The suicide rate for transgender men and women is among the highest of any group in the country. Now, there’s a new resource to help bring down those numbers. It’s a rare kind of safe space in a town that’s been LGBTQ friendly for decades.“I knew that physically I was in the wrong body,” Angelina Love said. Love was born male. She started transitioning to female as a teenager and said she got into heavy drug use to deal with her mixed emotions.“I was going through about an eight ball of cocaine a day,” Love said. “I was also abusing my pain medication.”Now, five years sober, Love said she’s finally found a safe space in the Southern California desert.“If it wasn’t for the Transgender Health and Wellness Center, I don’t think that I would physically be alive today,” she said. The USPS is honoring military dogs with its newest set of forever stamps. The four new stamp designs each features a different dog breed that represents the most common military dogs — a German shepherd, a labrador retriever, a Belgian malinois and a Dutch shepherd.According to a press release from the USPS, dozen of dog breeds have been used by all branches of the military. Dogs have served and aided soldiers in all American wars dating back to World War I.The dogs were hand-sketched by artists at DKNG studios before being colorized in Adobe Illustrator. The design of the stamps is credited to USPS Art Director Greg Breeding. The stamps went on sale Thursday. A 20-stamp book costs and can be used forever. 729

The owner of Schick razors needs to close the gap with Gillette, its biggest rival. So it's turning to new blood to make that happen.Edgewell Personal Care is buying the upstart razor maker Harry's, the two companies announced Thursday. The deal values Harry's at nearly .4 billion.Harry's started in 2013 and quickly expanded by selling low-priced razors online. Edgewell, meanwhile, owns some of the most established brands in the field — including Schick, which started in 1921. Edgewell also owns Wilkinson Sword, a major European brand that has been making razors since 1898.But Edgewell trails its main rival, Gillette, by a large margin. Gillette is a unit of Procter & Gamble, and accounted for about 10% of that company's .8 billion in revenue — about billion — last year. By comparison, Edgewell reported .2 billion in revenue during its most recent fiscal year.Sales for the first six months of this year fell 7% compared to a year earlier, Edgewell reported Thursday. But CEO Rod Little told investors that the company expects revenue to rise to .7 billion in its first full fiscal year after it acquires Harry's. The deal is expected to close early next year.Little said Edgewell was drawn to Harry's success with building a brand and marketing directly to consumers."We've been talking about it for a while," he said on an earnings call. "And when you look at what Harry's has done, we've looked at that from afar for a long time," he told investors."The deal also could help Harry's cut costs. Despite its success, Little said the business is only approaching the breakeven point this year.Investors didn't immediately embrace the purchase. Shares of Edgewell fell nearly 13% in midday trading Thursday.Harry's founders Andy Katz-Mayfield and Jeff Raider will stay on to run the combined companies' US business. Raider was also one of the founders of the eyeglass maker Warby Parker. The two of them had been friends since college.Harry's is not the first razor startup to be acquired by a more established company. In 2016, Unilever bought 2083

Three high school students in Martin County are recovering after investigators say they overdosed at two schools Tuesday and had to be hospitalized. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said the students smoked THC vape pens that were laced with an unknown substance, possibly a narcotic. Now, investigators hope to determine how the students got their hands on the laced vape pens in the first place, whether they created the concoction themselves, or if they obtained the pens from a mutual source.Martin County Schools Superintendent Laurie Gaylord called parents Tuesday afternoon to warn them of the discovery of students using vape pens on school campuses. The message said in part, "The sheriff’s office believes there is a likelihood that more students may come to be in possession of the pens and may inhale or ingest the toxins in the future.”Just after noon on Tuesday, Lt. Ryan Grimsdale said deputies were notified that a female student at South Fork High School was having a medical emergency.“It was relayed to us that they were having a seizure," Grimsdale said.Within a couple hours of that call, Grimsdale said a female and a male student at Martin County High School also had medical issues, not as severe as the one reported at South Fork High School, but at least one of the students was also going in and out of consciousness.“The symptoms were similar, but not as severe. Upset stomach and things of that nature.”Grimsdale said this is the first time he has heard of the laced vape pens making their way into local schools. He says the issue as a whole of vape pens being used to ingest harmful or illegal substances is becoming a statewide issue.“What we’re looking at now actually statewide is an epidemic where these have become the primary method for consumption of illegal substances,” Grimsdale said. Miami is seeing the worst of it, according to Grimsdale.Martin County High School parent Deborah Pelletier was concerned after getting the call from the school.“We have to look out for each other. These are not good times,” said Pelletier. She said she will be taking the advice provided by the school.“We’re going to discuss it with my granddaughter here, I am also her guardian, and I’m not quite sure what to make of it yet.”Grimsdale also offers the following advice to parents: "Be involved. Pay attention. These vape pens, if you don’t know what they are look them up. Know what they look like and what to look for. Go through their book bags, look through their rooms to be actively involved, educated and informed. Pay attention.”"Kids are supposed to go to school and sitting in classrooms being educated and getting yelled at for running down the hallway. They’re not supposed to be getting transported out by ambulance because of a drug overdose,” Grimsdale said. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said about 100 citations have been written for students who have brought vape pens to school this school year. None of those citations indicate the vape pens were laced with anything illicit. Multiple Martin County students overdosed today on vape pens mixed with another dangerous substance. 3138
