SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities responded Wednesday after a car slammed into the side of a motel in Point Loma.According to firefighters, the crash happened on the 1300 block of Scott Street at the Vagabond Inn San Diego Airport Marina.The driver was parked in the Point Loma Seafood parking lot when she reportedly hit the gas, driving through a fence and smashing into the side of the motel.The crash created a hole in a bathroom of one of the motel rooms. No one was injured in the crash. 499

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities responded to a riot Friday night at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in Otay Mesa that left five people injured, including at least one with serious injuries.Cal Fire San Diego said about 100 inmates were in the prison yard when a fight broke out around 8 p.m. California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said Saturday that number was closer to 80 inmates.CDCR said officers gave multiple orders to stop fighting, before using several rounds of less-than-lethal force to stop the incident.Four inmate-made weapons were recovered, CDCR said.Five inmates were injured and had to be transported outside the prison for treatment, for injuries including puncture wounds, cuts, and bruises to the head, neck, and torso areas, CDCR says. Cal Fire had previously reported that six inmates were transferred from the scene.One of those inmates suffering from puncture wounds was in critical condition. Three inmates were in fair condition and the fifth was treated and returned to prison, CDCR said.No prison staff members were injured.The facility canceled visitation for Facility A Saturday and Sunday in light of the riot. 1175

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Crews were quick to knock down a fire along a San Diego freeway late Friday.Video showed captured at the scene show a tree engulfed in flames along the westbound side of State Route 94 near northbound Interstate 5 at about 6:30 p.m.It's not clear how the fire began, but crews were quick to douse the flames.10NEWS?UPDATING TRAFFIC CONDITIONSNo injuries have been reported. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As San Diego grapples with a homeless epidemic and rising rents, the city's housing supply remains a point of worry.According to the San Diego Housing Commission, the city twice the shortfall in housing than previously estimated. A 2017 report by the SDHC said the region could fall behind its goals by 50,000 units if housing supply followed the current production trend.By 2028, the organization estimated San Diego's housing needs would reach 150,000 to 200,000 units.RELATED: Under-utilized MTS land could be used for affordable housing, report saysThere is a silver lining, however. SDHC says San Diego has enough housing potential to meet its 10-year need if "all capacity sources are fully utilized," and could exceed that need by 30,000 units.Where are these potential sources of land? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Bike the Bay celebrated its 11th annual ride on Sunday but this year it added some safety changes. Roughly 3,000 people participated in the popular bike ride. The ride is 25 miles and takes cyclists over the Coronado Bridge, through Coronado, Imperial Beach, Chula Vista and National City. It's the only day of the year where bikes are allowed on the iconic bridge. This year, the event made some changes after an accident during the ride last year. Christina Rocheleau who was not participating in the ride collided head-on with a participant who was trying to pass cyclists along the trail. Rocheleau suffered a fractured nose and three fractured vertebrae. She hasn't been on a bike since. At the time of the accident, organizers told us that they take safety very seriously. This year, they added more signs along the route, more volunteers to guide cyclists and made the route all one-way. All of the proceeds for the ride go towards the San Diego County Bike Coalition, an organization that promotes bicycles as a form of transportation and advocates for safer roads for cyclists.   1156
