SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A small San Diego biotech is trying to give face masks an added layer of defense by spraying the liner with a biological bait designed to be a mousetrap for the coronavirus.AXIM Biotechnologies is also developing a next-generation rapid antibody test that the company says is the first of its kind to detect “neutralizing antibodies.” The neutralizing antibody test should be available for sale in the next few weeks, said CEO John Huemoeller.Both the test and the surgical mask are based on the same technology: a synthetic protein AXIM created that mimics ACE2.ACE2 is a receptor protein found in your body on the surface of cells. The coronavirus likes to bind to it to infiltrate cells, so the company decided to coat the inner lining of a surgical mask with the protein as an added barrier.“They lock to each other just like they do in your body. They lock on the mask. So when we spray the mask with that virus-binding protein, it's there permanently. It can be washed. It's not coming off,” Huemoeller said.“That's the whole idea is to get [the virus] to bind to something, so it cannot go into your respiratory system,” he added.AXIM’s mask is still a ways off from hitting the market. Huemoeller said it needs to undergo further testing to get FDA approval and the company is still looking for a manufacturing partner. The company is hoping to release the enhanced mask by the middle of next year.“We’re hoping that maybe [the FDA will] steamline it because this is something that can save lives,” Huemoeller said.With fewer than 10 scientists, AXIM is a small biotech based in Sorrento Valley. But the company thinks it's poised to be at the center of the second wave of antibody tests for so-called neutralizing antibodies.“When the FDA got our application they didn't know what neutralizing antibodies were. And now everybody's talking about neutralizing antibodies,” said Huemoeller.Not all antibodies function the same. Some antibodies bind to the virus but still allow the pathogen to infiltrate cells. Other antibodies, called neutralizing antibodies, bind to the virus and actually prevent further infection.AXIM’s lateral flow assay antibody test, dubbed Tru-19, takes a drop of blood and can return results in 10 minutes to determine if someone has neutralizing antibodies, according to Huemoeller.In addition to uses at doctors’ offices, the company said the test would have immediate applications at labs processing convalescent plasma.Since as many as one-third of people who recover from COVID-19 do not produce neutralizing antibodies, Huemoeller said the test could help determine which patients would be optimal candidates to donate plasma. 2693

Since then, Nguyen quit her job, and their business blossomed. They went from having twenty deliveries to now more than 120 in a week. They hired more staff and outgrew their space almost immediately."We needed to figure out a spatial solution so that we can continue to grow," Nguyen said.Their solution was Warden's father's backyard in Encinitas, specifically their chicken coop. Warden and his father renovated the 300 square foot space to have a greenhouse and an office. It is not your typical warehouse, but they say it is perfect."It's like working with what you have and being able to pivot and do whatever it takes to take your business to the next step," Nguyen said.They say it is this kind of ingenuity, a loving family, and loyal customers that keep them focused. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego man was arrested Saturday after allegedly assaulting an elderly woman at a Central Coast beach parking lot in San Luis Obispo, law officials said.Morro Bay Police Officers responded to a disturbance call at around 1 p.m. at the Morro Rock parking lot on Coleman Drive, authorities said.Witnesses told officers that the suspect assaulted an elderly woman and knocked her to the ground. Numerous people witnessed the attack and went to help the victim, according to police.Officials said the woman was treated by first responders for moderate injuries.In a press release, officials said Brian Robert Sprinkle, 39, of La Jolla, "was participating in a surf competition when he exited the water and assaulted the woman without provocation."Sprinkle was booked in the San Luis Obispo County Jail on felony charges of elder abuse and battery, according to Morro Bay police.Officers also found a firearm with Sprinkle's property and seized it.It is believed the suspect was under the influence of marijuana and hallucinogenic drugs, police said in a statement.Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Morro Bay Police Department (805) 772-6225.While police say Sprinkle was taking part in the Big, Bad and Ugly surf competition, surf contest organizers tell KSBY News he was not registered with the contest and is not affiliated with any of the surf clubs that participated.ABC 10News affiliate KSBY News contributed to this report. 1497

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A woman broke her thigh bone after she was riding on a motorized scooter and lost control in downtown San Diego Friday.The 65-year-old woman was riding a Bird scooter just before 2 p.m. in the Embarcadero area, according to San Diego Police. Her family members were also riding scooters with her.For some reason, police say the woman lost control of the scooter and overturned. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A University of San Diego professor has been suspended from campus over alleged misconduct, the university confirmed to 10News.The professor's behavior reportedly violated the university's policy and "is antithetical to our mission and values," the university said in part. The professor was not named.USD officials are currently investigating the incident. The school said in a statement:"We are in the process of investigating the complaint. Our commitment to protecting employee privacy restricts our ability to share names or details of the incident.
