’re not going to work with you'", said Wood. The procedure works by isolating platelets from the blood and injecting them back into the ovaries. It helps recruit stem cells that can turn into eggs. "I just keep smiling and thinking it's going to be worth it."Her doctor says her chances are pretty good. "She did not do well in terms of egg number, but it improved the quality of the egg so that we got an embryo that was actually normal in a woman who is 48 years old, and that’s extremely unusual," said Wood. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Zoo's newest resident is getting the hang of life as a rhino.Edward, the southern white rhino, experienced is first trot around the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center Monday.With his mom, Victoria, leading the way, Edward charged around the enclosure and even fit a mud bath into his busy schedule. It was the first time the mom and calf were released from the center's maternity yard and other off-exhibit areas.RELATED: Birth of baby rhino marks major milestone in effort to save critically endangered species“Victoria has been in the exhibit yard before but this was Edward’s first time,” said Jill Van Kempen, senior keeper at San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “The second they entered the exhibit, Victoria just took off, running laps, and it was so fun to see Edward running right along beside her. He was very energetic, sometimes breathing heavily, and even getting all four feet off the ground at times.”For about 30 minutes, the zoo says Edward and Victoria took advantage of the larger space by running around and stretching their legs.Edward was born 23 days ago, becoming the first southern white rhino calf born via artificial insemination in the country. Edward was born weighing about 148 pounds, but now weighs about 243 pounds. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Poway man at the center of a multimillion-dollar Ponzi scheme was sentenced Wednesday to 12 years in prison. Numerous victims spoke to Dougherty via video conferencing due to COVID-19 protocols.In a plea deal, Christopher Dougherty pleaded guilty to grand theft and securities fraud back in March. He also received a white-collar crime enhancement, according to the District Attorney’s office. Prosecutors say there were nearly 50 victims, many who were elderly.He originally faced more than 80 felony counts after his arrest in April 2019.Team 10 first spoke to several alleged victims of Dougherty early last year. They said he stole the money he was supposed to invest for them. Some of his victims met Dougherty through their jobs as educators while he worked as an investment advisor with various school districts.“The lessons we learned from you were beyond the academic acumen. They are about the dark side of life,” said victim Cheryl Biagi during victim impact statements Wednesday afternoon.Biagi said Dougherty not only took money from her, but also her niece and her 91-year-old mother who has since passed away.“We know you are guilty of so much more than securities fraud and grand theft, but we hope when you get out of prison, you make every effort to repay every dime to those people who believed in you,” Biagi said.Investigators said Dougherty offered victims investment opportunities in companies he owned, then used some of their funds for his personal expenses like home remodeling, travel, and college tuition.For the first time, Dougherty spoke about his crimes. He offered an apology that lasted roughly 17 seconds.“To everyone, I accept full responsibility for my actions. I want to sincerely apologize to you and your family members and I also want to let you know I did make a mistake and I will not do this in the future. I extremely apologize,” Dougherty said in court.It is an apology that falls short for many victims. Jerry and Diane Cole told Team 10 they lost more than .6 million in the scheme.“This wasn’t money that basically fell out of the sky to us. This was the product of 50 years of our married life together… of working, saving, putting away money,” Cole said.Cole said they have been able to survive, thanks to their children and close friends. They believe Dougherty has no remorse for his crimes.Although Dougherty is ordered to pay restitution, many victims are doubtful they will see their money again.Deputy District Attorney Michael Zachry called this case “extremely egregious.” Zachry said there was over million dollars taken in with million net loss to victims.“It’s more than just money. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Supreme Court ruling striking down the federal ban on sports betting opens the door to making it legal in California.Jeremy Lind stopped by this sports bar in Normal Heights for a little lunch and sports."I'm a Steelers fan myself, Go Steelers!" said Lind.Lind isn't shy about making bets with friends.  His appetite for bets could soon expand."That would definitely open up my betting curiosities I think," said Lind.'That' is the possibility sports betting becomes legal in California, now that the federal ban has been struck down.  The road to legal sports wagering requires a state constitutional amendment.  Both houses must pass a bill by two-third votes. A majority of voters must then approve it at the ballot box.  Proponents say sports gambling is already happening, including off-shore websites.  George Belch is the co-founder of SDSU's Sports MBA program."The main argument for this is: it's a reality and we need to recognize this and how to control it," said Belch.  The regulation would include consumer protections.  Supporters say taxpayers will win out.  Some estimates place revenues from sports betting between 0 and 0 million in annual tax revenues.  Belch says critics will point to sports gambling's impact on the integrity of amateur sports and gambling addictions.    "They will point out we don't want to make it easier people to bet.  It we facilitate it, it's simply not a good thing," said Belch.Belch says if sports betting becomes legal, you could see it at casinos, racetracks, online sites, even individual parlors. The California Nations Indian Gaming Association issued the following statement: "...we would advise the state to move slowly and cautiously and examine all angles as it relates to sports betting.  As the state of California weighs the decision of whether to allow for the practice of sports wagering, we firmly ask that tribes have a place at the table in any and all discussions surrounding this issue.  We also want to make very clear that California voters have, on numerous occasions, confirmed the exclusive right of California tribal governments to operate casino-style games.  Legalization of sports betting should not become a back-door way to infringe upon that exclusivity.  A strong, well-regulated gaming industry is of utmost importance to California’s tribal governments and the public. Protecting the integrity of the gaming industry protects California and is our true North Star that guides all of our stances and decisions ..."To get on the November ballot, both houses would have to approve it by late June.  One Assembly source tells 10news that's unlikely, with a more likely date being November 2020. 2806
