SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County health officials reported Friday 11 hospitalizations due to vaping. Those who have been hospitalized range from 17 to 70 years old, according to County of San Diego Communications Specialist Tom Christensen. The illnesses come as U.S. health officials urge people to stop vaping until they can determine the cause of serious breathing illnesses. Symptoms include shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain and vomiting. Some 450 cases and as many as five deaths have been identified in 33 states, including California. However, many of those who were sickened said they had been vaping THC. There's been a split among public health experts about the value of vaping nicotine. Some argue e-cigarettes are not as lethal as conventional cigarettes and can be a valuable aide to smokers trying to kick the habit But others say studies have not established that adult smokers who try vaping end up quitting smoking long term. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego firefighters found themselves in an unusual position Thursday, battling flames inside a city water tower. The fire broke out as crews were demolishing the tower on federal property in Point Loma. Officials said some of the materials the demolition team was using to cut the tank apart caught the scaffolding on fire. “The wind today drove that fire and blew it very quickly,” a firefighter told 10News. With much of the tower covered in plastic, firefighters had to go inside, climbing through scaffolding with their hoses. “The potential for three rescues and the hook and ladder trucks out here, I thought maybe this is a serious event but they seem to have it completely under control,” said neighbor Casey Schnoor. Firefighters spent the afternoon hosing down the rest of the tower as a precaution. 839

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Gas and Electric is warning more than 88,000 customers of a possible multi-day power shutoff due to Santa Ana Winds.According to the company, the public safety power shutoff could happen as early as Wednesday night or Thursday morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Metropolitan Transit System officials say ridership spiked in the first quarter of the 2020 fiscal year by more than a million trips compared to the same time last year.From July through September of 2019, 22,258,345 trips were taken on an MTS trolley or bus. In 2018, MTS saw 21,313,801 trips. It's a 4.4% rise from one year to the next."It's encouraging," says MTS Chair Nathan Fletcher.MTS officials say a heavy focus on investment over the past few years is starting to pay off. They recently completed a million plan to streamline services and add frequency to many bus routes. They also added the South Bay Rapid route from Otay Mesa to Downtown and expanded the Rapid Superloop service in the University City area."As we add those services where folks want them, as we squeeze every dime we can get out of our existing budget, as we make a full commitment to engage the community in what they want, people will use it," says Fletcher.The surge in riders helps MTS buck a nationwide trend where public transportation is on the decline.Even in San Diego, year-to-year numbers had been dropping for four straight years, since hitting a record high in 2015 (see chart above).Fletcher says it's a positive step as the city tries to meet strict climate goals that require a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.Recently, SANDAG put out a plan to increase transit ridership to 10%. That sparked a debate over how much money should go towards transit vs. road construction.Fletcher says any money spent on transit also benefits drivers."Every person who chooses transit is one less car driving," he says. "The individual who says, 'I'm always gonna drive,' should support transit because that means less congestion. Less congestion means less toxic pollution and less greenhouse gas emissions. So it's a win for everybody whether you use transit or drive your car."To raise money for more expansion, MTS is looking into a ballot measure for the November 2020 election that would add a half-cent sales tax. 2046

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Recent changes at the border are being felt as President Trump considers a total border shutdown to combat the immigration crisis. Customs and Border Protection officials announced the reduction of the commercial lanes at Otay Mesa from 10 lanes to 8 Tuesday. “4 to 5 hours,” said one driver who added another man in his fleet took more than 6 hours to make it across Wednesday. Companies say drivers are missing deadlines or just skipping the day altogether to avoid the delays. “They lose millions,” said driver Benjamin Alfaro on the already cumbersome process taking even longer, “so if they don’t do that in the normal time of course they lose money. It’s a lot of pressure on everybody.” The President is expected visit the Southwestern border on Friday. 788
