SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 74-year-old woman was pinned between a U-Haul van and a retaining wall after chasing after the runaway van in Valencia Park.After exiting the van Saturday at about 7:30 a.m., the woman failed to set the parking brake, San Diego Police said. As the van started rolling northbound on Valencia Parkway, the woman gave chase.She was re-entering the vehicle when it veered to the left, struck a fire hydrant, a retaining wall, and another vehicle, police say, pinning the woman between the van and the wall.The woman suffered non life-threatening injuries, including a fractured pelvis.SDPD Traffic Officers were investigating the incident Saturday. 673

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A ceremony was held Wednesday to honor San Diego County law enforcement officers who were killed in the line of duty.87 names were read at noon at the memorial wall at the County Administration Building in downtown San Diego.The fallen law enforcement officers named date back to 1850, and they include San Diego police Officer Jonathan “JD” De Guzman, who was killed in the line of duty in 2016.“They did it because they loved it. They did it because they cared, and it’s just so important that those people, the survivors, know that the citizens appreciate what they did,” said Skip Murphy with the San Diego County Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation.The public joined the memorial on the northwest lawn of the County Administration Building and quietly paid respects.The San Diego Police Department is also holding a memorial ceremony Thursday morning. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The unemployment rate in the San Diego-Carlsbad Metropolitan Statistical Area dropped to 7.7% in October, a drop of 1.2% from September, according to figures released Friday by the state Employment Development Department.According to the EDD, total non-farm employment in San Diego County increased by 21,500 jobs month-over-month -- from 1,386,600 to 1,408,100 -- while farm employment contracted from 9,600 to 9,500.The unemployment rate at this time last year was 3%. The region lost 106,500 non-farm jobs and 400 agricultural jobs over the year.The region's unemployment rate rose to 15% in May during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to EDD data, while data from the San Diego Association of Governments showed rates of nearly 30% unemployment in May.In September, the state's unemployment rate dropped to 9% from 10.8% the previous month, and the nation's decreased to 6.6% from 7.7%.Professional and business services led all industry sectors in month- over-month job gains at 5,200. The majority of job gains were centered in professional, scientific and technical services -- up 3,400 -- while 1,000 jobs were posted in scientific, research and developmental services.Government jobs grew by 4,300, with 2,700 in local and 2,500 in state government gains. The federal government lost 900 jobs locally.Six other industries posted month-over-month job gains: Construction gained 4,100; educational and health services 3,700; leisure and hospitality 3,200; trade, transportation and utilities 900; financial activities 600; and information 100.Mining and logging employment levels remained unchanged.The two industries to lose jobs in October were other services -- down 400 -- and manufacturing -- down 200.Comparing year-over-year, leisure and hospitality continue to top the list in jobs lost, with a total of 47,900 jobs lost since last October -- 35,200 of which came in accommodation and food services.Since the same time last year, government lost 17,100 jobs; trade, transportation and utilities 13,800; other services 10,500; educational and health services 10,000; and manufacturing 6,500; financial activities 3,800; and information 3,400.Professional and business services gained 4,300 new jobs and construction grew payrolls by 2,200 year-over-year. 2294

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former Yuma Police officer testified Tuesday in his trial for the rape of a woman in Kensington.Jared Elkins, 34, raped his wife’s cousin after a family gathering at her home on Marlborough Drive last year, prosecutors said. The group had been out to dinner, then watched a movie while drinking beer and wine at home.She testified last week, saying she didn’t yell during the alleged attack because Elkins threatened to kill her. His wife was asleep across the hall at the time.After the encounter, the woman said she ran into her mother’s room for help, and they both escaped out a window.At a hospital, the alleged victim's blood-alcohol level was determined to be .09 percent, according to witness testimony.Police said Elkins told them that the sex was consensual and the rape charges were made out of guilt.Elkins told the jury the alleged victim started flirting with him after everyone else went to sleep.“There was mutual flirtations between the two of us and we were being adults,” said Elkins, who testified the woman was “cuddling, almost snuggling” with him.“She said yeah, it was surprising to me; I was excited a younger attractive woman, you know, it kind of confirmed everything on the couch,” Elkins said.Elkins resigned from the Yuma Police Department in 2017. He is facing nine felony counts including forcible rape and could serve 14 years in prison if convicted.City News Service contributed to this report. 1462

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 37-year-old man was arrested and booked after trying to snatch a toddler from their parent's car outside of a Costco in Vista, according to San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.The incident happened just before 3 p.m. in the parking lot of the store located at 1755 Hacienda Drive.Sheriff's Sgt. Nanette McMasters said a woman, her fiancée, and their two small children were backing out of a parking stall when the suspect opened the rear vehicle door. The suspect attempted to remove the 2-year-old child from the car.The child's parents got out of the car and confronted the suspect, identified as Adam Glavinic."The incident drew a crowd and a physical confrontation occurred between the father and Glavinic," said McMasters.An off-duty sheriff's employee and other witnesses intervened in the confrontation and held the suspect until two deputies from the Vista Sheriff's Station arrived on the scene.Glavinic was arrested for attempted kidnapping and being under the influence of a controlled substance. He was booked into the Vista Detention Facility, according to McMasters.It's unknown at this time if the toddler, the father, or the suspect suffered any injuries during the incident.The incident remains under investigation. 1265
