Gavin Newsom eased the sentences or criminal histories of nearly three dozen current or former felons on Tuesday.They include 10 pardons intended to aid immigrants who face the possibility of deportation.One of the 10 is currently in a federal immigration detention facility. ROSEMEAD (CNS) - Residents across Southern California were checking their homes and apartments this morning for any damage caused by a magnitude 4.5 earthquake that struck two miles south of Rosemead and was felt across a large portion of the region, including Orange County.The quake struck at 11:38 p.m. Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was in almost the same location as the magnitude 5.9Whittier Narrows earthquake in 1987, famed seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones said. ``Just like in '87, the earthquake is quite deep ... it's possibly on the same fault,'' Jones told NBC4 early Saturday morning.She later tweeted this quake ``is not considered an aftershock (to the Whittier Narrows quake) because the aftershocks died off completely in less than two years.''A pair of aftershocks, magnitudes 2.1 and 1.6, struck within 10 minutes of Friday's quake, Jones said.She said there is about a 5% chance this was a foreshock to a bigger earthquake.The Los Angeles Fire Department went into ``Earthquake Mode, with all 106 Neighborhood Fire Stations checking their areas for damage.''About 12:45 a.m., the department said it had completed its assessments. RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Authorities in California believe they’ve solved a 25-year-old cold case rape.The Riverside Police Department announced Friday that officers had apprehended 49-year-old Ralph Leslie Kroll in connection with the sexual assault of an 18-year-old woman in October 1995.Police say the victim was walking when she was attacked by a stranger, forced into a nearby apartment complex and assaulted.Investigative leads were exhausted and it remained a cold case until police say DNA evidence was able to identify Kroll as a suspect.After obtaining an arrest warrant for Kroll, police teamed up with the U.S. Marshals Service to locate and arrest him at his Eastvale home on Thursday. Kroll was then booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center on charges of rape by force, kidnapping, and the use of a deadly weapon by a sex offender. That's 70% more than previously estimated and a total that victims and police say includes dangerous criminals who should stay locked up. The earlier releases also are causing consternation as probation officers and community organizations scramble to provide housing, transportation and other services for inmates who may pose a public health risk because several hundred have been paroled while still contagious. RICHMOND, Va. — A Virginia judge has dissolved one injunction but imposed another preventing Virginia's governor from removing an enormous statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. The new 90-day injunction bars the statue’s removal from Richmond's Monument Avenue while claims in a lawsuit filed by a group of property owners are litigated. Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring has moved to dismiss the case, but the judge says the property owners have standing and could succeed on at least one of their claims. Gov.
