BEIJING, July 6 (Xinhua) -- China's weather forecast authorities said Tuesday that rains are expected to fall on parts of east China starting Thursday, offering some respite to a wide-ranging heat wave that had wreaked havoc across the country over the past few days.From Beijing in the north to Guangzhou in the south, a number of the elderly and children were hospitalized for heat-related illnesses. BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Home prices in 70 large and medium-sized Chinese cities rose by 12.4 percent year on year in May, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said in a statement Thursday.The growth rate was 0.4 percentage points lower than that of April, as property sales in first-tier cities, including, Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, contracted following a string of government measures to rein in price rises.Second-hand homes prices posted a year-on-year increase of 9.2 percent in May, but fell 0.4 percent from April, said the NBS in the statement.New home prices rose 15.1 percent year on year, down 0.3 percentage points from April.In May, floor space sold stood at 67.77 million square meters, a decrease of 12.74 million square meters from April.Floor space sold in the first five months climbed 22.5 percent from a year earlier to 302 million square meters. Growth in the first five months was down 10.3 percentage points compared with the January-April period.

NANCHANG, July 31 (Xinhua) - More cities, counties and townships in China have implemented community correction programs instead of imprisoning not-serious offenders, according to a statement released Friday after a meeting held by the Ministry of Justice in eastern China' s Jiangxi Province.In the first half of 2010, the community correction programs were implemented in four more prefecture-level cities, 84 more counties and city districts, and 2,858 more townships and urban communities, it said.That means the programs are now in 222 prefecture-level cities, 1,420 counties and city districts, and 17,981 townships and urban communities.Further, ten provinces and municipalities, including Beijing and Shanghai, have the programs in all their townships and urban communities.About 486,000 offenders have been committed to community correction programs nationwide, up from 350,000 at the end of 2009.Only 0.2 percent of them committed offences again while they were attending the correction program, the statement said.
