SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A sailboat caught fire Sunday around 2:45 p.m. at Shelter Cove Marina, witnesses say a lithium battery in the navigation panel started the blaze."Saw the smoke, thought it was a barbecue then the kids started screaming on the dock and saw the black smoke and knew it was time to react," Boater and Witness Charlie Colson said. He said he grabbed a hose and was helping the father who was on the boat when the fire started. Getting a boat fire put out quickly is crucial, Witness and Boater Murad Abel said. "There's a lot of electrical equipment, you have batteries, you have fuel, propane, it's all probably within 10 feet of each other," he said.Colson said they had it under control by the time firefighters made it to the scene. "The nine minutes probably seemed like 27 to me, because I was putting the fire out, and I wanted some help, I wanted a professional there," He said chuckling.He said the family had just moved onto the boat last week. Both confirmed the family has a special needs son, adored by the community. "You could literally come back 2 hours later and he's still fishing trying to get fish off the back of the boat, so he's very diligent in that," Abel said.They're hoping insurance covers the damage. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diegan who was killed in the mass shooting at the Borderline Bar was honored Thursday on the anniversary of the attack, both in Coronado and Thousand Oaks.Justin Meek's family attended a large public dedication ceremony for the Healing Garden in Thousand Oaks, a park and permanent memorial site with 12 stone slabs representing the victims."It's not that we are moving on, but that we are moving forward," Meek's father Roger said in an interview.RELATED: Coronado native among victims of the Thousand Oaks bar shootingMeek, a promoter and occasional security guard at the bar, broke out windows so others could escape when gunfire erupted last November, according to family members. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego man has made it his mission to lift up young people through sports. Gordon Brown is our LEAD San Diego Leadership Award winner for December. He’s a mentor for inner-city golfers, a sport often seen as a past-time for the 1 percent. “I played golf across the street from my house from where we lived, on the school ground. It was five of, three of us, that used one golf club,” said Brown. From those humble beginnings in South Carolina, Brown forged a career in professional golf that eventually led him to San Diego. In 1973, he started helping disadvantaged kids learn the game. "What golf teaches to the kids that we've raised through the San Diego inner City Junior Golf Foundation is honor, dignity respect, etiquette, and truly wanting to do something better with their lives.” Brown estimates he has worked with thousands of kids over the years. He may not remember them all, but they remember his patience, skill, and generosity through the San Diego Inner-City Junior Golf Foundation. 1032

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local group is teaming up with a non-profit organization to help fight the unemployment rates among young adults in San Diego. Casa Familia came up with the idea to start a coffee cart, training teenagers and 20-year-olds in different skills to run the coffee business. San Ysidro Health Center jumped on board to help with the funding of the project. Ana Melgoza is the Vice President of General Affairs for San Ysidro Health Center. She tells 10News it was an obvious decision."We said 'yes, of course' as soon as Casa Familia approached us with this wonderful and innovative endeavor," Melgoza said.El K-Fe hired six baristas, graduates of Casa Familiar's youth barista training program. The ,000 coffee cart now sits in the central hub of the health center. The baristas and managers are all young adults who have gone through many months of training. Francisco Dominguez is a student at Southwestern College and among the first to join the project."It’s kind of giving hope to the youth that think that they don't have a chance. They have a chance; we all have a chance. I started out like them now I'm looking forward to what the future has and what I can do with this and what we can do as a team," said Dominguez.Dominguez said the project is beneficial for many reasons but mostly for the skills learned at such a young age."Most jobs are 18 and older, so with this internship, it's 14 and older; so high school students: sophomores, freshmen, juniors, seniors in high school, can join the program, can get that job experience they need so once they graduate, they can get that job."The plan is to reinvest proceeds from the first El K-Fe coffee cart to establish more carts and create more youth job and training opportunities.  1820

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A large crowd held a rally against a reopening rollback and another indoor closure Tuesday.The rally took place outside the steps of the County Administration building around 4 pm.The County has been on the cusp of moving into the most restrictive tier in the Governor's safe reopening plan. If that happens, many businesses would be required to close their indoor operations.Many at the rally pushed for local control. They say local leaders should be able to call the shots to reopen their communities safely.County Board Vice-Chair Jim Desmond spoke at the rally.The Board held a special meeting and closed session Monday evening.Board Chairman Greg Cox released the following statement after the meeting:"Tonight, our Board of Supervisors met in a special closed session and discussed our legal options regarding the State's reopening criteria and the effect on local businesses and schools. The Board did not vote on any actions. We will continue to work with the State to make sure the metrics accurately reflect the underlying dynamics of the pandemic in San Diego County. The Board will meet again tomorrow at 3:00 pm to provide an update to the public." 1189
