UNION COUNTY, Ind. -- A recently approved medical device is tiny, but mighty in the fight against opioid abuse. The NSS-2 Bridge, a battery-powered device similar to a hearing aid, was created by Indiana-based Innovative Health Solutions. It helps reduce symptoms associated with opioid withdrawal, such as nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain and anxiety. It is worn behind the ear for five days at a time, sending electrical pulses to the brain. It’s the first FDA-approved device for use in helping to reduce the symptoms of opioid withdrawal, which is key because most addicts return to drugs to alleviate the pain from those symptoms.Kaylin Fairchild, 26, is living proof that the device can help. Nearly three years ago, heroin held her hostage. She overdosed while her son was in the backseat and it took four shots of Narcan to bring her back. To make things worse, she found her mother dead of a drug overdose in 2015.Rock bottom hit when the state took custody of her son for several months.But a new program at the Union County Health Department stepped in with hope."I thought they were full of (it)," Fairchild said. "I thought it was a bunch of talk. What is this little device, how's it going to make me feel any better?"Kaylin now has custody of her son and attends group meetings with the help of the device.Tom Schulte, who took painkillers because of knee injuries, says The Bridge helped him get to a life where he's no longer dependent on pills. "I couldn't hold a job," Schulte said. "I couldn't function without them."He is now doing well and is focused on landscaping jobs. Uber and Lyft are pushing a proposition this November they say is vital to their survival in California.And the ads are already starting. At issue is Proposition 22, which would carve an exemption into state law to allow the rideshare companies to continue employing drivers as independent contractors. Otherwise, they would have to reclassify the drivers as employees, guaranteeing them a swath of rights and protections, as mandated by Assembly Bill 5, which the state passed in 2019. Prop 22 would allow the rideshare companies to continue employing drivers as independent contractors, but guarantees them a minimum pay and also money for health insurance once they work a certain number of hours. "I only do this because it fits my lifestyle and what I do," said Chelsea Scott, a San Diego musician who drives for Uber and Lyft. "We're not getting benefits. We don't get any of those things, and I knew that coming into this. This wasn't a trick of any kind."Uber, Lyft, and Doordash released a new 30-second television ad that makes claims about the timing and impact of the law. First, it says California politicians passed AB 5 amid skyrocketing unemployment. Truth be told, the bill was signed into law in September 2019, before the coronavirus was even discovered. At the time, the state's unemployment rate was 4.2%. In August, it was 13.3%.However, the ad follows that with a key point, under AB 5, it will be illegal for rideshare drivers to operate as independent contractors in California. The narrator says that is "threatening to shut down rideshare and food delivery services." Truth be told, AB 5 does not shut down the services, but the services themselves could make the decision to shut down, which Uber and Lyft threatened to do in California last month after a court decision did not go in their favor. San Diego employment attorney Dan Eaton says overall the core point of the ad stands that jobs could be cut."They're saying, 'All right, fine, don't do this, but then don't complain when Uber and Lyft pull out of California,'" he said. The ad says Prop 22 "protects" drivers' abilities to work as independent contractors and saves critical jobs. TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. (KGTV) - Hundreds of active duty service members and family members attended a memorial this Wednesday for a medic who mysteriously died this summer on a Southern California military base.Team 10 investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner first broke the story a few weeks ago when 10News reported that he may have been killed by someone else. It’s been three months since HM3 Michael Vincent de Leon died but investigators still won’t release details on his death. He was a Navy corpsman, which is a medic, stationed at the Twentynine Palms Marine base in San Bernardino County.At the memorial service, rubber duckies were handed out to attendees. Ducks were Michael’s favorite type animal. "Michael was special. He thought that life was water and whatever life would throw at him, he was going to act like the duck and the water would fall right off," says Corpsman Michael Joseph Navarro. “If you needed something, he was there in a heartbeat,” explains former Corpsman Benjamin Clark. He and wife Lisa were some of Michael’s closest friends, yet they're nowhere near understanding his sudden death in August.Clark adds, “To this day, we [still] don't know a whole lot.” “I've been to memorials and I've always seen [them] through the viewfinder. Today, I was front row,” says Jose de Leon, Michael’s father. Jose is a former news photojournalist. He and the rest of the immediate family flew in from Texas for the memorial. 10News spoke with Jose via video chat last month. He had contacted 10News for help after claiming that the military stonewalled him from getting answers about his son's death. 10News learned from a source with close military ties that the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) confirmed that Michael's death was being investigated as a homicide. It's a very different story than what the family says they were led to believe in the hours just after the death, when they say the word "suicide" came up from service members on base. After digging for information, Jose says he spoke to a service member who is close to the case. “I begged him, ‘Just tell me, did Michael pull the trigger or did someone else? There was a long pause and [then he said], ‘Mr. de Leon, someone else pulled the trigger,’” he explains.He says other service members who knew Michael said he was shot on base at another corpsman's going-away party in the military housing area. Days went by until, he says, an NCIS agent told him there was, in fact, a shooting on the base at a housing unit and other corpsmen were present.“We're not a vengeful family. (AP) — Kanye West's petition to appear on New Jersey's ballot as a presidential candidate fails to pass legal muster because signatures are incomplete, and in some cases appear written in the same hand. That's according to a formal complaint filed with the state on Wednesday by election law attorney Scott Salmon. Salmon, a Democrat, filed the objection with the state Division of Elections after reviewing the more than 1,300 signatures West submitted. New Jersey requires presidential candidates to get 800 signatures to appear on the ballot, but Salmon says he counted more than 600 that were in some way defective. Tyson Foods may lay off more than 400 workers in the South Bay in an effort to become more efficient and save money.It would be the biggest layoff in San Diego County in more than a year.The company filed a layoff notice with the state this month saying it had to let 401 workers go from its Circle Foods label plant in Otay Mesa. "Tyson Foods, Inc. regrets that its team members at the San Diego, California facility must be permanently displaced yet hopes to accomplish this plant closing with the least possible disruption of lives of the tema members, their families, and the community," the notice says.Many of the workers make Mexican frozen food on the factory's assemblyline.A team from the San Diego Workforce Partnership has already been to the factory twice to help the workers find new opportunities. Also, Windsor Foods is buying Tyson's plant to expand its Mexican frozen food offerings. While it does plan to eliminate three tortilla lines, company VIce President Paul Taylor said the Windsor hopes to keep as many of the workers as possible.Andy Hall, chief operating officer of the San Diego Workforce Partnership, said he doesn't see the layoffs as a larger trend. After all, the unemployment rate is now near a 17-year-low of 3.3 percent. The layoffs are expected to occur by the end of April. Tyson in a statement said it is working on a transition plan with Windsor Foods, but will retain some operations here.
