SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new study reveals the importance of having qualified athletic trainers available at high schools. One of the experts behind the study says he is shocked at how poor a job California does at regulating athletic safety."California is either dead last or next to last in all of these ratings of high school sports safety," according to Dr. Eric Post, an Assistant Professor at San Diego State University, who helped author the study.Robbie Bowers, trainer at Rancho Bernardo High School, says only about 60 percent of California schools have a certified trainer. With several sporting events and practices occurring for each school on any given day, it's nearly impossible even for schools with a trainer to have adequate coverage for all athletes.According to Post's research, that greatly increases the risks for student athletes who suffer an injury. "At schools with low athletic trainer availability, kids with a concussion were more likely to have that concussion go unidentified and also more likely to have that concussion be mismanaged as a result." Post adds that at schools with low trainer availability, an athlete with a concussion was often not treated until 24 hours after the injury. At schools with adequate trainer availability, athletes got initial treatment within 30 minutes.Bowers has backed previous efforts to create a statewide standard and certification; however, those legislative attempts have failed to pass. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A recent poll shows how residents of the 50th Congressional District are feeling a week after Darrell Issa entered the race. According to the poll, Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar is leading the race, followed by Republican Carl DeMaio and Republican Darrell Issa. Meanwhile, the poll is also an indication of how district residents feel about a number of issues, including impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump. To get the data, SurveyUSA interviewed 770 voting-age individuals in California’s 50th Congressional District between September 27 and October 2. Of the voting-age individuals surveyed, 671 are registered to vote in the state. 592 of those registered voters were likely to vote in the 2020 California Primary, SurveyUSA says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A judge has ruled that the government can continue waiving environmental laws to proceed with construction of a U.S.-Mexico border wall.Judge Gonzalo Curiel issued the ruling Tuesday afternoon. The ruling allows 14 miles of border wall to be built southeast of San Diego.The ruling comes one day after the Washington Post reported that President Trump will visit border wall prototypes in mid-March. In early February, ABC News reported that the Center for Biological Diversity filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to protect endangered butterflies. Environmentalists claim the Quino checkerspot butterfly and a number of other species could be in danger if construction of the border wall continues. California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said in a statement Tuesday afternoon that "A medieval wall along the U.S.-Mexico border simply does not belong in the 21st century.”Read the full statement below:“We remain unwavering in our belief that the Trump Administration is ignoring laws it doesn’t like in order to resuscitate a campaign talking point of building a wall on our southern border. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local World War II veteran who survived a battle with COVID-19 has died.In May, ABC 10News was there when loved ones, including daughter Lisa Hoover, welcomed home Ben Pack after a month in the ICU fighting COVID-19. He was among the oldest known survivors of the virus."It was one of the most emotional moments of my life," said Hoover.RELATED: 94-year-old El Cajon veteran who beat cancer, heart failure overcomes COVID-19At the age of 94, Pack had lived through a lifetime of survival stories. The World War II veteran survived tuberculosis, cancer, and congestive heart failure, but when he contracted COVID-19, his family prepared for the worst."There were days we thought it was over. We literally had our goodbye calls, and it was heartbreaking. What got him through this was his will to live and a fighting spirit, I guess," said Hoover.Even with that spirit, his battle with coronavirus took a toll. He lost 35 pounds and remained weak. In mid-October, while in his independent living apartment in Rancho San Diego, he fell and broke his hip. Surgery followed. He was 95, and he passed away on November 11, which was Veterans Day," said Hoover.Hoover says the timing of her father's death gave her family some solace."All felt it was a monumental day for him to pass. He felt so strong about serving. He lived a long, vibrant life. We are saddened about his loss, but good about the timing of it," said Hoover.Pack will be buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, his family is asking for donations to the Wounded Warrior Project. 1777

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A local non-profit is taking a page from online dating to help San Diegans match with a new career. It's more sophisticated than swiping left or right, and it can help anyone looking for a job or career change.It's called My Next Move. The San Diego Workforce Partnership released it after a yearlong effort. The highlight is a 60-question questionnaire that gauges a job seeker's interests. For each task, a job seeker will choose an option from "strongly disagree" to "strongly agree." Examples include investigating the start of a fire, repairing and replacing locks, or examining blood under a microscope.At the end, the system will provide a list of sectors that the best fit the job seeker, including local retraining programs, salary information, top hiring employers, and open jobs. "Think of it like Match.com for careers," said Sarah Burns, the partnership's director of research application. "Once you get a career match, it says okay, well if you want to take the next step in this relationship, then here's what you do."Burns said the system will give each test-taker a percentage matching their interests to the potential career. She said that could expose people to fields they did not know about.Additionally, the site has a list of 72 priority jobs in San Diego County, which the partnership says pay 90% of its workers at least per hour, and should grow by at least 6.5% annually. 1430
