In just the past two days, two young athletes have been rushed to the hospital during sports practice. Just outside of Dallas, a 13-year-old student collapsed at football practice and later died. In Pennsylvania, a teen remains in coma after suffering a serious head injury.  The NOW¡¯s investigative reporter Jace Larson obtained a new state-by-state ranking, showing how well states do at preventing and reducing the number of children who have a sudden emergency, while playing middle and high school sports.Samantha Scarneo headed up the study, which ranks how well states protect youth athletes. In recent days, several coronavirus outbreaks among teams and athletes have demonstrated the enormous challenge ahead for sports leagues attempting to return to action.While non-contact individual sports like NASCAR and golf have been able to resume, many other sports are struggling to formalize plans to return to play. Other than the NFL, which is in its offseason, only one of the five other major sports leagues have a firm return date.Professional soccer¡¯s MLS is slated to resume on July 8 with a tournament being played in Orlando. For professional baseball, hockey and basketball, a resumption of play is still up in the air. The NBA said it plans to resume play in Orlando at some point later in the summer. The NHL is determining two host cities to conduct an expanded postseason. MLB said late Monday that it will require players to accept health and safety protocols before resuming play.But the road to resuming play could contain land mines. Here are a few examples:- The Orlando Pride women¡¯s soccer team, which recently resumed training camp, announced it will not participate in an upcoming tournament after six players tested positive for the coronavirus.- The Basketball Tournament, which is a summer basketball tournament featuring former college and international stars, announced Monday one of its teams withdrew from next month¡¯s next competition after a player tested positive for the virus.- Tennis stars Grigor Dimitrov and Borna Coric both tested positive for the coronavirus after participating in a charity tennis tournament organized by Novak Djokovic. The Adria Tour canceled its final match in Croatia on Sunday after Dimitrov¡¯s diagnosis. Djokovic and the tournament as a whole have come under fire for flouting social distancing norms.- A number of college football teams have reported outbreaks. Clemson had 23 players test positive, and Kansas State said it had 13 positive tests for the virus. College football teams began allowing voluntary workouts on campus earlier this month.Last week, Dr. Anthony Fauci placed skepticism on whether the NFL season would even be played."Unless players are essentially in a bubble -- insulated from the community and they are tested nearly every day -- it would be very hard to see how football is able to be played this fall," Dr. Fauci told CNN. "If there is a second wave, which is certainly a possibility and which would be complicated by the predictable flu season, football may not happen this year."Leagues such as the NFL have said they are putting together plans which are heavily reliant on frequent testing of players and staff. Plans also rely on limiting the number of people who interact with team personnel at games and practices.But relying on frequent testing in lieu of social distancing also has its drawbacks, which include a large number of false negatives. 2861

In post-Brexit Britain, trips to the European Union will get a little more expensive for millions of Brits in search of a continental break.The European Commission confirmed on Friday that UK travelers will be required fill out an online form and cough up €7 (.90) for visa-free travel, which will be valid for three years.Natasha Bertaud, a spokeswoman for the commission's President Jean-Claude Juncker, likened the "simple form" to the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) scheme used by the United States -- which requires travelers to pay to apply for permission to enter the country.She also pointed out that the EU's version, called ETIAS, will be "way cheaper."But this all comes with a major caveat. If the UK crashes out of the EU with no agreement in place, Brits will be required to get a visa to travel to the EU, a commission spokeswoman told Reuters on Friday.ETIAS, which is expected to come into force in 2021, will apply to countries outside the EU whose citizens can currently travel in Europe visa free. There are currently 61 such countries, including the United States, Israel and Singapore.It will cover the so-called Schengen group of 26 European countries that share largely open land borders.The electronic visa waiver system was conceived to "identify any security or irregular migratory risks posed by visa-exempt visitors traveling to the Schengen area while at the same time facilitate crossing frontiers for the vast majority of travelers who do not pose such risks,"?according to the commission. 1554

INDIANAPOLIS ¡ª A video of a student taunting a player with epilepsy at an Indiana high school basketball game Friday night has gone viral on social media.During the match between Center Grove High School and Cathedral High School, James Franklin Jr. was taking a free throw shot when a kid fell on the floor and started shaking like he was having a seizure, James Franklin Jr.'s mom, Tamieka Franklin, said. "To see that last night [Friday] was totally disgusting," Tamieka Franklin said. It will perhaps be the biggest story in December as well as the upcoming months. When will vaccine distribution be available to you or your family? Recent news from Pfizer and Moderna is making vaccine distribution a reality in the near future. So what should you know? KEY FDA MEETINGS The first key date is December 10. That is when the FDA will hold a hearing on Pfizer's vaccine. Moderna's vaccine will get a hearing on December 17. The hearings are being conducted by the ¡°Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee,¡± and they could give approval within 72 hours of the first hearing taking place. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER FDA APPROVAL After FDA gives the go ahead, the CDC will finalize who should get it first. The good news is that the CDC have already released who they think should be first in line. Earlier this week, an advisory committee to the CDC recommended health care workers and those in nursing homes receive access almost immediately. Ultimately though, governors will serve as "air traffic controllers" directing which specific facility has access to the first doses of vaccines. If the current timeline holds, those orders could start going out on December 11 or December 12. AVERAGE AMERICANS TIMELINE AND POTENTIAL ISSUES If you are not deemed a high priority, it will still likely be months before you are able to get a vaccine. Some analysis point to Februrary, but other analysis point to April or May. Some potential issues for distribution include the temperature the vaccines must be stored at. The Moderna vaccine can stay in traditional refrigerators at around 40 degrees or so but Pfizer's must be stored at -94 degrees, which may be trickier to transport in more rural parts of the country. Another big question mark is will Americans actually want to be the first to take the vaccine? "All the science in the world isn¡¯t going to matter if you can¡¯t people to be immunized against COVID," Dr. John Brownstein of Boston Children's Hospital said. Former Presidents George W.
